An anchoring between past and present is essential for any nation concerned with preserving this rich heritage, and protecting it from deperdition. A new conceptualization of the preservation of Tunisian cultural heritage in a post-crisis context integrates the role of the state as well as the private sector/NGOs and international institutions to conserve and subsequently promote this heritage. This approach tends to revive certain components of cultural heritage and to revitalize the economic sphere that revolves around it. This research focuses on the integration of digitalization and innovative techniques in order to preserve or even promote Tunisia’s cultural heritage. Qualitative research, through the combination of in-depth interviews and focus groups, was carried out with the governmental sector, private/NGOs, and foreign institutions whose aim is to promote this heritage. The combination of the results of these sectors tends to provide a pragmatic picture of the current post-crisis situation in addition to important managerial contributions. An analysis of the qualitative corpus via T-LAB Plus 2022 made it possible to identify the technologies most mentioned by the respondents.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"739 1","pages":"17 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82198403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is done by detailing and critically reflecting on the process of developing a multimedia tour and podcast episode based on the author’s original published research that investigated the role of music and social dancing during Newport’s emergence as a world-class resort in the Nineteenth Century. The multimedia tour featured in this case study makes use of digital location-based web and mobile application technologies to deliver a text and image-driven narrative with sonic enhancements augmenting the history. The podcast episode features place-based audio storytelling techniques which also enrich the understanding and potential reach of the subject. The multimedia tour and podcast episode in conjunction with the author’s original published research all work collectively to preserve Newport’s summer culture history. Some lessons learned include recognizing the advantages of utilizing established platforms, collaborating with experts, and embracing system constraints to optimize narrative focus.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"6 1","pages":"31 - 46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84776064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It lays out the challenges facing digital media arts, articulates the significance of the deposit of local media art organisation archives into the custody of major, jurisdictionally-appropriate cultural institutions, and details the selection of case studies for research from these organisations’ archives and other existing digital media art collections in our partner organisations’ custody. Case studies consist of the ANAT archive (formerly the Australian Network for Art and Technology), floppy disks from the Stan Ostoja-Kotkowski archive, Experimenta Media Art’s exhibition “Virtualities” (1995), dLux media art’s exhibition “Matinaze 97” (1997), and the Griffith University Art Museum’s collection of interactive CD-ROMs. The article reports on progress to date against two of the project’s aims, outlines the collective benefits to partners and to researchers of artworks and other materials from these archives being available, and indicates that access to born digital materials should improve in the near future with digital emulation infrastructure set to be built.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"19 1","pages":"155 - 166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75048939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fans of nonfiction now stream multi-episode documentaries on platforms like Netflix or catch a feature at one of many documentary-centered film festivals around the world. Inexpensive video cameras and internet distribution have expanded the documentary film universe exponentially. From 1-min films to feature-length theater releases, moviegoers around the world have embraced this diverse and growing genre. To the benefit of aspiring filmmakers, documentaries can now be filmed on a wide array of digital video devices, including smartphones, and edited inexpensively. Given this abundance, it may seem counterintuitive that, from a preservation perspective, the documentary film genre faces substantial risks. Research indicates that independent filmmakers lack access to resources that would ensure the long-term stewardship of their works (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 2012). This research project examines documentary film production through the lens of digital curation. It describes filmmakers’ data practices and proposes a data curation model designed to guide filmmakers and film archives in developing data management plans similar to those currently used by researchers in the sciences. The proposed data curation model reflects the influence of the growing research data management field and integrates components related to digital storage, copyright, publishing, context, and file organization.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"36 1","pages":"141 - 154"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87273521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These questions are addressed through a qualitative content analysis of N = 136 participant responses from 2013 to 2022 to a question about their personal experience of data loss. The study finds that there is no decline over time in participant’s experience of data loss, and the reasons for data loss continue to be varied. Losing digital information endures as an unpleasant experience for today’s computing users, and personal digital archiving ought to be introduced to young people early on to avoid learning about data loss “the hard way.”","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"17 1","pages":"133 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82525657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, studies related to sustainability in library preservation and conservation, especially in academic libraries, are still limited. This study aims to determine current practices of sustainable library preservation and conservation in academic libraries. The findings of this study will serve as a starting point to obtaining a comprehensive understanding of how academic libraries are implementing climate change–responsible preservation and conservation programs. This study applies quantitative and descriptive approaches to collect data. A questionnaire was distributed to the top 200 universities in the Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Rankings 2021. The results show that current practices of sustainable library preservation and conservation implemented at the majority of academic libraries relate to sustainable energy use. Although some areas still need to be developed (e.g., policy and regulation toward sustainable library preservation and conservation practices, alternative eco-friendly preservation and conservation materials, and waste management practices), the fact that academic libraries have implemented sustainable practices in preservation and conservation is noted as a positive finding, since it represents success in universities’ efforts to address the climate change issue.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"42 1","pages":"121 - 129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72830032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study compares the features of three SMDAS: ArchiveSocial, Pagefreezer, and Smarsh. First, by surveying the developers’ websites and catalogs, the features of all three software products are identified and classified into four areas. After using statistical methods and the Chi-square test, significant differences among features of the software in each domain are investigated. “Access to deleted records,” “automatic archiving,” “archiving of native formats,” “archive categorization,” “archive sharing,” “simple and advanced search,” “online service,” and “advanced discovery and monitoring functions” were the shared features. A significant difference was noted in the domain of security and data preservation, with Pagefreezer software offering more features than the other two software. In the other areas, no significant difference was observed. Knowledge of SMDAS can help librarians and other information professionals choose and use it wisely. Comparing features may also benefit companies that are developing SMDAS. The literature suggests to use the studied software; nevertheless, few studies discussed the software’s features in detail. This article has made a valuable contribution to comparing the software’s features.","PeriodicalId":38353,"journal":{"name":"Preservation, Digital Technology and Culture","volume":"25 1","pages":"111 - 119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84216617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
