The traditional trailer axle design mainly focuses on the overall performance of the trailer axle. Only when the local performance does not meet the requirements will local performance optimization be done, such as local heat treatment to improve local strength. Such a design results in an uneven distribution of axle performance and excess performance in some local structures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the weight reduction on the premise of ensuring the structural dimensions of the outer surface of the axle remain unchanged and the reliability of the axle.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The axle is parameterized by computer aided design, and the optimized axle finite element model based on computer aided engineering is established and verified by taking the eight dimensions of the axle cavity structure which affect the performance as parameters. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the axle cavity structure size and axle weight based on multiobjective optimization, and eight optimized size parameters of axle cavity structure are obtained.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The total weight of the optimized axle of TM1314 is reduced by 10.2 kg, and the weight reduction ratio reaches 10.7%. The purpose of the study is to introduce an algorithm, which attempts to sample the high-value transitions in the prioritized buffer, and uniformly sample from the normal experience buffer, improving sample efficiency of offline reinforcement learning, as well as alleviating the “extrapolation error” commonly arising in offline RL.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The authors propose a new structure of experience replay architecture, which consists of double experience replies, a prioritized experience replay and a normal experience replay, supplying samples for policy updates in different training phases. At the first training stage, the authors sample from prioritized experience replay according to the calculated priority of each transitions. At the second training stage, the authors sample from the normal experience replay uniformly. The combination of the two experience replies is initialized by the same offline data set.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The proposed method eliminates out-of-distribution problem in an offline RL regime, and promotes training by leveraging a new efficient experience replay. The authors evaluate their method on D4RL benchmark, and the results reveal that the algorithm can achieve superior performance over the state-of-the-art offline RL algorithm. The ablation study proves that the authors’ experience replay architecture plays an important role in terms of improving final performance, data-efficiency and training stability.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000Because of the extra addition of prioritized experience replay, the proposed method increases the computational burden and has the risk of changing data distribution due to the combined sample strategy. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to use the experience replay block effectively and efficiently further.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000Offline RL is susceptible to the quality and coverage of pre-collected data, which may be not easy to be collected from specific environment, demanding practitioners to handcraft behavior policy to interact with environment for gathering data.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The proposed approach focuses on the experience replay architecture for offline RL, and empirically demonstrates the superiority of the algorithm on data efficiency and final performance over conservative Q-learning across diverse D4RL tasks. In particular, the authors compare different variants of their experience replay block, and the experiments show that the stages, when to sample from the priority buffer, play an important role in the algorithm. Thus, this study aims to provide a unified step for different laser-line length calibration requirements for laser profile measurement (LPM) systems.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u00003D LPM is the process of converting physical objects into 3D digital models, wherein camera laser-plane calibration is critical for ensuring system precision. However, conventional calibration methods for 3D LPM typically use a calibration target to calibrate the system for a single laser-line length, which needs multiple calibration patterns and makes the procedure complicated. In this paper, a unified calibration method was proposed to automatically calibrate the camera laser-plane parameters for the LPM systems with different laser-line lengths. The authors designed an elaborate planar calibration target with different-sized rings that mounted on a motorized linear platform to calculate the laser-plane parameters of the LPM systems. Then, the camera coordinates of the control points are obtained using the intersection line between the laser line and the planar target. With a new proposed error correction model, the errors caused by hardware assembly can be corrected. To validate the proposed method, three LPM devices with different laser-line lengths are used to verify the proposed system. Experimental results show that the proposed method can calibrate the LPM systems with different laser-line lengths conveniently with standard steps.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The repeatability and accuracy of the proposed calibration prototypes were evaluated with high-precision workpieces. Temperature regulation in the presence of different type of disturbances and dealing with nonlinear dynamics with large dead time (up to a few minutes) are some undesirable factors that have to be considered in the controller design procedure of the oven systems. Due to these factors, the classical PID controller tuned using Cohen-Coon or Ziegler–Nichol’s tuning methods often fails to meet satisfactory closed-loop performance.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000In this paper, to deal with the limitations on the oven system due to the undesirable factors, a hierarchical automaton-guided form controller has been designed.
