Therefore, proteomics is an alternative in the search for biomarkers through extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes related to the immune response. In this sense, this study aimed to analyze the profile of MMPs in healthy and infected Toggenburg goats with chronic SRLV infection in Southeast Brazil. Five positive and five negative goats for SRLV were selected using the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) microtechnique, western blot (WB), and nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR). All animals were submitted to blood collection by puncture of the jugular vein, followed by centrifugation to obtain blood plasma, protein quantification by the Bradford method, one-dimensional electrophoretic separation (1D), and identification of protease activity by zymography and confirmation via reverse zymography in the presence of MMP-2 through the action of tissue inhibitors (TIMP-2). The analysis of protein bands was performed using descriptive statistics and densitometry values for zymography were subjected to the Shapiro-Wilk test to determine normality. Little difference was observed in the occurrence of protein bands between groups. Regarding MMPs, no differences were observed in the expression of proMMP-9, MMP-9, and MMP-2 in animals affected by SRLV. TIMP-2 inhibited proMMP-2 and MMP-2 in all animals. Thus, the profile of protein bands does not change in healthy goats with chronic SRLV infection. The TIMP-2 expression allowed proving the existence of MMP-2 in animals chronically infected by SRLV via reverse zymography.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134973956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood samples were collected from adult females from herds of the Brazilian northeastern region. The first venous blood sample was used for a complete blood examination. The second blood sample was used to detect the presence of anti-C. pseudotuberculosis specific antibodies. The production and management systems of the herds were characterized using questionnaires, divided into three blocks of indicators: Facilities; Characterization of the production system; Health management. Body weight and hematological results were submitted to an analysis of variance, on which the fixed effect was clinical diagnosis, and the principal component analysis was performed to determine the main variables. For CLA, three herds stood out as having the highest rates of seropositivity (85.71, 79.41 and 60.45%). The same herds also had the highest occurrences of CM (9.30, 8.82 and 5.71%). The main variables that showed differences according the diagnosis of both diseases were blood granulocytes and lymphocytes. The study made it possible to observe the relationship between the best sanitary practices and the lowest occurrence rates of both CLA and CM. The diseases present considerable occurrence in sheep populations.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134947110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental exposure can often lead to diseases of the external ear canal in animals. In horses, otitis primarily occurs due to infestation by ectoparasites, promoting local inflammation and infection. Chronic conditions can result in ear deformation, including auricular canal stenosis. While operative techniques for treating auricular stenosis are known, they are limited to companion animals, with few reports on horses. This study aimed to describe the modified lateral resection technique of the ear canal, which is commonly performed in small animals, for treating auricular canal stenosis in six horses. As a methodology, the intertragic notch was used as a reference for the incision due to species disparity. The ear canal cartilage was dissected, followed by resection of the lateral wall and the cartilaginous flap adhered to the skin. Excess skin was removed, and the ear canal was sutured to the skin with nylon thread. Our results indicated a significant improvement in the treatment of otitis in the treated horses, demonstrating a favorable evolution in the healing process and resolution of bacterial infections in all cases. In conclusion, the use of the modified lateral resection technique of the ear canal was successful in all six treated horses, providing access to clinical treatment of the canal without any occurrences of recurrence or postoperative complications.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134975297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microbial diversity of the soils, as well as the presence of resistance genes in the environment directly influence the maintenance of mastitis in the farm. The objective of this work was to analyze the bacterial diversity in pasture soils of a dairy family farm, detecting enterobacteria that may be involved in the etiology of bovine mastitis, and to detect genes that encode broad-spectrum betalactamases in these soils. Twelve soil samples, representative of different areas of the farm located in the municipality of Barra do Piraí, Rio de Janeiro, were collected at different times of the year. Total DNA was extracted from the samples, gene amplified by Nested-PCR and then the amplification products were separated by DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis). With the DGGE it was possible to construct dendograms that effectively represented the bacterial diversity of these soils. Eight of the soil samples were used to amplify the genes encoding the betalactamase enzymes TEM (blaTEM gene), SHV (blaSHV gene) and CTX (blaCTXM gene). In three of the eight soil samples, the blaSHV gene was found to be present. The blaTEM and blaCTX-M genes were not detected in any of the samples. The detection of genes encoding broad-spectrum betalactamases in dairy cattle pasture soils is of concern, because the transfer of gene material between pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria in this environment is a reality.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134974111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A two-year-old male bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with acute onset of lethargy, inappetence and general weakness, increased respiratory effort, dark skin color, and arched back. A gastrointestinal foreign body was suspected, but radiography showed coelomic fluid accumulation. Ultrasound heart examination revealed turbulent blood flow at the level of the atrioventricular valves. Electrocardiography by modified Einthoven lead system (lead configuration 1) as described for Squamata, did not show significant changes. A tentative diagnosis of congestive heart failure as a result of valvulopathy was made. Treatment consisted of parenteral furosemide and fluid administration and assisted feeding with appropriate food intended for adult bearded dragons. The patient was weekly evaluated and successfully recovered over the four months. Echocardiography and electrocardiography were repeated 12 months later. The prescribed treatment was successful with complete resolution of clinical signs, and long-term surveillance of the bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps).","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134975598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The base diets were calculated based on the NRC and provided in the proportion of 80% dry food and 20% wet food. The animals were dewormed, clinically evaluated and adapted to the base diet for 10 days prior to the insertion of me. After fitting, blood was collected for evaluation of haematological and biochemical parameters. The experimental period of each treatment was 14 days, with a new blood collection on the 15th day, with the animals in the fasted state. The blood parameters evaluated were blood count and biochemical tests, composed of urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, total proteins and their fractions, glucose, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and immunoglobulin E. The data obtained were subjected to multiple analysis of variance at the 5% significance level. The results showed that none of the mealworm protein inclusion levels showed blood alterations. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of mealworm meal did not harm the health of the animals tested in experiment, showing that it can be an alternative protein source and can be safely included up to a level of 7.5% in dog foods.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135482031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was divided into two steps: 1) oxygen saturation test; 2) application of ultrafine bubble production technology for the breeding of Nile tilapia. In the first step, the water of a 2.0 m3 test tank was completely deoxygenated and the ultrafine bubble generator was turned on for 60 min. In the second step, the generator was connected to the water recirculating system for breeding of Nile tilapia to compare the overall performance of this system with other under conventional aeration system. The ultrafine bubble generator could reach 100% oxygen saturation in the test tank (27.8 °C) in approximately 21 min and, at the end of 60 min, the concentration was 21.8 mg L-1 (277.52% saturation). The results showed significant difference (p<0.05) between the mean dissolved oxygen concentration in the treatment with ultrafine bubbles (9.80 ± 3.68 mg L-1) and the treatment with conventional aeration (3.47 ± 0.88 mg L-1). No significant difference (p>0.05) was found for the zootechnical performance parameters evaluated. The conclusion was that the ultrafine bubble generator is more efficient to maintain a high dissolved oxygen concentration in the recirculating water in Nile tilapia breeding tanks than the conventional aeration system.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135482038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are released into the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise. In agricultural production, methane (CH4) is considered one of the highest GHG emissions, causing a negative impact on natural resources and accelerating climate change. In the coming years, with the increase in the world population, food production should be implemented in self-sufficient, quality, and sustainable production systems to meet the need for high consumption. The reduction in CH4 production is related to the better efficiency of energy use of the feed by the animals; therefore, the knowledge of the ruminal fermentation parameters, identification of the ruminal microbiota, and selection of more efficient animals, with lower consumption and greater weight gain, in addition to producing less GHGs like CH4, have a less negative impact on the environment and are economically viable. This review presents some aspects of selection for feed efficiency in sheep as a strategy to mitigate GHG emission and some techniques for measuring these gases.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134975294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
