In general, the Artsakh principalities were free and sovereign, so long as the heart of the ruler of one of them was not captured with the sense of treachery. When in 1752 by the connivance of the governor Varanda Melik-Shahnazar II Panah Khan, the head of a tribe of nomadic Sarijallu, was firmed up in Artsakh, he and his son Ibrahim managed to significantly weaken the Armenian principalities. What do these terms reinscribe, and what might attachments to them foreclose to the Armenian, and more broadly, to the collective human experience? Oshagan’s visual vernacular explores Armenian identity, especially as it relates to the subject of indigeneity. Taking his cue from contemporary art – a mix of disparate styles, genres, and media – Oshagan constructs a hybridized model of native Armenian identity, one that is an eclectic mix of peoples, places, and cultures. After surveying recent scholarly discourses in Armenian Studies, I illuminate pathways forward for interdisciplinary approaches to the study of indigeneity, colonization, genocide, removal, dispossession, biocultural assimilation, cultural heritage preservation, and memory work.
