An emerging consensus points to the critical importance of partnerships in market initiatives addressed to the base of the pyramid (BOP). But despite the calls for cross sector partnerships in BOP initiatives, our collective understanding of how these actually work has not advanced proportionally. This study attempts to address this issue by examining the dynamics at play in nine networks that integrated the BOP with mainstream markets in nine developing nations. The paper is structured in three broad issue-areas: alliance formation (drivers that compelled companies to engage in strategic partnerships); alliance implementation (choice of governance mechanisms, resources for enhancing trust and reciprocity between partners, and conflict-resolution mechanisms); and performance outcome (the extent to which an organization's commitment to an alliance impacted its performance and its societal context).","PeriodicalId":385942,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Social Enterprise (Topic)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128991316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Reaching Rural Areas with Financial Services: Lessons from Financial Cooperatives in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Sri Lanka","authors":"Ajai Nair, Renate Kloeppinger-Todd","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.990790","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.990790","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents four cases of financial cooperative networks in developing countries with significant rural outreach. The four cases are SICREDI (Sistema de Cooperativa de Credito) in Brazil, SANASA in Sri Lanka, RCPB (Reseau des Caisses Populaires du Burkina) in Burkina Faso, and KERUSSU (Kenya Rural Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Union) in Kenya. These cases represent examples of FC networks with significant outreach in rural areas, but operating in widely varying economic contexts. Access to financial services contributes to rural development and poverty reduction by promoting income-enhancing and vulnerability-reducing investments, enabling better management of cash flows and risk, and facilitating remittances. However, financial access is limited in most rural areas in developing countries because of high transaction costs and risks attributed to low levels of economic activity, poor infrastructure, high levels of production and price risks in agriculture, and poor public policies, such as interest-rate caps and debt write-offs. Through a case study approach, this paper attempts to answer such questions as: Can FCs provide financial services in rural areas in developing countries and still be profitable? Do FCs provide services to low-income clients? How does the regulatory environment affect FC performance? How does the business model of FC networks affect FC performance?","PeriodicalId":385942,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Social Enterprise (Topic)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117147696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, as a case study, Work and Social Affairs Organization in Iran has been chosen. This organization is in charge of promoting and paving the way for entrepreneurship in Iran. Based on the size of the organization, a sample of 15 employees in this organization in its Fars Province branch has been chosen. They answered to the questionnaires which had the list of barriers. Since they are familiar with the barriers to intrapreneurship in the atmosphere of Iran, the frequency of their answers (stated barriers) were shown in a final bar chart. Based on this study the tension between the values of the intrapreneur and its organization, is the principal barrier to intrapreneuship in Iran.","PeriodicalId":385942,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Social Enterprise (Topic)","volume":"642 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126210906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
