Edge users are typically the victims because of high interference exposure. To counter this high interference, picocells communicate with the edge users in protected subframes (PSF). The severity of the problem intensifies in case of hotspot deployment, where picocells cannot provide coverage to the entire hotspot, thus forming a dense ring of macrocell users around picocells. We argue that these macrocell users are also victims, constituting a significant victim user population in hotspot deployment. We propose that, along with the macrocell muting during PSF, picocells should also be operated in cooperative manner with macrocell, and be barred from transmission during some of the subframes for protection of these macrocell victim users. We define a utility function to find the optimal values of PSF density for both macrocell and picocells, which would increase victim user throughput thereby enhancing system fairness. Exhaustive simulations illustrate that the proposed scheme improves victim user throughput significantly, while maintaining the overall system capacity.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134624709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transmission policies in these systems need to adapt to the harvested energy availability. In this work, we investigate the interaction between relaying, energy harvesting, and stability. We introduce the problem of general relaying cost minimization for cooperative energy harvesting networks. We consider a simple network in which a source transmits to a destination through network-level cooperation with a number of relay nodes. The source and the relays have energy harvesting capability. To adapt the relaying process to the available harvested energy, we exploit partial relay cooperation in which the flows through the relays are controlled. The relaying cost minimization problem is feasible when the data queues of the source and the relays are stable. The stability conditions of the data queues are derived. Then, we introduce the energy consumption as a cost criterion for the optimization problem to find an energy-efficient partial relaying protocol. We assess the effect of partial relay cooperation compared to the cases of no cooperation and full relay cooperation.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134257376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Input for evaluation of localization and time-synchronization derived from experiments is not readily available. Using real-world experiments we evaluate the performance of our cooperative combined localization and time-synchronization approach called aLS-Coop-Loc and a non-cooperative approach. We perform experiments using the SeaSTAR Proteus node and a Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) node from Kongsberg Maritime at a lake and at Strindfjorden in Norway. These experiments provide realistic insight into ranging performance in real-world environments. Evaluation shows that the cooperative approach outperforms non-cooperative approaches in terms of accuracy of localization and time-synchronization. aLS-Coop-Loc provides about about 2% to 34% better position accuracy and 50% improved time-synchronization.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126508656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides the list of locations where to put new nodes to patch the coverage holes and mend the disconnected components. In order to do this we first consider the simplicial complex representation of the network, then the algorithm adds supplementary nodes in excessive number, and afterwards runs a reduction algorithm in order to reach a unimprovable result. One of the novelty of this work resides in the proposed method for the addition of nodes. We use a determinantal point process: the Ginibre point process which has inherent repulsion between vertices, which simulation is new in wireless networks application. We compare both the determinantal point process addition method with other vertices addition methods, and the whole disaster recovery algorithm to the greedy algorithm for the set cover problem.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133553166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we address the problem of assessing the generic cost of a WMN and comparing it with the cost of other supported network solutions, e.g. a cellular network. We restrict our analysis to regular topologies and make simplifying assumptions about the cost breakdown, without introducing however any bias in favour of multi-hop solutions. For any choice of the parameters, our model determines the feasible network design solutions, that satisfy the traffic demands of all Mesh Nodes thanks to optimal scheduling, and the solution having the minimum cost among all these ones. Our cost analysis takes in account the problem of interference and implies an efficient use of the available resources through spatial reuse.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133525865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies on power control tend to focus on one aspect of the control, either its effect on transmission capacity (PHY layer) assuming simultaneous transmissions, or its effect on contention order (MAC layer) by maximizing spatial reuse. We observe that power control has a dual effect: it affects both spatial reuse and capacity of active transmission; moreover, maximizing the two separately is not always aligned in maximizing system throughput and can even point in opposite directions. In this paper we introduce an optimization formulation that takes into account this dual effect, by measuring the impact of transmit power on system performance from both PHY and MAC layers. We show that such an optimization problem is intractable and develop an analytical framework to construct simple yet efficient solutions. Through numerical results, we observe clear benefits of this dual-effect model compared to solutions by trying to maximize spatial reuse and transmission capacity separately. This problem does not invoke cross-layer design, as the only degree of freedom in design resides with transmission power. It however highlights the complexity in tuning certain design parameters, as the change may manifest itself differently at different layers which may be at odds.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132893530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although exception handling, such as uncontrolled handover and connection re-establishment, is supported in a 4G wireless network system, it still results in a lengthy yet acceptable handover duration. Notably, the results from commercial 4G cellular systems show that the preparation phase period accounting for 19% of the controlled handover duration is long and prone to uncompleted handover. In this work, we propose a Context Prefetching handover Scheme (CoPS) for 4G broadband wireless access networks in order to effectively reduce the lengthy preparation phase period in the controlled handover procedure without any modifications on user side. We also propose two triggering mechanisms according to the mobility scenario for a trade-off between the overhead and the benefit of prefetching. We implement CoPS and the triggering mechanisms on a WiMAX small-cell network platform of outdoor small cell base-stations. Our field trial results show significant improvements of CoPS in a reduction of the preparation phase period by 78% as well as a reduction of handover duration by 17% and in negligible resource occupation overhead. The proposed solutions also can be introduced into existing LTE infrastructures.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115413451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In interest of studying the fundamental limits imposed by physics on communication systems in general, we model a simple generic system that enables us to make some basic inquiries about the energy efficiency in information transfer and processing. We use ideas from thermodynamics such as Szilard engine to represent information bits. We further use ideas from electromagnetic theory for transfer of information, and information theory to define the energy efficiency metric. We find the upper limit of this efficiency and conditions at which it can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124140214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning techniques exploit repetitive patterns in human behavior to predict some future transmission contexts of the network. In this paper, we target to improve the energy efficiency of delay-tolerant transmissions by enabling flexibility in resource allocation with prediction-based strategies. We study the performance, in terms of energy efficiency of several scenarios of future knowledge ranging from zero to perfect knowledge of the future context, but also partial knowledge scenarios (short-term predictions, long-term statistics or partial knowledge). An iterative process, approaching the optimal strategies in each scenario, is described. In some cases, closed-form expressions of the optimal strategies to be implemented can be obtained and the performance in each scenario is computed. Our analytical and numerical results assess the potential benefit of exploiting the knowledge of the future in the case of a delay-tolerant transmission and show how the system may benefit from a provided piece of information about the future transmission context.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122400638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study the energy efficiency of relay-assisted cellular networks using tools from stochastic geometry. We first derive the coverage probability for the macro base station (MBS) to user (UE), the MBS to relay station (RS), and the RS to UE links, and then we model the power consumption of MBSs and RSs. Based on the analytical model and expressions, the energy efficiency of relay-assisted cellular networks is then evaluated and is shown to be strictly quasi-concave on the transmit power for the MBS to UE link or the RS to UE link. Numerical results also show that the energy efficiency first improves while it hits a ceiling as the MBS density increases.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122627507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
