In this special edition, the future of communications and PR in and beyond the context of the Covid-19 pandemic is being (re)imagined by scholars addressing the topic from theoretical, practical and educational perspectives. Following Thomas Kuhn’s insight that paradigm shifts are often triggered by – epistemological and practical – crises, this special edition invites and encourages the exploration of alternatives to established ways of thinking, the challenging of established mindsets. In doing so, this edition addresses the future of public relations and communications from multiple perspectives: paradigmatic (metamodernism) and theoretical (astroturfing), organizational (newsrooms), competences vs capabilities and educational (the heritage and challenges of neoliberalism) while also revisiting current premises including PR’s role in deliberative democracies. In a time of seemingly growing polarization of perspectives, we need to get beyond dichotomies and toward integration and synthesis. However, a systematic understanding of the design recommendations in Senior Online Communities is still lacking in scientific documentation. The aim of this paper is to identify the design recommendations used in online communities that support active aging. In addition, this paper highlights some of the benefits of using online communities by older adults. Twenty-three papers published between January 2015 and May 2020 in English-language, peer-reviewed publications, met inclusion criteria. The review presents a set of recommendations for designing online communities to enhance older adults’ social interactions. A process that aims for “engagement” is suggested to strategically guide the design of Senior Online Communities: Interacting – Sense of Belonging (Role-playing, Storytelling, and Legacy) – Engaging. Their context and their surroundings make them prone to an everyday and effective use of nwe technologies, but not necessarily reflective, mature and appropriate. This article presents an analysis on the crossing of competences related to Transmedia Communication and those that have to do with Critical Thinking. Its fusion is what we have called Transmedial Thinking. To this aim, a case study has been taken as a reference, the Guidance Project by the Pompeu Fabra University, in Barcelona. Through it, a series of university and secondary school students develop Transmedia and Critical Thinking skills that enable their personal and social empowerment.
