One form of this can be a unique place with which many different things can be associated based on experience (flora, fauna, persons associated with it, other places, events, etc.). Through the connection between them, these – generally salient – connected things can also evoke the image of the place. These associations can also appear in the names of the place, which can be realized linguistically in several different ways. In one form, no change in the linguistic designation of the intermediary element can be observed. In another, the same mechanism can change the word form: speakers transform the metonymically activated word with conjunctions or lexical elements, according to the characteristics of their language, to denote the target concept. All types must be considered to build a comprehensive picture of how the mechanism of metonymy manifests itself in naming. Building on this definition, the second part of the study examines previous onomastic statements and reviews them from a cognitive perspective, moving from common to rarer metonymic patterns (place instead of place, person instead of place, plant instead of place, animal instead of place, material instead of place, event/circumstance instead of place, etc.). It is based on the preconception that the characters of fairy tale novels go through a marked process of individualization as a result of novelization, in contrast to the characters of fairy tales, due to which the genre gradually moves away from depicting archetypes and tries to endow its characters with more independent personality traits. This process of individualization is also reflected in the personal names found in fairy tale novels, which function as an external marker of the personal identity of the characters. In the first section, the study reviews the naming habits of folk tales and then draws attention to the specific name-giving motivations along which fairy tale novels give their characters names. The study notes that real personal names, fantasy names, and descriptive names found in folk tales go through transformation in fairy tale novels, and a secretive naming style, associative naming, and name-giving in line with the magical function of names, playfulness and comic effect grow in importance. Bárth","doi":"10.29178/nevtert.2021.12","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29178/nevtert.2021.12","url":null,"abstract":"The study provides insight into research that began in 2017 and aims to publish a fragmentary collection of geographical names from Bács-Kiskun County that has survived in manuscript form. It reviews the history of efforts to collect the toponyms of the county, presents the unique properties of the name stock, outlines the principles of processing and possible methods of publication, and highlights some aspects of onomastic analysis. Much of the tangible results of collecting geographical names of Bács-Kiskun County in the 1970s and 1980s were destroyed or lost, while others were scattered in the archives of various institutions. The author of the study has identified and collected manuscript materials in recent years and edited them into an up-to-date database. The collection has been supplemented with historical evidence and maps. The over 40,000 entries making up the database are stored in a structure that can be connected to the Hungarian National Toponym Registry currently under development. The collection of place names is already searchable on a website created for the purpose, and in the future, it will be supplemented with present-day collections. The database may also be published in the form of a name dictionary. {"title":"Idegen tulajdonnevek ejtése a magyar szinkronban","authors":"Andrea Parapatics","doi":"10.29178/nevtert.2021.4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29178/nevtert.2021.4","url":null,"abstract":"The paper investigates Hungarian voice actors’ attitudes to the language quality of texts they have to read for dubbing and narrating foreign language audiovisual products as part of an overall study that is theoretically and practically supported by the most popular voice actors of present-day Hungary and the trade union of Hungarian voice actors. Besides summarizing some general results, the study focuses on a research topic emphasized by many participants: the problems of the pronunciation of foreign proper names in Hungarian dubbing and narration. The results are based on surveyanswers from 69 Hungarian voice actors with different personal and professional backgrounds. The participants name many factors that affect the final quality of the products and reveal many negative examples of topics presented in the paper. Since most foreign language audiovisual products released for Hungarian television, cinemas, film theatres, and even to the Hungarian consumers of online streaming services are dubbed or narrated in Hungarian, and this being the only accessible way of watching these products for most people, the quality of their language should be studied, regardless of the dichotomy of attitudes on watching audiovisual products in Hungarian or original (or other) languages. Summary of a habilitation dissertation \u0000The dissertation discusses the linguistic and onomastic features of a culturally motivated name type, i.e. place names reflecting (former) ecclesiastical possession. With the advent and spread of Christianity in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, buildings and estates belonging to the Church were erected and named accordingly. Many such place names have been preserved to the present day and new ones could also emerge based on analogy. The first chapter of the thesis describes how the changes in the geographical landscape influenced the contemporary linguistic landscape and, eventually, the place naming patterns of the language. Chapter Two focuses on the historical background: how the church system and the institutions of the monastic orders were established in Medieval Hungary and sustained in later centuries. Chapter Three enumerates the sources from which the relevant place names were gathered and explains the setup of the database that served as a basis of the analysis. Chapter Four provides a comprehensive description of the collected name forms with respect to lexical, morphological, syntactic, motivational and denotative features, according to the classical periods in the history of the Hungarian language. Chapter Five discovers the trends in the development of the name forms concerning time, space and use. Personal names of early Hungarian history and the posterity \u0000The topic of the paper is how people of modern times attempt to approach the onomasticon of personal names of the past, of which they lack sufficient knowledge; and how they create a picture of it for themselves and their peers. The paper presents the topic with the help of examples from different eras and genres of cultural history. The paper is based on sources, originating from centuries later, of personal names of the Hungarian Middle Ages, especially the time of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (the end of the 9th century). In the case of the 13th-century Gesta Hungarorum, the intentions of the author and the methods he applied to create and give personal names to narrate the events of the Conquest, of which he had little knowledge, can be easily identified. \u0000The writers and poets of the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century – which was the era of national awakening, language reform and romanticism – also exemplify how authors could use old or create new personal names in their historical works influenced by the conditions of their era. Continuing the topic, the paper discusses the process and methods of renewing the onomasticon of first names in national contexts, the role of first names registries from this point of view, and how these often paint a misleading picture of their subject, and thus Hungarian history. {"title":"A kognitív térkép és a névhasználat","authors":"Katalin Reszegi","doi":"10.29178/nevtert.2019.7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29178/nevtert.2019.7","url":null,"abstract":"The cognitive map and the use of names \u0000In this paper, the author attempts to provide a general summary of the relationship between the cognitive map and spatial concepts on the one hand, and between the onomasticon related to the cognitive map and discourses about space on the other hand, focusing on universal as well as culturally specific features. To this end, the author summarizes and interprets all the relevant results of national and international research from the areas of geography, socio-geography, anthropology, psychology, socio-onomastics and cognitive linguistics. Space is made up of different places and their relationships, which are represented on the cognitive map. At the same time, the development of the cognitive map is governed by many factors. In addition to one’s own experiences of the geographical environment. A significant proportion of geographic knowledge also results from different sources or from a combination of sources. In this context, the linguistic-cultural background also influences the individual’s geographical concepts and spatial cognition. At the same time, there are general features, organizing principles in spatial cognition resulting from the mechanisms of cognition, which influence the development of the mental map and name-giving practices as well. A good example is that one can only define a place in relation to another place, and this relation is often reflected in place names. Closely connected to this, is the view of centre-periphery relations in space, which is often manifested in discourse about places and sometimes in the meanings of place names, as well. The connotative meaning attached to words can also be mentioned as a common feature, and this is present both in the organization of discourse about space and in place names.
