It emphasises the search for a balance of the economic, social and environmental perspectives. The strategic adoption of sustainability practices changes management and organisational characteristics. Nonetheless, the question that remains is whether the opposite can happen. The study aims to match some of the characteristics of a sample of companies with sustainability strategy. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was used for the collected data. Data from five companies' characteristics were used as independent variables and related to 15 aspects of corporate strategy and sustainability practices as dependent variables. The results show that sustainability is definitively in the strategic agenda; it has an important influence in the competitive strategy of the studied companies.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"231"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43129174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The persistence of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing has been identified as a major factor contributing to the overexploitation of marine resources worldwide. Unfortunately, this vast area requires a great deal of resources and costs hundreds of million dollars to protect. Due to decisions at different times, the patrol boat bases are located at the east side of Australia while most illegal activities are at the North West, which is located a vast distance from where the asset is. Instead of piecemeal development in the past, the current situation has called for a model-based design methodology for the support system design. This paper reviews methodologies commonly used in enterprise systems design and outlines a system model that captures elements of the support system and improves the processes of developing a viable solution to the problem.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"341"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42073799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exchange of digital data and data processing are pre-requisites for improvements of agility from initial idea to disassembly and recycling. The 3D PDF format offers not only the ability to visualise 3D data without installing or licensing a CAD system, but also allows the data to be dynamically adjusted, commented and animated in a template container. In this paper, a concept for the use of 3D PDF is presented regarding a defined workflow for disassembly and recycling within the product creation process. After having identified a distinctive field of studies with the help of the model, it is to work out a new use case. Later in the paper, a workflow is developed and finally a prototypical example of the 3D PDF document is implemented.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"250"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44417586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forecasting the human behaviours and assessing how human factors affect the process performance are very difficult but fundamental for strategic decision-making and sustainable manufacturing. In this context, the research highlights the need of predictive methods to design human-centred smart manufacturing systems from the early design stages as an important part of the overall assessment of process sustainability. The paper defines a model to early assess human factors to be integrated with other existing models (i.e., cost estimation and lifecycle assessment) to evaluate manufacturing process sustainability. The proposed integrated method can be fruitfully used to support the design of sustainable manufacturing systems by taking into account also the impact on workers. An industrial case study focusing on packaging machines design is presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method and its adoption to propose re-design action promoting sustainability.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"206-230"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJASM.2017.088511","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42948230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has two main components, the first one deals with IGES feature extraction and the second one deals with autonomous CNC code generation based on the Cartesian coordinates using various mathematical formulae. The procedure is carried out in MATLAB environment through some developed functions to support wire design technique in CAD by means of 3D line segmentation. In this approach, the digital design of the wire is constructed from multiple 3D line segments in reference to the 3D teeth scan image (STL file). The developed methodology has three steps consisting of an IGES model pre-processing, automated coordinate extraction and CNC bending code generation. The developed methodology is limited to the CAD design through multiple line segments and has been verified with a case study.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"321"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48892689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So-called distributed manufacturing systems represent an ideal approach to meet challenges regarding individualisation of products, customer proximity or more sustainable production. Networks of smart and agile micro-production units lead to a rationalisation of the supply chain and therefore to an increase of sustainability. In this paper, the actual state of the art in distributed manufacturing is presented. Afterwards, sustainability oriented reasons for a trend towards distributed manufacturing networks are explained. Then, evolutionary stages in the development of factories are represented describing their characteristics at every stage. Finally, a framework of possible network models for distributed manufacturing networks of smart and agile mini-factories is provided and enforced by examples from industrial practice. The paper closes with a discussion of the proposed framework and an outlook on future needs in research.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"185"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48932566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, they can also mean a loss of financial resources designed for primary needs of the society, an excessive burden on the environment or new health risks for the population. This analysis complements our long-term research so as to promote positive, safe, efficient and environment-friendly technology innovation in the EU. The main goal of this research is to analyse technology innovation in the developing EU countries, mainly by the WIPO patent analysis (1980-2014), compared with selected indicators and related determinants. In terms of the main research methodology, our calculated and summarised patenting data were completed by the bibliometric analysis of technology innovation activities of these countries to identify relevant trends. For better benchmarking, as the key indicators of a national technological performance were chosen: granted technology patents, compared with other indicators such as a number of utility models, industrial designs, and trademarks. According to our study, the most successful technology-developing countries of the EU are particularly Poland, Hungary, Romania as well as Greece and Bulgaria. Why is this so? We will also include our study mainly focused on the developing EU countries.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49252071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper provides an overview of the issues associated with the use of paper-based documentation in aircraft line maintenance and describes the development of a novel concept for contextualised documentation to address these issues. Using ontology-based data access, the system is able to retrieve relevant documents approximately twice as fast as existing relational database systems and provides support for a wide variety of file types. Limitations of the developed system are software vendor dependency, compatibility issues between integrated software solutions and lack of support for automatic mappings. Nevertheless, the developed system provides a proof of concept for a mobile tool to overcome the weaknesses of maintenance documentation in line maintenance, working towards increased operational efficiency, reduction of human factor induced maintenance errors and reduced paper consumption.","PeriodicalId":38028,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agile Systems and Management","volume":"10 1","pages":"160-179"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJASM.2017.086159","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47466787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
