Such one Web-based educational tool embodies a software audio terminal that allows its users to conduct full-duplex, real time interactive audio conversations across the Internet. The authors discuss the main design issues of that audio terminal and report on several real-world experiments carried out over Internet connections that confirm the efficacy of the strategies they have adopted.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. Al-Bahadly","doi":"10.1109/IECON.1999.819367","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IECON.1999.819367","url":null,"abstract":"Information on rotor position is essential for controlling the operation of switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Conventional SRM drives utilize optical or electromagnetic rotor position sensors which provide a rotor position reference signal while the rotor is in operation. The fitting of a rotor position transducer on an SRM requires additional electrical connections, additional cost and a potential source of unreliability. Considerable attention has recently been applied to various methods for sensorless rotor position measurement, generally based on measurement of phase current and flux and a preknowledge of the magnetic characteristics. This paper presents two methods which deduce sensorless rotor position information by monitoring the excitation signals of the motor phases whilst the inductance is rising. This is done without the injection of diagnostic current pulses and has the advantages that the measured current is large and mutual effects from other phases are negligible.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. Due to the excellent homogeneity and reproducibility of the CVD deposition techniques, feature size control and homogeneity is superior over a whole wafer lot. Minimum feature size achieved up to now is 25 nm in linewidth. All MOS type materials like polysilicon, silicon oxide and nitride, aluminum, titanium nitride and tungsten were etched with dimensions down to 100 nm or below. The structure definition technique is transferable to any technology line, because only standard process steps like CVD deposition, dry and wet etching, and conventional optical lithography are necessary.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. However, generating good job shop schedules in a reasonable time remains a challenging problem, because of its inherent computational complexity. Dynamic job shop scheduling (DJSS) has been proven to be an intractable analytical problem and is largely solved by combinatorial analysis in traditional research. The NP-complete nature of the problem forces many assumptions to be made, which limit the use of analytical methods in practical problem solving. In this paper, the authors propose a new scheme named minimum queuing delay (MQD) for scheduling in a dynamic job shop derived from fair queuing service disciplines for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. This scheme combines the job process-time and work-content of jobs in the current queues into the dispatching methodology. The main advantage of this scheme is that the queuing delays suffered by all the jobs at every machine are minimized, leading to a minimized maximum completion time (make-span). A smaller queuing delay variation is also achieved using this algorithm. Results from experiments conducted on a testbed with several embedded controllers are presented.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. This technology enables an unskilled operator to work with great accuracy. First, we consider a dynamic model of the press-in type tunneling machine. The model describes how the position and posture of the machine change when the inclination of its head is changed. The unknown parameter included in the model is assumed with a Kalman filter. We show the result of applying this technique to a construction of a communication conduit. Moreover, we compare simulations that we used to reproduce the experimental conditions with the construction results. The simulation results showed that the model accurately reproduced the behavior of the machine.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. Then the low-cost DTV video decoder is studied in detail and a novel approach of a low-cost video decoder is presented. This approach combines downscaling and embedded compression within the MPEG decoding loop to save both memory and bandwidth. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach efficiently preserves the quality of the output image.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. The method overcomes the limitations of classical feedforward neural network-based approaches via applying uniform structures derived from the Euler-Lagrange equations in the most general and formal level. Being a compromise between the classic hard computing (HC) and soft computing (SC) the typical difficulties as the a priori unknown number of the necessary nodes and free parameters, the scaling problems regarding the applicable range of the parameters are evaded. On this basis a relatively simple uniform structure of reduced number of parameters appropriate for real time tuning can be obtained. Several ancillary procedures also independent of the details of the particular task to be solved are applied to support machine learning, too. The operation of the method is illustrated via simulation in the case of a 3 active and one passive DOF SCARA arm used for polishing the surface of a bell-shaped work-piece.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. However, presence of the air gap flux harmonics gives rise to undesirable torque pulsations. These torque pulsations result in performance deterioration in high-performance drive applications. In this paper, we present a systematic way to design and implement a new instantaneous torque controller using discrete iterative learning control (ILC) scheme with the objective of achieving torque ripple minimization. In the proposed scheme, the ILC-based dynamic torque controller compares the desired and the instantaneous motor torques and generates the reference q-axis current (i/sub qs_ref/) that is required to produce ripple-free torque. The instantaneous motor torque is estimated by using an estimator based on MRAS technique. The proposed ILC torque controller is simple to implement from a computational point of view. The effectiveness of the proposed torque controller is demonstrated through computer simulation studies and results obtained verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99. CL and photoluminescence (PL) measurements are discussed on the background of the formation of nanoclusters in the open cages of the zeolite host structure. DAF was mixed with a SnCl/sub 2/ solution and subsequently dried under stirring and annealed in H/sub 2/- or O/sub 2/-ambient to establish metallic Sn or semiconducting SnO/sub 2/ clusters in the zeolite pores. Samples with various nominal weight ratios were prepared, i.e. SnO/sub 2//DAF=0.15-0.8 and Sn/DAF=0.1-0.6. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the nominal incorporation of Sn or SnO/sub 2/ resulted in weak reduction of the lattice constants. At 77 K all samples exhibit a strong CL signal in the blue spectral range, which was clearly visible by the eye, but no significant spectral properties which might be attributed to a nanocluster formation could be deduced. PL measurements at 77 K do not give significant verification of a cluster formation, too. One can conclude that the strong CL mainly originates from the DAF and that the incorporation of Sn or SnO/sub 2/ clusters was either rather poor and/or has no significant influence on the luminescence behavior.","PeriodicalId":378710,"journal":{"name":"IECON'99.
