From my interactions both with him and his present and former students, his prime focus seems to be teaching graduate students how to do quality research, an emphasis that often seems to be missing at some other institutions. This book is an honest reflection of his teaching philosophy and as such deserves the attention of those of us engaged in graduate electromagnetic instruction. One of the goals of this article is to demonstrate that recent advances in FD-TD modeling concepts and software implementation, combined with advances in computer technology, have expanded the scope, accuracy, and speed of FD-TD choice for structures that cannot be easily treated by conventional integral equation and asymptotic approaches. As a class, such structure are electrically large and have complex shapes, material compositions, apertures, and interior cavities","PeriodicalId":377321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Newsletter","volume":"318 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123469688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this concept, embedded in the comprehensive concept of general defense and approved by the federal authorities in 1983, a set of governing principles is outlined to reach the following goals in case of EMP impacts on the country: - Continuation of the government's functions - Assured existence of the population - Maintained capacity of military defense. There is no question about EMP creating damages and imposing severe limitations in many fields. However, by carefully selecting and applying protective measures - required especially for the most essential systems of public information, communications, power generation and distribution, transports etc. - the country gets a real chance to survive EMP situations. To support the concept furthermore a legal regulation has been prepared. Some important issues of the EMP concept are presented.","PeriodicalId":377321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Newsletter","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123744640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
