Infiltration is proposed as a method of active appropriation and opening in the urban space, generating prefigurative events rather than actual propositions. The project is an attempt to embody this proposition, and consists of the narrative of the NYC Subcommittee of Temporary Operations and Public Dissent (STOPD), an agency that exists non-existently. This paper navigates in the fields of urban and political theory, philosophy, activism, critical design and literary arts, to explore a social thesis (crisis of imagination), a design thesis (design as an opening process), a design proposition (infiltration-opening), and present a specific project with its supporting artifacts (narrative of STOPD). The project is evaluated through conversations with people involved in the context, as it intends to be a design stimulus to trigger imagination around government, dissent, and agency over the city. OVERVIEW The goal of this paper is to understand design as an opening process, and infiltration as a method of opening in the urban space. The project is an attempt to embody this proposition within a fictional approach, and consists of the narrative of the NYC Subcommittee of Temporary Operations and Public Dissent (STOPD). It is a design stimulus to trigger imagination around a solid institution and provide a framework for dissent. Here, I start by presenting STOPD, the site from which I explore my bigger questions. From STOPD, I retrospect to the social condition that motivated its emergence, followed by how I position design in relation to that condition. In sequence, I explain the design proposition of infiltration-opening as a framework for action, including the project brief I gave myself. Finally, I analyze its implication in a real context. NYC SUBCOMMITTEE OF TEMPORARY OPERATIONS AND PUBLIC DISSENT The NYC Subcommittee of Temporary Operations and Public Dissent (STOPD) is an agency that exists nonexistently. It is a curatorial lab infiltrated into the New York City’s Mayor’s Office. Figure 1: STOPD ́s logo. STOPD’s parent organization is the Community Affairs Unit, which is organized geographically, and there is a director for each borough of the city. Through this account we unpack and present the conceptual, technical and material explorations that guided our design process. Further, using this mode of reflective visual articulation, we contribute to interaction design research by highlighting potential possibilities and problematics for design within the emergent space of intelligent voice based interfaces. INTRODUCTION With the recent push towards intelligent voice based interfaces in everyday objects like phones (Apple 2017), speakers (Amazon 2017a; Google 2017) and even refrigerators (Cunningham 2017), the practices of interaction design need to adapt to the new space of ‘intelligent’ networked devices. Being new and relatively unexplored, designs from the mass market are largely limited to interface explorations or control and query based feature designs. However, to extend our understanding of the possibilities and problematics latent within this space, we argue that there is a need for more exploratory and speculative engagement with it removed from the constraints of the mass market. In this paper, we present the process and outcome from such an exploratory and speculative (Auger 2013) research through design (Zimmerman and Forlizzi 2014) project – ‘Hearsay’. Hearsay is an ‘always-on’ and ‘always conversing’ voice activated lamp that Figure 1: Intelligent Voice based Interfaces in mass media. generates quirky and whimsical rather than efficient and functional responses while incorporating transparency rather than obscurity in its form and design (Figure 2). Our intent behind unpacking the design process, speculative explorations and outcome is twofold. By sharing a rich visual account of our exploratory process and its outcome, we wish to highlight the relatively unexplored possibilities of interaction within this space along with specific issues and problematics present within it. Further, we intend to extend the understanding of the complex and often obscured (Knutsen 2014) ‘intelligent’ technologies from a design perspective by discussing and unpacking the algorithms and systems that power Hearsay. The result of this particular intersection of theory and practice is called Bitter & Sweet , a Mixed Reality design prototype using cultural heritage material. Postcolonial and decolonial strategies informed both analytic and practical phases of the design process. A further contribution to the design field is the reminder that design interventions in the current political and economic climate are frequently bi-directional: designers may enact, but simultaneously external events intervene in design processes. Bitter & Sweet reveals intersecting layers of power and control when design processes deal with sensitive cultural topics.","PeriodicalId":377953,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2017: Design and Power","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117213137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, it can provide new opportunities to the local community she is part of. The study presents case studies from the field of felting in Turkey, a rooted craft that has been transforming in the last two decades from design and product range views. With this study, we aim to understand the field of felting in Turkey and the role of design in the transitioning of felting. First, we present the general situation based on the interviews that we conducted with eight craftspeople. After that, we group their practices into three main approaches, namely artistic, design, or conventional craft, according to their way of idea generation, by following Ihatsu’s (1998: 170) diagram for craft perspectives. Finally, we present in detail one craftsperson from each of the three approaches. Based on these findings, we argue that craftspeople who use design are more empowered: they can create their own craft identities, sustain their practice, and build productive relationships with the local community. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: craft, felting, design, empowerment.","PeriodicalId":377953,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2017: Design and Power","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122925521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The course was designed to extend the learning opportunities for tackling societal challenges through the design curriculum as well as to overcome the still common divide between theoretical and studio courses in design education. Employing an integrative and reflexive approach to learning and teaching, our intention was to blend critical understanding and practice through a participatory approach to research. Therefore, we argue for the role of active engagement with communities as a means to transform and empower students' understanding of complex social challenges. Moreover, we explore the potential of active engagement to meet the challenge of delivering a curriculum that introduces students to a range of social issues in a theoretically informed way while also equipping them with the critical facilities to apply multidisciplinary approaches within design contexts. No 7 (2017): Nordes 2017: DESIGN+POWER, ISSN 1604-9705. Oslo, www.nordes.org 2 In response to this year’s call for the development of ‘humanistic approaches in design based inquiry’, we will finally explore the potential for an integrative and reflexive approach that employs participatory research while providing students a critical, theoretical and historical foundation in the analysis of their investigations and work. SOCIAL DESIGN AND HIGHER EDUCATION The field of social design can be traced to the 1960’s with the work of Kevin Garland in the First Things First Manifesto (Shea 2016: 20). In this manifesto, it is possible to witness one of the first attempts to question the assumption that design can only be defined by its commerce-driven pursuits. Even though contemporarily we can see ways in which commerce and design for social innovation might go hand-in-hand, we can still recognise how Garland’s manifesto opened a new page for design and, more importantly, for design education. Fast-forward to 2003, Steven Heller and Véronique Vienne also proposed key reflections on socially responsible design and its impact on education which has been characterised by a greater engagement with or consideration of the end user. However, the degree to which students are guided through this is a moot point. Roy Behren’s speaks, in this volume, for example of ‘teaching as a subversive inactivity’ (Behren 2003: 213-215), describing the all too familiar activity of stepping back to allow students the opportunity to explore topics on their own. Kees Dorst’s article ‘Design Research: a revolution-waiting-to-happen’ extends the field by reflecting on the importance of a more in-depth understanding of the ‘design context’, ‘object’ and ‘designer’ (Dorst 2008: 6). Read in light of Behren’s ideas, Dorst’s call for an understanding of a specific ‘design context’, will often mean, at least from our perspective, that students have ","PeriodicalId":377953,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2017: Design and Power","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114703384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This workshop asks its participants to open up a more multivalent temporality, looking at multiple possible futures and the ideas of societies (and therefore, also the power-relationship) they might convey. It aims to nurture questioning how this might help to understand better how we, as designers, can help to envision new kind of actions to be undertaken in the present public realm, and which alternative meanings such as those of citizenship, politics and power can be conveyed by our design actions. Design actions are understood here as poetic and speculative, done with the intention of restoring power and affording agency to citizens and communities, like Bruce Sterling’s Casa Jasmina in Torino. With an approach analogous to Sterling’s use of open source to generate new possibilities in the traditional spaces and uses of ‘home,’ this workshop asks participants to reconsider – and collectively reconfigure – things and/or systems which they identify as broken or soon-to-be-abandoned under the rubric of ‘progress.’ In them (be they derelict spaces, craft techniques belittled as feminine, or rituals of birth and death), we will search for other possibilities – possibilities that can realign power in service of the public good. As Marco Navarro writes, this will entail “a process in which the displacement of pieces from their original configuration produces a new graft, releasing an unexpected form of détournement. It also manifests itself through the turnover of established rela-","PeriodicalId":377953,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2017: Design and Power","volume":"147 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133446221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
