This material demands significant volumes of water for activities in its life cycle other than for concrete mixing. On the other hand, water resources are scarce; the annual local availability is limited, and the demand is growing. A case study is presented where water figures for concrete production activities from literature, were used to calculate the concrete water footprint from cradle to gate by applying a simplified life cycle approach. Then, using the results from the case study, a global concrete water footprint is estimated using annual concrete production figures. The global concrete water footprint was estimated in ~18 billion m3 (6.32-30.43 billion m3). Consequently, study of concrete water footprint is fundamental to establish actions to improve water efficiency.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132589334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To potentiate the crop and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, the morphological and nutritional characterization of tubers of 24 genotypes of potato was carried out. The Gower similarity coefficient was used for the analysis of mixed data (qualitative and quantitative variables). The hierarchical classification analysis made it possible to group the genotypes into four groups with similar characteristics. Group 1 was characterized by short dormancy times and percentages of dry matter less than 20 g/100g, rare forms of tubers, deep eyes and magnesium contents distinguished group 2, group 3 evidenced presence of secondary colorations in tuber flesh and calcium and zinc contents; finally, group 4 identified two genotypes with opposite characteristics. The knowledge of the morphology of the tuber and its nutritional properties contribute to promote the crop, its use and preservation.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132331623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is focused mainly of 37 scientific journals that are in digital format and online platforms. This analysis is quantitative and descriptive, which is of different bibliometric indicators that use extracted data from Googles Scholar such as, citations, number of publications and index in order to create a comparative table of local journals. The work also presents some information about the integration in databases of the magazines, basic elements such as ISSN, use of online platforms identifying the limited scope and visibility of the Panamanian magazines. A comparative analysis of local journals is made with university of Costa Rican magazines, showing how distant our university is in productivity and impact of the publications in constrat our Costa Rican colleague. The results are intended to be a diagnosis of the journals of our universities, as well as to identify the failures to work on improving the visibility, quality, scope, and impact of our journals at national and international level.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133016992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This takes place at a certain melting temperature. Amid the global energy crisis, multiple applications of these materials have been studied at the theoretical, numerical and experimental approach, obtaining promising results in terms of an increase in the efficiency of these systems. However, the application of these materials is being studied since there are no rules or predictions of the feasibility of its application in diverse weather conditions. The tropical climate condition is one of the least studied in this context. In this work, a review of the main findings of recent studies conducted in tropical climate conditions is presented. Additionally, an analysis of the main challenges and opportunities of the application of PCM in the climate of Panama is performed. It was concluded that some applications in passive cooling and solar water heating systems might have the potential for their implementation. However, further studies are required to take into account other applications.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132032571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All participating students had the opportunity to interact via Internet with a mathematics focused STI, to assess the level of their mathematical knowledge and receive personalized tutoring to improve it. This article describes the usage of the STI by a cohort of aspiring students, as well as the most relevant aspects revealed by their interaction with the learning platform. Results suggest that use of the STI may reduce some of the initial differences found within the cohort, and that this effect is strongly correlated with the time spent in the platform, but not with the level of initial knowledge. The significance of this work is twofold: fist, it introduces the use of an STI as a complementary learning tool for second and third level education in Panama, whilst shedding light on the low math levels of students aspiring to enter the university.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122072176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All this has repercussions on the absence of a traceability system that guarantees and certifies the origin of the products originating in this sector. This paper presents a design model that adapts new technologies such as blockchain in the agribusinesses in order to optimize the processes in the supply chain, and specifically improve the traceability of the product. First, the current state of the agricultural supply chain in Panama and the state of the art of blockchain technology are analyzed. Consecutively, the variables that influence the competitiveness of the agricultural sector as well as the basic principles of the blockchain technology are defined and an evaluation about which principles could optimize the competitiveness variables of the agricultural supply chain is made. Finally, a conceptual design model is presented that shows how the blockchain technology could improve processes in the Panamanian agricultural supply chain.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127226165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Para tal efecto, se preparó la aleación líquida en un crisol de carburo de silicio dentro de un horno eléctrico, utilizando cargas de aluminio y silicio de pureza comercial. La composición química de la aleación se controló utilizando un espectrómetro de emisión por chispa. Se utilizaron moldes cilíndricos de acero inoxidable para contener a las muestras de aleaciones líquidas. Una vez que se preparó la aleación líquida y el molde, la muestra líquida se transfirió al molde y los termopares se insertaron en la muestra y en el molde para obtener sus curvas de enfriamiento durante el enfriamiento y la solidificación de la muestra. Las curvas de enfriamiento fueron procesadas numéricamente por el método MEB, basado en balances de energía aplicados al sistema compuesto muestra de aleación liquida / molde. Las curvas de enfriamiento obtenidas para la muestra de aleación bajo estudio también se procesaron numéricamente utilizando dos de los métodos de análisis de curvas de enfriamiento newtonianos más utilizados, con el propósito de comparar sus rendimientos en la determinación del calor latente de solidificación y en la evolución de la fracción sólida. Los resultados obtenidos en este trabajo sugieren que el método MEB presenta un mejor desempeño en la determinación del calor latente de fusión y predice evoluciones de fracción sólida similares a las predichas por los métodos newtonianos convencionales.","PeriodicalId":388062,"journal":{"name":"2019 7th International Engineering, Sciences and Technology Conference (IESTEC)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127226590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
