In each of the episodes in question—Lévi-Strauss’s analysis of Oedipus and Griaule’s of Ogotommêli’s performance of Dogon cosmology—the anthropologists’ attempts to apply a definition of myth in new contexts are later determined to be ill fitting (after certain antimonies arise), and the counterpart concept reveals itself to be at work. One of the important consequences of this perspective is that it reveals how little mastery we have over our concepts, that we live with concepts that are in the world and that address themselves to us in any number of ways. Another is that the boundary between concepts like myth and literature, if drawn very sharply, is of extremely restricted anthropological use. The extension of concepts to new contexts through examples also transforms the concept (it doesn’t merely illustrate it).","PeriodicalId":381168,"journal":{"name":"Living with Concepts","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116068661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By drawing on ethnographic details as well as literary texts, it asks what it would mean, and why it is important, for anthropology to give a realistic account of the lives of others. The figure (concept) of the zombie is interesting because it deeply challenges us, and thus requires a re-examination of the relation between thought and reality. The questions about what it is to describe a form of life, and how we are to do such a thing with tact, are the driving force of this essay.","PeriodicalId":381168,"journal":{"name":"Living with Concepts","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133359833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They enrich it, make things count, and open up new dimensions of experience. Thus, they are a condition of our capacity to bear reality, even if the latter sometimes puts them to the test.
