{"title":"CONTACT FREQUENCY UNCERTAINTY IN THE CASE OF COVID-19 IN KENYA: A SYSTEM DYNAMICS CASE STUDY","authors":"Noah Omondi","doi":"10.52202/060557-0075","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.52202/060557-0075","url":null,"abstract":"During pandemics, there are challenges in putting together models, especially when available data is missing or inaccurate. In Kenya, the health ministry is responsible for gathering data on COVID-19 cases. In Kenya's case, the actual number of infected patients may differ from the number of reported cases due to weak surveillance systems and active case detection, slow testing and clinical diagnosis. There's also the additional challenge, in the case of this pandemic, of people who don't show symptoms. System Dynamics is useful in modeling complex non-linear systems, and has been employed before to model pandemics successfully. This paper presents a System Dynamics model for the Covid 19 pandemic in Kenya, describes the model parts, and thereafter investigates the effect of uncertainty in contact frequency using the Vensim System Dynamics modeling approach. The paper includes graphical results of model simulation, and the sensitivity analysis of the study. The knowledge gained from this study, together with the model developed in the study, can play a key role in the control of the pandemic by informing key decision-making to assist the government of Kenya and other countries in the world in controlling the Covid 19 pandemic. The era is characterized by unprecedented volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity in a highly globalised world. There is also a general understanding that sustainability is the paramount paradigm for the Society 5.0 era. Subsequently, and due to increasing concerns about the effects of climate change, the predominant context has been the environmental dimension of the sustainability paradigm. However, in recent times, economic, business, technology and even socio-political aspects have emerged as other dimensions to study and operationalize the sustainability paradigm. This preliminary paper arises from an on-going examination of the technological dimension of the sustainability paradigm. The study focuses on the sustainability of mobile telecommunications systems, especially given the significance of these systems as highlighted by the impacts of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The emergence of COVID-19's economic repercussion on MSMEs is part of a global a crisis that has positioned SMEs under enormous strain to survive, requiring them to effectively adapt to changes in crisis situations. SMEs make a substantial contribution to various economies globally, as evidenced by the fact that they account for a large portion of the countries' GDP while also providing a source of income for millions of individuals. SMEs are the most susceptible during the pandemic because of their limited access to capital, technology among other causes. This study will provide MSMEs' recommendations and remain competitive through resilience by developing inherent operational excellence for continuous improvement in their business process.
