They note that the AIC and its modifications have no consistency property. In this paper we consider asymptotic properties of the AIC and its modification when the number q of groups or explanatory variables and the sample size n are large. First we show that the AIC has a consistency property under a large-(q, n) framework such that q/n → d ∈ [0, 1), under a condition on the noncentrality matrix, but the dimension p is fixed. Next we propose a modification of the AIC (denoted by MAIC) which is an asymptotic unbiased estimator of the risk under the asymptotic framework. It is shown that MAIC has a consistency property under a condition on the noncentrality matrix. Our results are checked numerically by conducting a Mote Carlo simulation. Kato, Narushima and Yabe proposed the SQCQP method whose subproblem is solved inexactly. Their inexact SQCQP method uses a monotone line search strategy. To reduce the number of merit function evaluations and to accept the unit step size easier, we apply the nonmonotone line search to their inexact SQCQP method. We present the algorithms of the inexact SQCQP method with the nonmonotone line searches and prove their global and superlinear convergence properties. This paper extends the two-sample problem in our previous paper to the k-sample problem. Under the assumption that the population covariance matrices are equal, we obtain the likelihood ratio test statistic for testing the hypothesis H0 : μ (1) = μ = · · · = μ against H1 : at least two μs are unequal.
