To this aim, a two dimensional numerical model considering the non-equilibrium thermal factor, non-Darcy effect and local natural convection was used. The governing equations of PCM and metal foam are discretized using a finite volume method with a collocated grid arrangement. To simulate the melting of PCM, the enthalpy-porosity method is applied which computes the liquid fraction at each iteration, based on the enthalpy balance. The effect of metal foam characteristics (porosity, pores size and base material) and wall heat flux on the PCM melting time were investigated. The result showed that for both wall heat fluxes (4000 W m-2 and 8000 W m-2), foam structure and its mechanical properties have significant influence on the PCM melting time which these effects should be considered.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44086164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems are commonly studied in the literature by means of different approximate analytical methods. In this work, an analytical study of nonlinear oscillators with different combinations of geometric polynomial stiffness nonlinearities is presented. To do this, the method of direct normal forms (DNF) is applied symbolically using Maple software. Closed form (approximate) expressions of the corresponding frequency-amplitude relationships (or backbone curves) are obtained for both e and e2 expansions, and a general pattern for e truncation is presented in the case of odd nonlinear terms. This is extended to a system of two degrees-of-freedom, where linear and nonlinear cubic and quintic coupling terms exist. Considering the non-resonant case, an example is shown to demonstrate how the single mode backbone curves of the two degree-of-freedom system can be computed in an analogous manner to the approach used for the SDOF analysis. Numerical verifications are also presented using COCO numerical continuation toolbox in Matlab for the SDOF examples.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48633433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model is based on the role of linear and nonlinear damping forces in inducing and limiting the amplitude of these vibrations. First, the model prediction is validated using data from previously published high-fidelity direct numerical simulations. Then, linear and nonlinear control are applied to the validated model over a broad range of gain values. The predicted controlled responses are also validated against previously published results from high-fidelity numerical simulations. Based on this validation, it is shown that the single degree-of-freedom model is an effective alternative, in terms of computational cost, to high fidelity simulations in assessing control strategies over broad regions of control gains.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49566731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is found that in Hagen-Poiseuille and plane-Poiseuille flows, Buckingham-Reiner function increases linearly when the pressure gradient increases in the range 1 - 2.5 and then it ascends slowly with the raise of pressure gradient in the range 2.5 - 5. In all of the four kinds of pores size distribution, the fluid’s mean velocity, flow medium’s porosity and permeability are substantially higher in Hagen-Poiseuille fluid rheology than in plane-Poiseuille fluid rheology and, these flow quantities ascend considerably with the raise of pipe radius/channel width and a reverse characteristic is noted for these rheological measures when the power law index parameter increases. The flow medium’s porosity decreases rapidly when the period of the pipes/channels distribution rises from 1 to 2 and it drops very slowly when the period of the pipes/channels rises from 2 to 11.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41616343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By comparing the results with analytical and experimental results, it is found that, despite the simplicity of the SLAU scheme in the absence of tuning variables, it provides reasonable predictions for different turbine blades in point of location and strength of the shocks. The SLAU scheme could converge at a much higher rate, leading to very much lower values of residuals. The SLAU scheme causes about 30% and 20% improvements over the prediction of the shock-induced losses in supersonic and subsonic outlet flows, respectively.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41798541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first approach is based on an interpolation type integration scheme and the second approach is based on Gauss quadrature. The proposed approaches enable a computationally efficient numerical integration for computing stress intensity factors in 2D fracture problems. The efficiency is gained through a comparatively low number of integration points facilitated by higher-order approximation. The integration weights only need to be computed once for a given crack length-to-width ratio and can be applied to arbitrary continuous and smooth stress distributions. The proposed approaches show excellent accuracy. In particular, the Gauss quadrature approach exhibits several orders of magnitude more accuracy compared to the most commonly used trapezoidal integration.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41984613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New challenges have arisen in development of complex carbonates due to fracture network distribution uncertainty, lateral and vertical fluid behavior heterogeneities, unstable asphaltene content, high H2S and CO2 contents and high salinity formation brine. The complexity elements and problems for downhole sampling have made the full understanding of the reservoir behavior and consequently availability of data for further routine analysis and utilization of simulation model as the main way of data integration limited. Therefore, there is an emerging need to better understand the challenges surrounding production and enhanced oil recovery strategies in these reservoirs for an improved oil recovery decision making system. In this paper, the challenges in production, stimulation and enhanced oil recovery strategies in newly-developed complex carbonates are addressed and analyzed based on the changes to the chemical and mechanical environment. An integrated decision-making workflow based on coupled hydro-mechanical mechanisms in water-based EOR methods is discussed.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46361288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to perform a safe and comfortable lane change that includes flexible re-planning capabilities. In this paper, a novel structure for path planning and decision making part of a vehicle automatic lane change has been introduced which comprehensively considers both longitudinal and lateral dynamics of the vehicle. The presented method is able to perform re-planning even in the middle of a lane change maneuver according to new traffic condition. Inclusion of the dynamics of all involved vehicles and providing online performance are the other advantages of the proposed system. The algorithm is simulated and various scenarios are constructed to evaluate the efficiency of the system. The results show that the system has completely acceptable performance.","PeriodicalId":37801,"journal":{"name":"Applied and Computational Mechanics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45940260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the reduction of numerical effort and processed data in numerical stress analysis, the present paper is focused onto the investigation of an efficient method for the a priori detection of a structural component’s highly stressed areas. Based on the theory of stress mode superposition and the frequency domain solution of the decoupled equations of motion, an analytically consistent approach for a priori mode superposition is presented. In this context, the influence of multiaxial loading and mode normalisation is investigated.
