A digital ecosystem is the dynamic and synergetic complex of Digital Communities consisting of interconnected, interrelated and interdependent digital species situated in a digital environment, that interact as a functional unit and are linked together through actions, information and transaction flows. Digital ecosystems integrate various cutting-edge technologies including ontologies, agent-based and self-organizing systems, swarm intelligence, ambient intelligence, data mining etc. The synergetic effects of these methodologies results in a more efficient, effective, reliable and secure system. The application of DES within the health domain would transform the way in which health information is created, stored, accessed, used, managed, analyzed and shared, and would bring an innovative breakthrough within health domain. In this paper, we illustrate how the DES design methodology can be implemented within the health domain. We focus on the key factors associated with the DES design. The design methodology framework allows better control over the design process and serves as a navigating tool during the digital health ecosystems design.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127461788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to analyze the execution capacity of Web service workflows and to plan the workflow control, queuing theory can be used to describe the average performance behavior of a workflow. By addressing capacity planning of Web service workflows, resource usage becomes more and more important. Capacity planning and performance measurement are crucial to ensure that the workflow execution remains feasible and SLA violations due to overload are avoided. Thus, this paper presents a capacity planning approach for Web service workflows based on queuing theory to support capacity planning decisions. Further we describe an optimization algorithm how to achieve an optimal utilization of the invoked Web services at minimal costs.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125560648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combination of such communication, coordination and cooperation leads to new organisational forms and scenarios within the digital ecosystem space that require technological support. Convergence refers to the move towards concurrently coupled telecommunications services with enterprise and Internet data. Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is a telecommunications solution that uses a data network such as the Internet to transport voice traffic. VoIP data is transported alongside other data over an existing network. VoIP has introduced significant cost savings, functionality and convenience that is functionally comparable to traditional telecommunication offerings. However, current IT&T solutions have failed to use this powerful technology beyond simple telephony applications. This paper presents a flexible VoIP interactive voice response (IVR) interface that offers simplified convergence of telecommunications services that are coupled with enterprise and Internet data.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121431651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The common memory-based metrics are Pearson correlation and cosine, however, their use is not always the most appropriate or sufficiently justified. In this paper, we analyze these two metrics together with the less common mean squared difference (MSD) to discover their advantages and drawbacks in very important aspects such as the impact when introducing different values of k-neighborhoods, minimization of the MAE error, capacity to carry out a sufficient number of predictions, percentage of correct and incorrect predictions and behavior when attempting to recommend the n-best items. The paper lists the results and practical conclusions that have been obtained after carrying out a comparative study of the metrics based on 135 experiments on the MovieLens database of 100,000 ratios.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134180434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a dominant search tool, search engines usually return millions of search results in a long flat list in which many or even most of the results can be irrelevant. The long flat list conveys nothing about knowledge structure related to the retrieved results and personal search preferences and interests are not explored. Although some search engines try to cluster the Web results, the automatically formed titles and knowledge hierarchy is prone to mismatching the searcherpsilas human mental model. In digital ecosystems, while many different search tools are available, they are not integrated. To address these issues, a search framework which combines categorization, clustering, ontology, and personalization is proposed, and thus the quality of search results in digital ecosystems is expected to be boosted.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134185050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most software projects today are distributed, raising a whole slate of new issues of management, coordination, licensing, stakeholder involvement, specification, quality assurance (in particular testing) and maintenance. While there has been much discussion of the political and economic aspects of outsourcing, the technical consequences and issues of globalized software development are not completely understood. This talk presents a number of research challenges in distributed software engineering. It introduces a number of organizational and technical solutions that we have found to be efficient in industrial practice. On the educational side, it builds on our experience at ETH -- in particular our courses on \"software engineering for outsourced and offshore development\" and our multi-university distributed project course -- to discuss how to integrate distributed software development into the teaching of modern software engineering principles and practices.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115961148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamics of this transfer and its overall effectiveness depends on social capital and how the synergies generated by social capital can impact the co-ordination between member-nodes which is necessary for the sustenance of a digital network depends. Conventional network design featuring a central node has not been as successful in building sustainability in projects as anticipated. We propose that adopting a more community centric design for these interventions can improve their sustainability and lead to the evolution of a more complex and multi functional ICT enabled socio-technical system. In this context, we present the concept of digital ecosystems for using ICT as a means of information delivery to the masses. A digital ecosystem (DE) describes an ICT enabled network that displays associative and autopieotic properties capable of self sustenance and of expansion through heightened inclusion and growth. We conclude by presenting the case of the DEAL (digital ecosystem for agriculture and livelihood) project, a rural development initiative in agriculture in Northern India to illustrate the DE approach.","PeriodicalId":380627,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115528078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
