As they do not share the same optimism on the self-adjusting capacity of the economy, we first analyze their respective views on laissez-faire but also the place allowed to semi-public bodies and the ‘big company’. We then turn to the role attributed to the State. We obtain a mix of advocacies hardly reconcilable, definitive splits between them but also true points of agreement. This is to be explained by, first, their respective explanation of the Great Depression and, second, their respective views on money and uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"69-96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66611024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He became a prolific writer of economic texts, in which he espoused the ideas of two economists: Major Clifford Douglas’ social credit and national dividend, and Silvio Gesell’s perishable currency. Pound’s economic thought reflects deep philosophical and moral roots. However, it is unfortunate that, of Pound’s economic lessons, the morally most compelling ones are also those less economically sound.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"147-166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66602015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the root of Ortes’ work is the problem of poverty caused by the unbalanced distribution of goods produced in a nation, thus resulting in the suffering of a small or large portion of its population. For this reason, and with inspiration from W. Petty, Ortes proposed Political Geometry to obtain, thanks to set theoretical principles, reliable estimates of the most significant macroeconomic figures. For this purpose, Ortes carried out an exhaustive ten-year study into the Venetian State of the late 1700’s to measure the amount of goods required to ensure the decent subsistence of each of its citizens. By meticulously analysing the productive structure as well as the techniques then in use and with the help of experts in human physiology and other disciplines, Ortes attempted to collect the data needed to construct a system of indicators to establish a socio-economic balance in the Veneto.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"55-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66602028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Looking at the Current Population Survey (2009), the financial crisis has reinforced existing patterns of the us labour force in favour of the dominant identity: white. Using an identity model (Akerlof and Kranton 2010), this paper argues that the decision of principal (employers) to hire an agent (employee) is influenced by the identity to which they belong, and especially to the related social norms attached to their identity. As a result of the financial crisis, in increasing uncertain times, principals have adopted a survival strategy of their dominant identity rather than following the rationale behaviour of hiring the traditional agent i.e., the cheaper and more flexible part of the labour force: the young, female, non-white workforce.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"163-176"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66611080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adherents of the regulationist school fear that convention theory’s ‘soft consensualism’ will cause it to lose its Marxist-Keynesian radicalism, while the conventionalists, on the other hand, seek to persuade the regulationists that they alone hold the microeconomic key to the relative theoretical impasse in which the latter are said to find themselves. It is absolutely essential for heterodox economics to have at its disposal an alternative theory of action with which to counter the homo oeconomicus of neoclassical economics, which underpins the dominant mode of economic theorizing. Such a theory is lacking in both the regulationist and conventionalist schools, and is ultimately the missing piece in the heterodox jigsaw puzzle, without which radical institutionalism is condemned to remain a theoretical archipelago without any real power in the face of the neoclassical continent. We will investigate how, without always fully accepting it, these two schools point towards a common theory of economic action, for which we will attempt to prepare the ground.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"43-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66611006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus in explaining the origins of the crisis is on two features: the experience in the us with financial liberalisation is most telling in terms of the cause of the current crisis. Financial liberalisation enabled an important financial innovation in the shape of the subprime mortgage market. Lessons from the current crisis are discussed along with the economic policies pursued by the us authorities. Potential economic policies after the crisis is over are suggested drawing on the lessons derived from the current experience.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"19 1","pages":"113-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66611032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such example is his account of Frank Ramsey’s contribution to optimal taxation in 1927. For him, and mainly for the public finance economists who rediscovered later Ramsey’s contribution, Ramsey was a genius ahead of his time who used a mathematics too advanced for his contemporaries and was thus rediscovered only in the 1970s, when economists became more mathematically literate. In such rediscovery, a memorandum that Samuelsom wrote in 1951 for the us Treasury became central. I examine Samuelson’s account and challenge it in some respects and explore the historical context of the emergence of the optimal taxation literature in the 1970s. Additional, I analyze the canonization of Ramsey in this field, stressing Samuelson’s role in this process as a professor who liked telling stories about economists, especially about Ramsey, to his graduate students.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"18 1","pages":"121-160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66595912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a reading of almost the entire literature on the transition from the Treatise on Money will show, there is no economist to whom Keynes gave the slightest credit as an influence on the arguments found in the text nor are such influences an important part of the subsequent literature. Yet for all that, Keynes owed major debts to a number of economists from whose works he took significant components without acknowledgment. His taking the words «supply creates its own demand» from the entirely unknown Harlan McCracken set a pattern that can be recognised in his unacknowledged acquisitions from others amongst his contemporaries. The present paper will focus on the works of a number of economists, mostly American, from whom it will be shown that Keynes took a number of concepts that were to feature in the arguments presented in the General Theory.","PeriodicalId":38602,"journal":{"name":"History of Economic Ideas","volume":"18 1","pages":"33-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66595866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
