Modulation classification in MIMO systems present the added difficulty of having to deal with a set of mixed signals as they are received at the receiving antenna array. Whereas, in narrowband SISO systems, the channel was assumed to be a simple complex constant in most cases, the narrowband MIMO channel presents a matrix channel. Without having an estimate of the channel matrix, it does not seem possible to perform modulation classification. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) allows the separation of independent sources in the case the number of receiving antennas is equal to or larger than the number of transmitting antennas. Here we extend previous work in the area of modulation classification in MIMO systems. Though it is applicable for any number of transmitting and receiving antennas, it makes a particular impact on MIMO systems which utilize a large number of transmitting antennas and or complex modulation schemes.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125845494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A recent Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) study suggests that this problem is further amplified for military systems because not only demand for more bandwidth is increasing but portion of the spectrum primarily allocated to the military is recommended for commercial use. PCAST report also suggests that spectrum congestion is mainly due to inefficient use of spectrum rather than spectrum scarcity. This paper deals with challenges evolving due to coexistence of various commercial and military communications systems in wideband non-contiguous spectrum. A non-contiguous spectrum environment is characterized by spectrum holes fragmented across frequency range of interest. %This paper, in particular, focuses on different types of interference which will affect the quality of a spectrum hole and its utility for spectrum sharing application. In particular, we discuss the impact of spectrum sharing from the system perspective including hardware design, physical (PHY) layer intricacies, and medium access control (MAC) layer spectrum management. Since the number of spectrum holes required is application dependent, non-contiguous waveform design and pertinent design modifications and MAC layer improvements are also an intrinsic part of this paper.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126531923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The received signal needs to be equalized in order to restore the transmitted information. Turbo equalization is a promising approach to deal with the inter-symbol interference occurring at the receiver. The iterative exchange of soft information between the equalizer and the decoder improves the decision reliability and hence reduces the bit error probability compared to conventional receivers. However, the necessary resource-demanding soft-input soft-output algorithms require a high processing performance to ensure real-time capability. In this paper, we will present a high-speed implementation of a turbo equalizer for SDRs with digital signal processing being performed on general purpose processors (GPP). The implementation will utilize linear MMSE filtering and suboptimal algorithms like overlapping sub-trellis MAX-Log-MAP decoding, approximations of mathematical operations, parallelization methods such as threading-based pipelining, and processor specific optimizations like single instruction multiple data (SIMD) commands. We will present the processing gains for each optimization level, highlight the performance loss for the suboptimal modifications and analyze the latency introduced by the pipelined processing. So far, transmissions with data rates up to 5.4 Mbit/s can be decoded in real-time with negligible performance loss and tolerable delay.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121445473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a three-stage technique for the joint reduction of OOB radiation and PAPR, therefore minimizing the spectral regrowth after the power amplifier as well as signal distortion. In the first and the second stages, the OFDM data vector is partitioned into contiguous blocks that are naturally suited for PAPR reduction using partial transmit sequences (PTS). Since edge blocks/subcarriers have more impact on the OOB radiation, each edge block is further divided into smaller interleaved sub-blocks, and optimized phase rotations are applied to each sub-block to suppress the spectral sidelobes. Following the frequency domain techniques, optimum phase rotation for the time domain OFDM symbol is calculated to achieve smoother transition with the previous symbol, which further reduces the OOB spectrum. The proposed method improves the joint containment in frequency and power dimensions, along which the OFDM signal suffers from high spreading.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128752030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model applies to both non-cooperative and cooperative (CT) networks. To our knowledge, this is the first work to model the lifetime of multi-hop networks that jointly considers the dynamics of MAC layer link admission, routing layer queuing and energy evolution. We propose a new algorithm that exploits the Stochastic Shortest Path (SSP) structure and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to efficiently solve the problem. Numerical results on the optimal lifetime of non-CT and CT networks are presented to validate the model.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127492385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The threats exist both during service discovery and service invocation, and should be mitigated through the same security framework. Through the use of a modern identity management system which offers a combination of key attestation and attributes for access control, more threats can be appropriately addressed. The combination of discovery and identity management results in a more comprehensive threat mitigation, scalable maintenance of security related information and easier federations of security domains. The architecture and protocols of this system combination are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129100968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communications is one major area that offers opportunities for such improvement. In particular, mobile communications capabilities enable the establishment of communications connectively without an existing infrastructure, especially in emergency situations. Aerial platforms, such as unmanned aerial systems (UASs), have been shown to be ideal for use in maintaining mobile networks. They enable deployment in areas impossible for other vehicles to access while maintaining the necessary mobility to provide coverage to highly dynamic or widely dispersed networks. When properly embedded into the architecture of a communications network, the cooperation and control of multiple UASs can form a multi-layered hierarchical mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). This UAS aided network provides transport of flows that span longer distances, yield better reliability, and achieve higher throughput. Although MANET can potentially offer multiple routes for each given source and destination pair, it is important for each network node to select an \"appropriate\" communications path that can satisfy the mission requirements. In this work, we propose an agent-based bandwidth reservation technique, called the Real-time Communications Resource Allocator (CRA). The CRA addresses the route selection problem by providing a process, architecture, and algorithm to allocate bandwidth to a task based on its resource requirements and currently available resources before the task starts. A test bed was constructed to prove this concept. Test results demonstrated that the agent is able to reserve and dynamically re-distribute bandwidth to missions, if needed, according to the mission requirements, priority, and link assessment during the On-Mission phase.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127331664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Target tracking has many commercial, civilian, and military applications. The accuracy of target tracking is highly affected in indoor environments where the majority of connections are NLOS. A novel tracking estimator based on semidefinite programming (SDP) with ability to mitigate the NLOS propagation is derived. Requiring no statistical information about the NLOS propagation, the proposed SDP algorithm estimates the NLOS biases jointly with the location and velocity of the target. The performance of the proposed estimator is evaluated through computer simulations where ray tracing is used to simulate the NLOS biases. It will be shown that the proposed SDP estimator outperforms the classic extended Kalman filter as well as other recently proposed estimators in NLOS environments.","PeriodicalId":379382,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2013 - 2013 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130445067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
