It is therefore unsurprising that historians have failed to discover unambiguous regional identities in the past. However, this article investigates one possible exception in a case study of a peripheral English region. Adopting concepts of narrative, discourse and rhetoric, it examines the discursive moments and rhetorical strategies of spatial identity in nineteenth-century Cornwall. Evidence of a tentative regionalism is marshalled in order to reflect on the usefulness of social scientific approaches to discourse and rhetoric for understanding a specific place identity of late nineteenth-century England. The case of Hawick suggests that this was no less true of the post-war period: as late as 1972, the attitudes of employers and workers alike were shaped by a hegemonic tradition of civic pride and deference, anchoring the town's experience of deindustrialisation in a deeply local history. Focusing on the local knitwear workers' strike of that year, this article explores how civic identity and traditions of community cohesion shaped the town's experience of globalisation and economic decline, arguing that this moment of crisis should be read as a renegotiation of traditional norms, rather than their wholesale replacement. Drawing on detail in more than three hundred and seventy Huntingdonshire probate inventories, it considers bedcover ownership in the county of Huntingdonshire over the long eighteenth century and whether the use of one household commodity changed in the period. At enclosure, many clergy exchanged their right to take tithe for a portion of the newly enclosed land in the parish. The article argues that while the clergy made financial gains from this, more important was the removal of a recurrent source of dissension with parishioners.
