We argue that conceptualization understood in terms of its intimate connection to life emerges in experiential responsiveness to the demands that life puts to the living. Thus, life makes a conversation of us.","PeriodicalId":381168,"journal":{"name":"Living with Concepts","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117021440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inquiry is based on ethnographic fieldwork among clinical staff in a torture rehabilitation clinic in Denmark and zooms in on the tangible as well as subtle ways in which their work with victims of torture comes to mark the sociality of the clinic. Ultimately, the chapter asks what it means to know the pain of, in, another body when that form of pain is born out of violence and what this means for the human form of life.","PeriodicalId":381168,"journal":{"name":"Living with Concepts","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115656529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper draws from the author’s mistakes in attempting to resolve a conflict over sorcery accusations among a group of siblings in Mayotte (Western Indian Ocean) in order to illuminate ethical dimensions of living with sorcery and also of studying it. The chapter presents a picture of some of the vulnerabilities and insights that life with sorcery can offer and distinguish the concept in the life of inhabitants of Mayotte from the concept in the life of anthropologists (the language game of anthropology). The distinction is not equivalent to emic and etic or token to type.","PeriodicalId":381168,"journal":{"name":"Living with Concepts","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126440177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
