However, there is limited data on the nature of these injuries. The purpose of this study was to describe and examine changes in the epidemiology of sports-related foot and ankle injuries in female patients using ten-years of national ED data.

Materials and methods

The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a public database representing approximately 100 US EDs, was queried for sports-related foot and ankle injuries sustained by female patients from January 1, 2014-December 31, 2023. Linear regressions and paired t-tests were utilized for data analysis.

Results

There were a total of 40,702 (national estimate (NE) 1,477,488) injuries. The most injured group was adolescents, ages 11–20 years (NE 821,220; 55.7%). The most common diagnoses were strain or sprain (NE 844,165; 57.1%) and fracture (NE 235,840; 16.0%). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant decrease in injury frequency from 2014 to 2023 (P = 0.006; β = −0.795; 95% CI −13436.728, −3127.005).

Conclusion

From 2014 to 2023, there was a significant decrease in sports-related foot and ankle injuries sustained by female patients. Our findings may be utilized to inform and guide injury prevention measures and targeted treatment protocols towards adolescent athletes who remain at increased risk of sustaining sports-related foot and ankle injuries.

Hintergrund
