Twenty-five (25) milk samples deriving from a rural property in Bacabeira County, Maranhão State, were assessed. Fat and protein contents, density at 15°C, cryoscopic index, total dry extract (TDE) and defatted dry extract (DDE) were determined based on official analytical techniques and ultrasound spectroscopy, in laboratory environment. Mean protein densities and contents determined through US and OM did not differ from each other (P > 0.05). Mean fat contents and mean values recorded for cryoscopic index, TDE and DDE - determined through US and OM - differed from each other (P = 0.026, P = 0.040, P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively); positive correlations were observed in the analysis of these parameters (R = 0.470, R = 0.118, R = 0.087 and R = 0.315, respectively); methods’ accuracy reached 0.180, 0.058, 0.155 and 0.075, respectively. Ultrasound spectroscopy is a fast technique whose results correlate to those of official analyses. However, it is necessary adopting a specific profile by calibrating the equipment based on information deriving from official analyses. Results in the present study have suggested the need of conducting more comprehensive studies to validate its conclusions.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"51 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139602782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pre-anesthetic medication was performed with dextroketamine and morphine, from which light anesthesia was obtained. Anesthetic induction was performed in gas chamber with isoflurane to reach surgical anesthetic plane. The animal was monitored by evaluation of anesthetic plane, electrocardiogram, pulse oximetry, counting of gular movements and hart rate by vascular Doppler positioned in the sternum. During the entire perioperative period, care was taken to maintain adequate room temperature and skin moistening, in order to preserve organic functions at physiologic standards for the species. Complete anesthetic recovery occurred quickly compared to previously existing literature. The protocol proved to be effective in promoting general anesthesia and safe in terms of stability of evaluated vital signs, becoming an alternative to the use of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) and eugenol. More study is necessary regarding particular anesthetic effects on each species, and, given the lack of information, it is important to consider physiologic characteristics of amphibians in general to minimize the risks.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"52 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139603602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, our goal was to determine whether urine specific gravity (USG) can accurately indicate an elevated uGGT/uCR and, consequently, tubular injury. Twenty-eight animals with VL and five healthy animals (control group) were included in the study. The diseased animals were classified as azotemic (n = 6) and non-azotemic (n = 22). The difference between all groups was tested with the Kruskal-Wallis test for the USG, uGGT/uCR, and urine protein: creatinine ratio (UPC). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value and the accuracy of using USG as an indicator of tubular injury were calculated with the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC curve). The probability of an animal with suboptimal USG presenting tubular injury was obtained by calculating the prevalence ratio. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed differences between groups for all analyzed parameters (p< 0.05). The chosen USG cut-off value, determined by the ROC curve was 1.030, with an accuracy of 78.09%. The probability of a dog with LV and USG below 1.030 having a high uGGT/uCR ratio was 4.95 (p <0.01, 95% CI - 1.32-18.48) when compared to individuals with ideal DU. In conclusion, dogs positive for Leishmania sp. with low USG (<1.030) should have their uGGT/uCR ratio measured to verify the presence of tubular injury even before the onset of azotemia.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"135 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139604597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, identifying a causative agent is difficult in routine clinical practice due to the many pathogens that lead to non-specific clinical signs. Among the various gastrointestinal parasites, protozoa, such as Giardia duodenalis (Lambl, 1859) and Cryptosporidium spp. (Tyzzer, 1907), pose a great threat because of their pathogenicity, prevalence in domestic animals, and zoonotic potential. This study aimed to report the occurrence of intestinal protozoa, G. duodenalis, and Cryptosporidium spp., in cats from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Fecal samples and clinical and epidemiological data were obtained from 60 patients with diarrhea. Samples were subjected to DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the protozoa. Protozoa-positive samples were subjected to DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. PCR assays revealed that one sample (1.67 %) was positive for G. duodenalis, and four samples (6.67 %) contained Cryptosporidium spp. G. duodenalis assemblage B and Cryptosporidium felis (Iseki, 1979) were identified through amplicon DNA sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic analysis. This is the first report of C. felis and G. duodenalis (assemblage B) in cats in Mato Grosso do Sul, central-western Brazil.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"115 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139605595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 339 sheep (Ovis aries) were examined during the period of September 2014 to May of 2015. Procedures for animal examination and age estimation were performed. All animals were divided in three groups: G1, G2 and G3 using the Egerton's modified score system for footrot. Foot lesions were classified as: double sole (DS), overgrowth (OG), white line disease (WLD), moderate interdigital dermatitis (MID), severe interdigital dermatitis (SID), horizontal crack (HC) and other injuries (OI). No significant difference was observed when comparing the same group in different periods, however there was difference between groups in the same period. In dry and moist season, G1 was greater than G2 and G3. The most prevalent lesion per limb observed in dry and moist season was OG. This difference was also observed for DS, OG+WLD, OG+MID, OG+SID, OG+HC and OI. The only lesion that was more prevalent in dry season when compared to moist season was OG+DS. This exploratory study provides key insight into the prevalence of foot lesions of sheep in two distinct seasons, and the occurrence of concomitant lesions. Animals of all ages were classified as moderate to severe footrot according to the modified Egerton scoring system, during moist season.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"119 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139605503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diagnosis and grading of mast cell tumors are based on cytological analysis and histological evaluation, which facilitate appropriate planning for surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment. Surgical resection with safety margins of 2–3 cm is considered the best therapeutic option; however, postoperative complications, such as delayed healing, necrosis, suture dehiscence, and occurrence of seroma, are reported. It is essential to understand the biology of mast cell tumors because prognostic factors directly influence the efficacy of the treatment and the quality of life of the patient. Here, we conducted a retrospective study of dogs submitted to surgical resection of cutaneous mast cell tumors, and analyzed the prognostic factors and occurrence of postoperative complications. The results showed that low grade mast cell tumors were associated with a lower occurrence of ulceration, metastasis, recurrence, lack of need for adjuvant therapy, and occurrence of paraneoplastic syndrome compared to those of a higher grade. We also compared the association between demanding or compromised margins with the presence of postoperative complications. The results showed that high grade mast cell tumors have a greater metastatic potential and that the presence of neoplastic cells in the adjacent tissues leads to a greater malignancy and postoperative complications.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134974121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The urethral diverticulum is the abnormal dilatation of the urethra, and can be of multifactorial origin and related to genetic, endocrinological and environmental factors. The objective of this article is to report on the clinical and surgical treatment of two cases of hypospadias and one case of urethral diverticulum in goats raised as pets, originated from cross breeding polled pairs. In Case 1 the hypospadias was characterized by two orifices on the ventral portion of the penis, separated by a 2 cm interruption of the urethra, and in Case 2 by an orifice on the ventral portion in the region of the urethra. In both cases there was an accumulation of urine in the middle ventral region of the foreskin, leading to distension of the skin. Both cases were successfully treated by urethrostomy and partial penectomy with fixation of the proximal urethral ostium to the skin. In Case 3, the animal was seen at ten days of age with presence of a diverticulum in the preputial region, however, the animal returned for new care only after four months due to urethral obstruction and died as a result of advanced azotemia. Surgical treatment of hypospadia, when performed before the development of azotemia associated with urinary retention, has been shown to be efficient, and post-operative care is important.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134975457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-two (42) adult fish specimens - 21 belonged to species H. unitaeniatus and 21 to species C. Bimaculatum - were captured, euthanized and had their second right gill arch and liver fragments removed for histological analysis. Histological changes in specimens’ gill and liver were semi-quantitatively assessed by calculating the histological alterations index (HAI) based on the severity of each lesion established as stages I, II and III. Results recorded for both species were presented together; they evidenced that both assessed organs have shown changes associated with all three severity stages. Gill changes mostly observed through the analysis comprised total (85.71%) and partial (85.71%) fusion of several lamellae, epithelial lifting (80.95%), congested blood vessels (76.19%), disorganized lamellae, (76.19%) and lamellar epithelial hyperplasia (76.19%) - stage I alterations. The most common liver changes comprised vacuolization (90.48%), melanomacrophage centers (78.57%), cellular contour deformation (66.67%) and nucleus at cell periphery (52.38%), stage I alterations and hyperemia (45.24%) and cytoplasmic degeneration (40.48%) - stage II. Unlike the HAI indices recorded for gills, liver HAI values presented better distributed rates among severity classifications; therefore, it has evidenced a more severe condition. Thus, both organs analyzed in the investigated species have shown several histological changes that may have resulted from specimens interactions with stressors capable of affecting their health.","PeriodicalId":38626,"journal":{"name":"Acta Veterinaria Brasilica","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134947349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prognosis is generally good, except when there is systemic involvement or extensive skin necrosis. This study aims to describe the lesions, diagnosis, and evolution of a young cat presenting with drug eruption following the use of multiple medications for the treatment of systemic conditions. The patient underwent skin biopsy after showing progression of alopecic and localized lesions, which resulted in a suggestive diagnosis of superficial pustular drug eruption. Previous drug treatments were interrupted, but due to the lack of improvement in the lesion pattern, we chose to re-administer chlorambucil at a dose of 2 mg/cat every 48 h for therapeutic purposes.
