The primary goal of a green road is to reduce environmental and social problems and enhance economic prosperity in the surrounding area as a result of the road construction. To achieve these ends, sustainable road rating systems have been developed in a number of countries that integrate sustainable practices into their specific local context. The objective of this research was thus to develop a green road rating system for South Korea. A green road rating system framework was developed based on existing green road rating systems that includes suitable categories, indicators, and credits, and applies appropriate weightings to each. A green road rating system manual was created to provide a comprehensive guide for the design and construction of green roads that can also be used as an education manual for construction professionals...","PeriodicalId":38108,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2093761X.2015.1117404","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60075932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In tropical climates, especially near the equator, the levels of solar radiation and conditions of sky appearance represent the main limitation in this region. In Malaysia, the application of skylight systems to single-storey buildings is limited because of environmental constraints that discourage its adoption. Understanding the allowable level of daylight in an indoor environment is crucial. Many standards, guidelines, and studies have provided various levels, but the desired level is still under debate. Therefore, this research aims to review and evaluate the allowable useful illuminance of daylight in the indoor environment from a skylight in single-storey buildings (used for office work) under Malaysian sky conditions. This study provides a comprehensive review of previous research on understanding daylight illuminance and Malaysian sky conditions. Surface condensation simulation evaluations using only conventional computer-aided design (CAD) drawings may be inaccurate due to the problems of interference from the analyst’s subjective judgement and missing information, and this process takes a long time due to repetitive evaluations brought about by design changes. In order to improve on these problems, a unified evaluation method using BIM data can be used, and this requires an information system which enables data compatibility between BIM data and the input data of a heat transfer analysis program. This study firstly presents a data compatibility methodology between BIM authoring tools and heat transfer programs by establishing the surface condensation simulation analysis process using BIM ...","PeriodicalId":38108,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2093761X.2015.1072590","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60075072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study is to introduce an approach for evaluating energy-efficient housing retrofit alternatives, using data from a real case. A detailed life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of possible retrofitting strategies is performed for the case of a house built in the 1960s in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. Based on this case study, an approach is developed to illustrate the impact trend of retrofitting costs on energy consumption savings. By defining three separate cost evaluation zones, comprising of a cost effective zone, an energy efficient zone, and an improvement needed zone, the results of this study can potentially be used not only in decision-making for retrofitting, but also in the evaluation of projects related to energy retrofits. Then, using the proposed methodology for the case study, a normalised model is developed to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting effo...","PeriodicalId":38108,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2093761X.2015.1074948","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60075326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fair amount of carbon footprint known as embodied carbon footprint is released during their extraction to ultimate utilisation in construction activities. However, quantification and evaluation of the embodied carbon footprint from structural materials of various grades was lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the variation in embodied carbon footprint potential when various classes/grades of concrete and steel in six different combinations were adopted during the design and planning phase using life-cycle analysis (LCA). Building information modelling (BIM) was utilised to virtually construct a two-storey conventional office building, and embodied carbon footprints for each of the six models were quantified. The study highlighted that up to 31% of embodied carbon footprint was avoided from the building. Model M1 (G25XS280) yielded the highest whereas model M4 (G35XS460) was the lowest in contribution. However, together with the growing interest in the concept of the smart city, cities are often pursuing other goals that may be in conflict with the characteristics of a smart city. For example, sustainability is an established goal of future urban development everywhere. Meanwhile, the promotion of economy development is often the major driver of smart city initiatives, but a high degree of economic competitiveness is only one of the components of a smart city. Moreover, sustainability and economic competitiveness have few elements in common. Which urban aspects should hence be promoted to conjugate the different goals? This paper compares the indicators used in rating systems for a smart city, a sustainable city, and a competitive city to figure out what these concepts seek to achieve and where they complement and contrast. The scope is to highlight aspects that should be p...","PeriodicalId":38108,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2093761X.2015.1057875","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60075406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
