This paper proposes two higher order spectra techniques, namely the power spectrum and the slices of bi-spectrum used for the analysis of induction machine stator current leading to the detection of electrical failures within the rotor. Experimental signals have been analyzed highlighting that bi-spectrum results show their superiority in the accurate detection of rotor broken bars. Even when the induction machine is rotating at a low level of shaft load, the rotor fault detection is efficient.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123916869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increased usage of electrical machines and the higher demands on their availability requires new approaches to fault detection. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to detect a certain fault on a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) by using multiple similar motors, or a single motor, to build a norm of expected behavior by monitoring signal relations. This means that the machine is monitored in an unsupervised way. Four levels of an increased temperature in the rotor magnets have been investigated. The results are based on simulations and the signals used (for relation measurements) are available in a real motor installation. The method shows promising results in detecting two of the temperature faults.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125849567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

REs make rise loop currents which can be translated in the complex domain through a Fortescue's space-transformation. Extensive simulations show that mainly 2(p±1)-pole current space vectors are stimulated by REs in 2p-pole SMs, with typical cardioid-shaped patterns. The simulation results were justified by using multi-phase symmetrical components, and theoretical formulas were obtained for fault severity assessment starting from loci amplitudes. Experimental verification was shown in a companion paper, where a Labview virtual instrument detects natural and artificial REs in a 17kVA four-pole generator.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129355374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on a time varying conductance of the inner void, subjected to multistress conditions: voltage, temperature and pressure. A simple lumped circuit macro-model simulates the global effects of PD activity: the different parameters influencing the discharge phenomenon in the void are taking into account by using a physical approach resulting in a time varying conductance inside the circuit. The evaluated PD activity has been compared with experimental and simulated one for the accessible and inaccessible part of the system. A discussion on the observed changes in PD activity has been reported.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129779119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the design of hydroelectric generator high voltage stator windings the characteristic electrical field strength can vary significantly leading to various electrical stresses. In addition, the operation temperature of stator windings can vary leading to various thermal stresses. Therefore, it is preferable to take into account the combined electrical and thermal stresses in the lifetime estimation and use the electro-thermal ageing model for lifetime estimation. In this study the parameters for an electro-thermal ageing model of asphaltic-mica and epoxy-mica stator windings were estimated. The operation history of a generator database was used. Based on the estimated parameters, electro-thermal ageing curves for temperature Class A and Class F stator winding insulation systems were developed. On the basis of the results of the study, it is proposed that in the type tests of new insulation systems with high voltage stress a combined thermal and electrical ageing test with both stresses applied simultaneously should be used.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126563714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional optimization method requires solving complex nonlinear equations. Moreover, constraints should be selected such that the number of solved equations equals the variables number to obtain a unique solution. The problem becomes complicated as the number of disconnected phases is more than two. Genetic algorithm is used to solve such optimization problem since it does not involve solving nonlinear equations. Comparison between the conventional optimization technique and GA is carried out using finite element analysis which simulates the machine flux corresponding to each optimum solution.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122158001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This strategy is based on the effects of the inductance variations coming from fault, over zero-sequence voltage. This voltage is measured when a predefined inverter-switching pattern is applied, allowing then decoupling the strategy from the motor fundamental excitation. For the evaluation of the feasibility of this proposal, a multiple-coupled circuit model of the IM is used. Accordingly, this paper presents a new diagnostic method that allows the real-time detection and localization of single power switch open-circuit faults in VSI-fed PWM motor drives. The proposed algorithm is quite simple and just requires the measured motor phase currents and their corresponding reference signals, available from the main control system. Several simulation and experimental results using a vector controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor drive are presented, showing the diagnostic method effectiveness, through a relatively fast detection time and its robustness against false alarms.","PeriodicalId":379207,"journal":{"name":"8th IEEE Symposium on Diagnostics for Electrical Machines, Power Electronics & Drives","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127596171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
