This issue is one of the most critical steps in establishing the factory since the results of this decision will have economically, socially, environmentally and technologically significant effects in the long-run. Selecting the most appropriate provinces for establishing new manufacturing units of wooden furniture in Iran is the purpose of this study. Effective indicators in the location of the furniture industry were identified and a hierarchy was constructed based on five major groups of criteria. The weight of the indicators was then established by analytical hierarchy process. The amounts of the indicators with regard to alternatives were obtained from factories in public and private sectors. These weights were employed in TOPSIS to rank the alternatives. Finally, the potential provinces were identified according to the priorities obtained by this technique. What is more, globalisation has increased competition and academia is now called upon to operate in an international environment facing other well established and prestigious institutions. It is in this context that Web 2 technologies widely available today offer a framework that allow academic institutions to increase their extraversion and reach a wider public; wikis, forums and e-learning platforms to name a few of these technologies. This paper attempts to offer a convincing answer to the ability of the Greek universities, operating in an unfavourable environment with many obstacles, to exploit what Web 2 has to offer; to also assess their readiness to integrate the new technologies and face the competition directly. The methodology of conceptual characterisation by embedded conditioning (CCEC), is a proposal for building conceptual interpretations of hierarchical clustering that contributes to enshort the gap between the clustering itself and the further decision-making processes. The methodology uses some statistical tools (as the boxplot multiple, introduced by Tukey) together with some machine learning methods, to learn the structure of the data; and find the characterising variables (previously introduced by Gibert) of the classes when they exist, whereas providing alternatives when they do not exist. In this paper, the pillars of the methodology are presented, as well as different criteria for knowledge integration. The usefulness of CCEC for building domain theories as models supporting later decision-making is addressed. An integration of tools from different disciplines could systematically help in the construction of an agreed framework for problem structuring, above all when the situation is 'new'. An application was developed in relation to an industrial project, in order to reduce uncertainty on the market that has to accept the innovation. The knowledge elements that were acquired in the project were analysed with an integrated use of cognitive mapping and actor network representation, in order to understand the whole situation and structure the problem. The results of this action were used to identify and formally develop technological, organisational and economic constraints and criteria starting from the end users' vision on the acceptability of all the possible innovations. Although data and models that provide information on this subject exist, their knowledge may be fragmentary and difficult to interpret. We present a user-friendly modelling tool that integrates results of different models and data-analyses. It can be used by decision-makers for assessing the probabilities of different nutrient abatement scenarios for achieving specific targets set by the Water Framework Directive for Finnish coastal waters in the Gulf of Finland. The results suggest that significant reductions in nutrient loads are required to achieve good ecological status in Finnish coastal waters, and in the event of increased precipitation these targets may be less likely to be attained.
