So called microelectrode arrays allow for electrical recordings as well as for electrical stimulations at many parallel sites. Their design and substrate may vary strongly with the field of application. For in vivo implants often flexible substrates are favoured causing low mechanical stress in the tissue. For the first time this type of flexible microelectrode array (MEA) chip shall be combined with the relatively new approach of nanostructured electrodes. Nanostructures help here to increase the electrode's surface and decrease its impedance resulting in a good the signal to noise ratio. This paper describes the fabrication process of Gold nanopillar microelectrode arrays (MEA) on low temperature curing polyimide for the interface with electrogenic cells. The low temperature curing polyimide is characterized and discussed in terms of electrical and mechanical properties. It is shown that using the proposed methods vertically aligned gold nanopillars can easily be integrated into a micro system on a flexible substrate. We found that electrical and mechanical properties of the polyimide layer strongly depend on its thickness.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131676104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, common and innovative images are extracted from the source images. Secondly, sparse PCA method is employed to fuse the information of innovative features. Then weighted average fusion is used to fuse the sparse PCA result with the common feature thereby preserving the edge information and high spatial resolution. We demonstrate this methodology on medical images from different sources and the experimental results proves the robustness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131865714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this technique, a pattern of spatially varying magnetism is applied at the end diastole. Analyzing the deformation of tag pattern during the cardiac cycle has wide applications for cardiac deformation analysis. Noninvasive myocardial tagging in MRI has shown great potential in measuring and studying the motion of the heart. This paper presents a mathematical model that simulates the real cardiac motion during myocardial tagging. We synthesized both the Spatial Modulation of Magnetization (SPAMM) and complementary Spatial Modulation of Magnetization (CSPAMM) tag patterns with arbitrary spatial frequency. Using this model, we tested the performance and limitations of different Optical Flow (OF) motion tracking techniques and compared them with the performance of Harmonic Phase (HARP) analysis technique. The results exhibit that the OF tracking accuracy differs from point to another with a noticeable over estimation at the end of systole. Also OF is performing better than HARP at the heart borders.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115635232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pulse width modulation output of an Arduino microcontroller controls the speed of a DC motor that simulates a Treadmill machine. The control adjusts the duty cycle of the pulses coming out of the Pulse width modulation (PWM) output of the controller. If the heart rate of the patient running on the machine is lower than a set value recommended by a cardiologist, then the PWM signal increases the speed of the motor to make the patient run faster. If the heart rate of the patient running on the machine is higher than the value set by the cardiologist, then speed of the motor is reduced by the controller. The system was designed and implemented using locally purchased components, which shows that local manufacturing of devices is possible and investors can invest in local companies.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117259041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal way to obtain an accurate insomnia diagnosis is through polysomnographic (PSG) measurements and face-to-face patients' consultations. Though a number of commercial wearable PSG systems are now available for patients to use in the comfort of their homes they do not incorporate daily subjective reporting essential for effective insomnia diagnosis and treatment. The subjective data are necessary to explore the patient's day-to-day sleep hygiene, as part of the clinician's diagnosis of insomnia. Sleep diaries, in which the patient records information about their sleep patterns, have the ability to allow practical, economical and detailed assessment of insomnia conditions, paving the way for a successful treatment. Smartphones offers a great opportunity to exploit mobile technology to implement electronic versions of these sleep dairies. A mobile application for insomnia treatment needs to meet specific requirements of interface, question relevance and transferring of data. However, existing Android solutions do not meet these three criteria. In this paper, we propose a new sleep diary solution for insomnia assessment and diagnosis. Our application has the advantage of being easy to use, simple and secure. It allows the transfer of recorded data to the clinician, thereby reducing the number of daily visits.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123399684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm proposed is based on the anisotropic diffusion equation of Perona and Malik (PM), and introduces a new implementation to determine the scale space parameter of the diffusion function in an adaptive manner and to ensure the convergence process. The adaptation is done according to the local intensity variance which was computed for each image pixel. The proposed method is evaluated and verified on the basis of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Edge Preservation Factor (EPF), Structure Similarity Index Map (SSIM), Universal Quality Index (UQI) and Feature Similarity Index (FSIM). The experimental data demonstrate that the proposed method can reduce the speckle noise effectively without blurring the edges.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123995229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With special features such as square base and pyramid tip, our proposed microneedle may have better mechanical strength compared with that of previously proposed microneedles. We also provide mathematical frameworks for analyzing both mechanical strength and fluidic transport efficiency of microneedles. To evaluate the performance of our microneedle compared with that of previously proposed microneedles we conduct intensive calculations with various parameter settings. According to calculation results, our proposed microneedle may be optimal for blood collection. Moreover, our proposed microneedle provides continuous blood collection with higher volumes because of its optimal hollow width with recommended applied pressure.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126282252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This becomes essential, when the RX coil is part of a medical implant and dramatically limited in size. The parameters, which completely describe a coil, are its inductance and ohmic losses. Both values are just dependent on a few geometrical and material parameters, i.e. filling factor, diameter of the wire, outer radius, inner radius and length of the coil, as well as the length and the initial permeability of the utilized ferrite rod. This study shows that, the two latter parameters have both to be maximal to reach the highest efficiency of the system. The effect of the remaining parameters on the system efficiency in a predefined parameter's range can be summarized as follows: optimal points for the inner and outer radius as well as for the length of the coil have been found, while for the filling factor an analytical expression has been found to show that it has to be maximized to get the best efficiency. Finally, the wire diameter that was found to be the most critical parameter can be optimized for a given set of parameters by calculating an optimal value for the ohmic losses of the RX coil.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122441993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is motivated to optimize the design of an Total Artificial Lung (TAL) under clinical trials. Effects of three non-dimensional parameters: Reynolds number, non-dimensional amplitude of free stream velocity and Keulegan Carpenter number on oxygen transport and total drag (resistance) of both the fibers are studied. Range of parameters investigated corresponds to operating range of TAL. For most of the cases investigated, results show enhanced oxygen transport for square fiber but higher resistance when compare with the circular fiber case under almost all flow conditions. For both fibers, oxygen transfer rate are enhanced at higher Reynolds number, higher velocity amplitude and lower KC values. Overall drag is found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number and decreasing amplitude and is not significantly effected by Keulegan Carpenter number.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121779112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
