Currently, the capacities of a MCIES are sized according to the deterministic load and parameters of the system model. However, uncertainty may lead to the failure to achieve the desired performance and affect the sizing of the MCIES. This study explored an optimization model for the proper sizing of the MCIES considering uncertainties to achieve the best economic, environmental and thermal comfort benefits . The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) combined with Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Shannon entropy method were adopted to solve the optimization. Case studies, an actual swimming pool building with MCIES, as the prototype , were used to illustrate the procedure. Moreover, the effects of uncertainty degree and scenario setting were investigated. The results show that the benefits of the proposed approach against the traditional deterministic optimization method for comprehensive consideration of economy, environment and thermal comfort. It also suggests that uncertainty and scenario setting should be careful and proper consideration during the design stage, as they have a significant impact on the results of sizing.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128148088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, there is an emphasis on reducing emissions and energy usage to help mitigate climate change. In this work we demonstrate and test methods for decision-support in early-phase field planning based on proxy modeling and optimization. An optimization model is developed to determine drilling and production schedules, as well as the processing capacities of oil and gas that maximize a key performance indicator. The key performance indicator is a linear combination of NPV and environmental variables, such as the carbon footprint and CO2 emissions. The weight of each variable in the objective function is adjusted by varying the value of the constants. An offshore field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf is used as a case study. Results show that there is a clear trade-off between economic and environmental performance. There are cases, however, where a modest improvement in field environmental performance can be achieved without significantly decreasing its economic value. The paper offers comments and observations about the implementation and inclusion of environmental constraints into early-field development planning.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122823524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, olive tree pruning was treated by both dry (pyrolysis and torrefaction) and wet (hydrothermal carbonization) thermal treatments. Product yield, solid quality and energy consumption were assessed. The solids were characterized by means of chemical and thermogravimetric analysis. For all treatments, coal-like solid products were obtained, with higher heating values of almost 30 MJ/kg in most of the conditions evaluated. Chars obtained from pyrolysis present the greater carbon content (between 76 and 85 wt.%) but also the higher ash content (ranging from 6 to 9 wt.%). The values obtained from torrefaction and HTC are lower, ranging from 60 to 76 wt.% in terms of carbon content. From an energy consumption perspective, torrefaction is suggested to be the most advantageous treatment. The least severe conditions allow to obtain a positive energy balance only with the solid phase considered. Nonetheless, further room for improvement of the processes are at sight as the gas and liquid phases can also be valorised. These results at lab-scale open new avenues for optimization of the thermal treatments proposed at industrial-scale.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127347236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chemical diversity in the cation sublattice of high entropy ceramics has led to many enhanced properties and applications such as reversible energy storage, low temperature water splitting, amorphous-like thermal transport in crystalline solids and enhanced mechanical properties. This work describes the synthesis and mechanical properties of high entropy (HfNbTaTiZr)Cx thin films as a function of carbon content. The nature of the bonding and microstructure evolves as the material transforms from metallic to ceramic to nanocomposite with variations in the quantity and types of carbon, yielding large variations in the film hardness. Through multiple characterization techniques and first principles investigations, we separate the roles of microstructure and bonding characteristics in the mechanical property development of (HfNbTaTiZr)Cx thin films. This study presents a strategy to establish the bonding, structure, and property relationships in chemically disordered high entropy ceramics, largely based on the relative populations of filled or empty antibonding states for which there are new abilities to do so in high configurational entropy systems that exhibit high solubility of diverse cations while retaining rocksalt structure.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128259955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since 2006, the London Protocol has provided a basis in international environmental law to allow carbon dioxide (CO2) storage beneath the seabed when it is safe to do so, and to regulate the injection of CO2 waste streams into sub-seabed geological formations for permanent isolation. However, Article 6 of the London Protocol prohibits the export of waste or other matter for dumping in the marine environment. Therefore in 2019, Contracting Parties to the London Protocol adopted a Resolution to allow provisional application of an amendment to Article 6 of the Protocol to allow export of CO2 for storage in sub-seabed geological formations. This now removed the last significant international legal barrier to carbon capture and storage (CCS), and means that CO2 can be transported across international borders to offshore storage. This paper will describe the background, details and requirements of this provisional application of the CCS export amendment, and the details and requirements of the two associated guidance and guideline documents, and their implications.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121424213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pilot has primarily been designed for the evaluation of various adsorbent materials at realistic conditions where gas composition and steam content of the inlet gas can be varied. The desorption compartment consists of a modular heat exchanger where a hot fluid is used to heat the adsorbent indirectly. Initial experiments using a commercial activated carbon adsorbent show that capture rates above 95% can easily be achieved. However, obtaining high CO2 purity of the gas released from the regenerator will need proper balancing of the under-pressure used to pull out the CO2. In addition, properly balanced recycling of N2 rich gas entering at the top of the regenerator and CO2 rich gas from the top of the cooling section back to the adsorber inlet will be important","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134045299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This demands communication with lesser energy consumption and one such idea of low energy consumption is low energy path selection by a mobile sink node. Path selection requires a good Signal Interference Noise Ratio (SINR) which is calculated for the positioned mobile sink. Thus, a high-quality transmission path is selected by choosing a path to obtain better SINR. MBSR algorithm considers hierarchical clustering schemes and heads are elected to monitor the network. Heads of the clusters communicate to IoT applications using Multiple Input and Multiple Output Dual Antennas. The proposed MBSR scheme utilizes a path optimization technique and finds a suitable path to establish links to end user and real-time environments. The proposed MBSR mechanism employs three phases of execution. Phase 1: Cluster Creation, Phase 2: SINR Analysis for Path Selection. Phase 3: Data transmission to MIMO Devices and in turn forwards to static sinks that connect to end-user using the internet. MBSR improves transmission quality and the proposed scheme is tested for various network parameters to check transmission quality and is compared with existing methodologies.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129786101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper employs two series, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) controllers; Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) to investigate the system responses during line outages for dynamic stability improvement. The commercial version of Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) was used to model the Nigerian 48-bus power system network with simulation of line outages using breakers on lines 6-8 (Oshogbo to Ikeja West transmission stations) and 35-39 (Ugwuaji to Ikot Ekpene transmission stations). SSSC and TCSC were optimally positioned on line 21-28 close to bus 21 (Jos transmission station) after continuation power flow simulation and computation of voltage sensitivity factor of all the load buses. Results show that the two FACTS controllers effectively improved the system stability by reducing the rotor angle and speed and by damping the post outage oscillations of the bus voltage and real power.","PeriodicalId":378433,"journal":{"name":"Materials for Energy eJournal","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130907741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
