The tenuissimus muscle was prepared to observe the microcirculation. The mean red blood cell velocity and perfused capillary density at various tissue pO/sub 2/ levels were measured using an intravital video-microscope. Both velocity and density were significantly decreased as tissue pO/sub 2/ was elevated, but the relationship between capillary flow and tissue pO/sub 2/ was not a linear correlation. In addition, the critical pO/sub 2/ value effected on microvascular blood flow regulation may exist in the tissue pO/sub 2/ ranging from 30 to 50 mmHg, which might be detected in the region of arteriolar walls.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127116882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multi-color stimulation which consists of two iso-luminant color stimuli presented with a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) were employed to elicit VEPs, and the first-order binary kernel of the VEPs was calculated using multi-input system analysis technique. The waveforms of the kernels elicited by the two color presentations were similar to those obtained by one color stimulation. This indicated that the simultaneous presentation of two color stimulation is effective in detecting color responses. However, the amplitudes of the kernels obtained by the two color stimulation method were different from those by one color stimulation. This may be because the effect of one color stimulus was weakened by the presence of the other color stimulus.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125189849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many techniques of image processing were proposed to solve problems such as nucleus segmentation and classification. But these studies have mainly focused on epithelial tumors. Nonepithelial skin tumors such as dermatofibroma (DF) and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) have not been enough studied. DF is a benign tumorous disease and DFSP is a mid-grade malignant tumor. Recently, it is necessary that criterion of classification between DF and DFSP is quantitatively specified. In this paper a system for segmenting cell nuclei of DF and DFSP is proposed. Nuclei regions are objectively segmented and surrounded using strength edges by the system. Segmentation of arbitrary shaped nuclear regions and weakly stained nuclear regions is made. A dynamic thresholding method combining the Laplacian histogram with Ohtsu's method is used for segmentation. A segmentation test was done using real tissue cell images of DF and DFSP to evaluate the validity of this system. Shape characteristics such as grade of similarity to a circle were also computed from the segmented regions to assure that some differences between DF and DFSP are expressed in its distribution.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"36 14","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114047850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these methods have limitation in the precise evaluation, because subjectivity of each doctor in charge influenced the clinic results, and there are some problems in terms of reproducibility in diagnosis. It is also difficult to understand how patients are recovering from these evaluation methods. Some approaches have been tried to solve these problems. But they are not widely applied to real diagnosis. The purpose of this paper is to extract contours of facial features and to propose quantitative evaluation of facial palsy. Facial nerve symptoms generally appear in either side of the face. Therefore we used contour of eyes, eyebrows, a lip and wrinkle as features, noting that the symmetry of facial features. Contours of facial features of many subjects were extracted, after subject's faces were taken to digital videotapes. We used four facial expressive motions for diagnosis of some healthy persons and palsy subjects. We defined some indices of evaluation of palsy grade. These indices showed shape of facial features quantitatively. We confirmed from results of observation that the recovery process was quantitatively shown.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121595234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify the neurovascular risk factors for diabetic foot using infrared thermography, compared with other unusual neurological examinations. The subjects were 504 Japanese patients with type II diabetes and 150 normal subjects. Among the diabetic patients 28 had a history of diabetic foot. We preformed the cold stress test using ice-cold water. We observed the time course of the hand temperature and calculated the recovery rate. The hand temperature at rest and recovery rate was significantly lower in the diabetic patients compared with the normal. The patients with diabetic foot had significantly lower temperature and lower recovery rate compared with the patients without diabetic foot. These differences (especially the recovery rate) were the most specific findings in patients with diabetic foot compared with other neurological examinations. The cold stress test using computer-assisted thermography provides much information about the microcirculation of the skin in patients with diabetic foot. It will be helpful to detect high-risk patients.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130033345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trauma and disorders are the major cause of spinal cord injuries at the C1-C level, which have resulted in complete or incomplete loss of sensory and motor functions. More and more accidents occur, which spend a lot of money in surgical treatment and rehabilitation. Conservative therapy or surgical treatment with internal fixation devices has been commonly used to stabilize the spine and enhance spine fusion for minimized compression in spinal cod leading to neurological deficits and other secondary injuries. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of various internal fixation devices for improving rotation stiffness of unstable atlanto-axial joint using a canine model. The results indicated that posterolateral plating provided the optimal stiffness across C1-2 in all the 6 tested directions than did the other 2 techniques although both the latter also had significantly increased stiffness compared to control group (P<0.05). Also, the results supported the use of each tested stabilization techniques for fixing the atlanto-axial instability. For preserving the optimal C1-2 motibility, procedures such as posterior wiring and/or Halifax interlaminar clamping rather than posterolateral plating and screwing should be considered first.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"11 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113957644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systemic circulatory properties reflect the dynamic load to the left ventricle. Obviously, it is of clinical interest to study possible effects of cardiopharmacologic intervention on C and Zo. Therefore, the specific aims of this study are first to delineate the characteristics of the systemic circulation and second to analyze the influence of adrenergic agonists and blockers on C and Zo. We investigate these questions in the chronically instrumented dog by analyzing in particular effects of alpha- and beta-adrenergic drugs. We found that on average Zo amounts to 0.11 mmHg.s/ml, while medetomidine (by a rise of approximately 70%) causes the largest increase in Zo.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116619169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our method features three stages: image acquisition, physiological correlation, and pattern classification. First, we acquire facial thermal imagery using an accurate mid-infrared camera. Then, we transform the raw thermal data to blood flow rate data through thermodynamic modeling. Finally, we classify the subject as deceptive or non-deceptive based on the nearest-neighbor classification method. We perform our analysis on the periorbital area of the subjects' faces. Our previous research has indicated that the periorbital area is the facial area affected the most from blood flow redistribution during anxious states. We present promising experimental results from 18 subjects. We henceforth anticipate that thermal image analysis will play an increasingly important role in polygraph testing. as an additional scoring channel. Our ultimate objective is to increase the accuracy and reliability of polygraph testing through the fusion of traditional invasive 1D physiological measurements with novel non-invasive 2D physiological measurements.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131043728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A microelectrode insertion process to the cell could be improved by pinpoint use of the photosensitizing (PS) effect to degenerate cell membranes prior to insertion. This avoids mechanical perforation of the membrane when the pipette tip makes contact with the cell. Three toxic processes of the cells by BAT can be identified: the first is a non-light-mediated toxicity dependent on BAT exposure time; the second is a phototoxicity independent of BAT exposure time when the BAT concentration is 2 - 10 /spl mu/M range; and the third is a phototoxicity dependent on BAT exposure time with 20 /spl mu/M of BAT concentration in the case that cytotoxicity decreases when /spl alpha/-tocopherol, an anti-oxidant, is added to a cell membrane. This is the typical phototoxicity that the phospholipid peroxidation chain reaction is triggered by a reactive oxygen species generated by a triplet state of BAT.","PeriodicalId":386546,"journal":{"name":"2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125490769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
