The assessment is based on the measurement of several material samples. The MCK comprises two conical waveguide horn transitions and two sections of low-loss corrugated waveguide. A gap between the two corrugated waveguides allows the material samples to be inserted into the system during measurement. The MCK is attached to a THz Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), which measures S-parameters, in the frequency domain, of a material under test (MUT). A computer-based algorithm employing an iterative calculation derives values for material parameters (e.g. permittivity) from the measured S-parameters of the MUT. A MCK has been evaluated over the frequency range 0.75 THz to 1.1 THz, to assess the plausibility of results that can be obtained using such a technique. Two VNAs utilizing frequency extender heads were used for the investigation, with measurements being made with reference to a range of different calibration techniques and different calibration standards. Whilst some of the results obtained look reasonable, a significant proportion of the results were either difficult to interpret or showed inexplicable (i.e. non-physical) behavior. This indicates that much work is still needed before this technique can be used routinely for the measurement of material parameters at these very high frequencies.","PeriodicalId":380332,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 9th UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT)","volume":"52 56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124621150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extreme strong near field of SSP mode is very attractive to develop novel terahertz (THz) electronic source. In this paper, SSP-assisted enhanced Terahertz vacuum electronic sources on the metallic grating have been studied with the help of particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation at the frequency near 1THz. Besides, in order to improve the output power of this kind of THz electronic source, three different gradient metasurfaces on the metallic grating are proposed and investigated. One method is to increase the lattice periodicity with a constant grating filling-factor, the second is decreasing lattice periodicity but with a constant groove width and the third one is increasing the lattice periodicity with groove width unchanged. For each case, different variation ratio is optimized by PIC simulation and there is a different variation ratio where the output power can be increased compared with the conventional structure by the same electron beam and other optimized conditions. PIC simulation results show that the maximum output power can be increased by 10% compared with the traditional metallic grating. Our studies about the excitation of SSP on the gradient metallic grating are helpful to develop this kind of THz vacuum electronic source.","PeriodicalId":380332,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 9th UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT)","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122438370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The techniques for reducing the cost of the array in the past several decades are revealed. Secondly, the basic theory and the principle of the patch antenna array are introduced. The theory of array is proposed in this paper, which makes use of the mutual coupling between the elements. Thirdly, to demonstrate the proposed idea, several microstrip patch antenna arrays are designed, e.g. E plane sparse microstrip arrays, H plane sparse microstrip array and 2-D spares array. Finally, a conclusion can be proved that we can reduce the number of active elements by using mutual coupling in order to decrease the cost of array, which has an approximately equal aperture efficiency.","PeriodicalId":380332,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 9th UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133687380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This contribution describes the performance optimisation of an LNA used in a 183GHz receiver chain. Device optimisation includes variation in impedance transformation between waveguide and LNA millimetre-wave integrated circuit (MMIC), and under different MMIC DC bias conditions, to achieve required performance. Extensive and accurate LNA measurements have been made and, in addition to the optimisation procedures used, example results will be presented, described and discussed.","PeriodicalId":380332,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 9th UK-Europe-China Workshop on Millimetre Waves and Terahertz Technologies (UCMMT)","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132171601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
