The need for more or less guaranteed transmission rates (e.g. for bulk-data transfer applications), upper bounds for transmission delay and jitter (e.g. for real time applications like IP telephony, video-conferencing) stimulated the development of QoS transmission technologies like ATM, IP-RSVP and the actual discussion about Diff-Serv mechanisms. This paper describes the implementation and the first measurement trials with the One-Way-Delay measurement components of CM-Toolset. The overall tool architecture consists of a distributed system of load generators and receivers (agents) and a measurement server, which stores the measurement results in a data-base. To measure the exact One-Way-Delay (OWD) the synchronised GPS clock system was integrated. The measurements were realised in a 4 hop heterogeneous IP and ATM network. The clock drift during the loop measurements was about 10 ms, linear and deterministic. So the drift could be eliminated by statistical computations. The measurements were made for UDP flows under different load situations( 1 UDP....5 UDP, TSDU size, interarrival time), and for n*UDP+1 TCP. The measurements show very clearly the interaction and dependencies between the number of flows, their load parameters and the QoS parameters like packet loss and one way delay. The measurements of UDP+TCP multiplexed flows explains, why the concept of flow separation is important for QoS guarantees. CM Toolset can be used by protocol engineers for the development of new QoS-based network technologies by collecting measurement data for modelling the network behaviour. Network managers can tune the operational network to improve the quality e.g. of IP-Telephon.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. This has created demand for efficient and accurate methods of analysis. But the increase in memory sizes used in switches make existing forms of analysis too computationally intensive. Fluid flow models do not include the buffer content in their states and therefore the number of states is buffer independent. This paper critically reviews existing fluid-flow models for shared-memory switches. The advantages of each model are used in developing a model that accurately and efficiently provides cell loss and delay values. The performance of the proposed model is compared with results obtained via simulation and other fluid-flow models. The number of states and the computational time of the fluid-flow models are significantly less than traditional discrete queuing models.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. However, there is no, to our best knowledge, any analytical model reported yet that deals with wormhole-routed direct interconnection networks with non-uniformity in the traffic pattern, such as hot spots. In an effort to fill this gap, this paper describes a novel analytical model of fully adaptive wormhole routing in tori in the presence of hot spot traffic. Results from simulation experiments show close agreement with those predicted by the model.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. Juang, Yuh-Shyan Chen","doi":"10.1109/PCCC.2000.830338","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PCCC.2000.830338","url":null,"abstract":"One major breakthrough on the communication society recently is the extension of networking from wired to wireless networks. This has made possible creating a mobile distributed computing environment and has brought us several new challenges in distributed protocol design. Obviously, wireless networks do have some fundamental differences from wired networks that need to be paid special attention of, such as lower communication bandwidth compared to wired networks, limited electrical power due to battery capacity, and mobility of processes. These new issues make traditional recovery algorithm unsuitable. In order to cope with these problems, the tasks of logging and recovery procedure are performed by the MSSs. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm with O(n/sub r/) message complexity where O(n/sub r/) is the total number of mobile hosts (MHs) related to the failed MH. In addition, these MHs only need to rollback once and can immediately resume its operation without waiting for any coordination message from other MHs. During normal operation, the application message needs O(1) additional information when it transmitted between MHs and mobile support stations (MSSs). Each MSS must keep an n/sub total-h/*n/sub cell-h/ dependency matrix, where O(n/sub total-h/) is the total number of MHs in the system and n,,n h is the total number of MHs in its cell.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. In our BIP approaches, upon receiving a HTTP request, the server actively pushes embedded contents if the permission is given by the client. By means of the pushing mechanism, the HTML web page will be downloaded in one RTT if the embedded contents and the HTML web page are on the same server. The number of requests a web server receives may be reduced significantly and the percentage of HTML documents that may benefit from BIP is quite high. Using trace-driven simulation, this paper presents an evaluation of enhanced BIP approaches that vary in the manner that client cache information is conveyed to the server.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. This paper proposes and evaluates a new approach for improving the throughput of proxy caches by reducing cache miss overheads. An embedded system able to achieve significantly better communications performance than a traditional proxy filters the requests directed to a proxy cache, forwarding the hits to the proxy and processing the misses itself. This system, called a Proxy Accelerator, uses hints of the proxy cache content and may include a main memory cache for the hottest objects. Scalability with the Web proxy cluster size is achieved by using several accelerators. We use analytical models and trace-based simulations to study the benefits and the implementation tradeoffs of this new approach. A single proxy accelerator node in front of a four-node Web proxy improves the cost-performance ratio by about 40%. Implementation choices that do not affect the overall hit ratio are available.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. A Forward-Routing and Backward-Setup process (FRBS) scheme is proposed. FRBS has two stages, a forward routing stage and a backward setup stage. During the forward stage, routing information on all paths from source to destination are forwarded through setup messages to the destination using a controlled flooding approach. Setup messages include CAC information on all links within the traversed path. The destination node collects information on all possible paths in its routing table. The destination then makes a selection of the path with the best cost value, and reservation is attempted along this path backwards towards the source. This represents the backward setup stage, which includes reserving resources along the selected path such that the CAC criteria are met. Various simulation experiments were conducted under different traffic characteristics and network parameters. Results indicate that the FRBS scheme possesses a number of performance advantages in terms of accuracy of routing decisions and call blocking probabilites.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. In order to utilize the saved disk bandwidth by caching, a continuous media server must employ an admission control scheme to decide whether a new client can be admitted for service without violating the requirements of clients already being serviced. Since deterministic admission control is based on the worst case assumption, it causes the wastage of the system resources. In this paper, we propose a statistical admission control scheme for a continuous media servers where caching is used to reduce disk load. This scheme improves disk utilization and allow more streams to be serviced with reasonable computational overhead, while maintaining near-deterministic service. The scheme, called short-sighted prediction admission control (SPAC), combines exact prediction through on-line simulation and statistical estimation using a probabilistic model of future disk load in order to reduce computation overhead.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. An input queued switch with central EDF contention resolution is presented. Static RAM buffers are used in conjunction with fast hardware queues that sort ensembles of equivalent cells. Simulation results show that this approach yields low latency in the presence of bursty traffic, without requiring large queues to prevent cell loss. The results compare favorably to those of an ideal output buffered switch that could not be implemented at a similar link rate and cost.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat. Furthermore, advances in technology and communication have made the realization of a mobile-(nomadic-) computing environment a reality. Superimposing the mobile computing environment onto the multidatabase system allows anywhere anytime access to the information resources. Broadcasting has been suggested as a possible solution for several limitations within this new environment. In this work, and learning from our past experiences in objects' organization on parallel-disk environment, a scheme for object organization along parallel broadcast channels is proposed. The goal of the proposed scheme is to provide load balancing among different channels and to cluster related objects along all channels. The proposed scheme is simulated and analyzed.","PeriodicalId":387201,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Performance, Computing, and Communications Conference (Cat.
