We investigate how the interference behaves in the outdoor mesh network operating at 60-GHz when blockage and shadowing are present, using probability of collision as a metric, under both protocol model and physical model. In contrast with reported results in mmWave mesh network at 60-GHz advocating that the interference has only a marginal effect, our results show that for a short-range link of 100 m, the collision probability gets considerably large (beyond 0.1) at signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of interest. Compensation or compromise should be made in order to maintain a low probability of collision, either by reducing transmitter node density which is at the cost of network connectivity, or by switching to a compact linear antenna array with more flat-top elements, which places a more stringent requirement in device integration techniques.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116225715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among various massive MIMO beamforming techniques, the fixed-beam scheme has attracted considerable attention due to its simplicity. In this paper, we focus on a fixed- beam based multiuser massive MIMO system where each user is served by a beam allocated to it. As the directions of fixed beams are predetermined and the users are randomly distributed, there could be some ``worst-case'' users, located at the edge of its serving beam, suffering from strong inter-beam interference and thus experiencing low data rate. To improve the individual data rates of the worst-case users while maintaining the sum data rate, an adaptive frequency reuse scheme is proposed. Simulation results corroborate that our proposed adaptive frequency reuse strategy can greatly improve the worst-case users' data rates without sacrificing the sum data rate.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116410953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To overcome the double-near-far effect for the farther device, cooperative communications in the form of relaying via the nearer device is considered for offloading. The access point (AP)'s total transmit power minimization problem is formulated under the constraints of the computation tasks, which is equivalent to a min-max problem and can be optimally solved by a two-phase method. Numerical results not only show the significant performance improvement of the proposed scheme, but also demonstrate its effectiveness in handling computation-intensive latency-critical (CILC) tasks and resisting the double-near-far effect.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"358 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114002271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although security is currently considered a property of the underlying infrastructure, diverse services require protection against different threats and at timescales which are on par with those of service deployment and elastic resource provisioning. We address the resource allocation problem of deploying customised security services over a virtualized, multi-tenant DC. We formulate the problem in Integral Linear Programming (ILP) as an instance of the NP-hard variable size variable cost bin packing problem with the objective of maximising the residual resources after allocation. We propose a modified version of the Best Fit Decreasing algorithm (BFD) to solve the problem in polynomial time and we show that BFD optimises the objective function up to 80% more than other algorithms.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129121033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel analytical framework is proposed to approximate the instantaneous signal-to-interference-plus-noise- ratio (SINR) of an arbitrary user terminal, as well as, the system sum spectral efficiency. Unlike previous studies, our methodology considers spatially correlated Ricean fading, with unequal Ricean K-factors, spatial correlation matrices and link gains across all terminals. Under this fully heterogeneous setting, we demonstrate that the SINR of a terminal can be tightly approximated by a linear combination of non-central chi-squared random variables, where the scaling depends on the individual link gains, K-factors, and eigenvalues of the terminal specific correlation matrices. Our approximations remain tight across the considered spatial correlation models, K-factor models, average uplink signal-to-noise-ratios and number of receive antennas. Leveraging the general form of the SINR and sum spectral efficiency, an analytical method to approximate their statistical moments is presented utilizing the moment generating function. The generality of the aforementioned analytical results is demonstrated via several special cases of practical relevance.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127340692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a hybrid architecture, implemented via a bank of radio-frequency (RF) switches which perform beam selection followed by low-complexity uplink maximum-ratio combining (MRC) at baseband. Considering a Rotman lens antenna array in line- of-sight (LoS) propagation, we derive tight analytical approximations to the average (expected) interference power of an arbitrary terminal, with and without the presence of RF switching. The analytical expressions show that without RF switching, the Rotman lens losses its benefits and collapses to a conventional uniform linear array. Our numerical results demonstrate that the expected interference power to a given terminal decreases significantly with RF switching, due to beam selection separating the uplink direction-of-arrivals (DoAs), in contrast to the case without RF switching, which relaxes the beam selection constraint and thus allows very similar DoAs. Overall, the results in this paper emphasize the necessity of RF switching in order to obtain superior performance with lens arrays, over conventional phased arrays.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124978422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key issues is that the M2M traffic, characterized by small data and massive connection requests, makes significant collisions and congestion during network access via the random access (RA) procedure. To resolve this problem, in this paper, we propose a paging cycle-based protocol to facilitate the random access procedure in LTE- A. The high-level idea of our design is to leverage a UE's paging cycle as a hint to preassign RA preambles so that UEs can avoid preamble collisions at the first place. Our rpHint has two modes: (1) collision-free paging, which completely prevents cross-collision between paged user equipment (UEs) and random access UEs, and (2) collision-avoidance paging, which alleviates cross-collision. Moreover, we formulate a mathematical model to derive the optimal paging ratio that maximizes the expected number of successful UEs. This analysis also allows us to adapt dynamically to the better one between the two modes. We show via extensive simulations that our design increases the number of successful UEs in an RA procedure by more than 3× as compared to the legacy RA scheme of the LTE.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129985387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Latency (i.e., time delay) is considered a key parameter that affects the quality of service (QoS) and the performance of communication systems. This is more pronounced in the IP over Satellite. Metrics such as throughput and bandwidth performance of communication systems are dependent on latency, which also has a direct impact on other QoS metrics, such as Internet packet transfer delay and delay variation (or jitter). The upper limits of QoS objective performance metrics are defined by E2E latency for different QoS traffic classes in this environment. Therefore, there is a need to develop efficient methods for the accurate measurement of E2E latency in a satellite IP environment. Two case study scenarios were developed for satellite heterogeneous networks to measure the latency in a satellite IP network. Two geostationary satellite network services were used to compare the performance of the different scenarios and networks. The results demonstrate that at least 50% of the E2E latency is due to the processing and transmitting of IP packets over the satellite in both scenarios. Inconsistent latency behaviour was also observed from daily results at different times of the day, which may degrade performance of jitter sensitive applications.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"os-33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127867834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intercell interference and high energy consumption in an ultra-dense network are the prime hindering factors in pursuit of these goals. To address the aforementioned challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel user-centric network orchestration solution for Cloud RAN based ultra-dense deployments. In this solution, a cluster (virtual disc) is created around users depending on their service priority. Within the cluster radius, only the best remote radio head (RRH) is activated to serve the user, thereby decreasing interference and saving energy. We follow a stochastic geometry based approach to quantify the area spectral efficiency (ASE) and RRH power consumption models to quantity energy(EE) efficiency of the proposed user-centric Cloud RAN (UCRAN). Through extensive analysis, we observe that the cluster sizes that yield optimal ASE and EE are quite different. Subsequently, we propose a game theoretic self-organizing network (GT-SON) framework that can orchestrate the network between ASE and EE focused operational modes in real-time in response to changes in network conditions and the operator's revenue model, to achieve a Pareto optimal solution. A bargaining game is modeled to investigate the ASE-EE tradeoff through adjustment in the exponential efficiency weightage in the Nash bargaining solution (NBS). Results show that compared to current non user-centric network design, the proposed solution offers the flexibility to operate the network at multiple folds higher ASE or EE along with significant improvement in user experience.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114656218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system (MU-MIMO), we show that the widely used, yet overly simplified, correlation models which generate fixed correlation patterns for all terminals tend to underestimate the system performance. This is in contrast to more sophisticated, yet physically motivated, remote scattering models that generate variations in the correlation structure across multiple terminals. The remote scattering models are parameterized with measured data from a recent 2.53 GHz urban macrocellular channel measurement campaign in Cologne, Germany. Assuming spatially correlated Ricean fading, with maximum-ratio transmission precoding, tight closed-form approximations to the expected (average) SINR, and ergodic sum spectral efficiency are derived. The expressions provide clear insights into the impact of variable correlation patterns on the above performance metrics. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of the MU-MIMO performance to different correlation models, and provide a cautionary tale of its impact.","PeriodicalId":387855,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122380207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
