In this paper, we present CAMidO, a context-aware middleware based on an ontology meta-model. CAMidO, enables designers to create component-based context-aware applications. It provides an ontology meta-model for context description. The described information are used by the middleware to automatically adapt the application to relevant context-changes. Context-awareness is managed by component containers through nonfunctional properties. CAMidO manages all tasks related to context collection and application adaptation according to application designer description. Thus, it relieves application developers from programming these painful tasks","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130652591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We exploit the capabilities offered by mobile agents to query and invoke semantically enriched Web services without the need for simultaneous, online presence of the service requestor. Such service setting is ideal for wireless/mobile computing, where user terminals are not necessarily online during their entire session. To improve the capabilities of service registries met in the Web services reference architecture, we exploit the advantages of the semantic Web framework. Specifically, we use enhanced registries enriched with semantic information that provide semantic matching to service queries and published service descriptions","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127294110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A plethora of routing algorithms have been proposed to support path discovery into this class of networks, ranging from broadcasting/flooding approaches to global positioning systems (GPS). W-Grid is a novel infrastructure whose self-organizing routing and localization services enable message routing and data management without reliance on flooding/broadcasting operations or GPS. The resulting ad-hoc network does not suffer from the dead-end problem, which occurs in geographic-based routing when a node is unable to locate a neighbor closer to the destination than itself. As an example of data management we present a location service that allows a device to send messages to any another node without knowing its position. Extensive performance analysis and experiments have been conducted, and the results compared to GPSR, which is considered to be the most efficient solution not using broadcast operations but exploiting nodes' position. Analyses show that the difference between the performance of our approach and GPSR is minimal and therefore very interesting, since no GPS is used","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131396318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, since different communication technologies own different characteristics, during a vertical handoff, a well-behaved mobility management system should adapt an ongoing connection to different communication systems. In this paper, we also propose a handoff-aware TCP adaptation scheme, called CWND-restore. To verify the feasibility of our approach, we implement a prototype system on Linux. The experimental results show that our mobility management scheme can work under various mobility cases. Furthermore, our proposed CWND-restore scheme can offer higher TCP throughput during a vertical handoff. Users are offered unobtrusive services that require minimal attention. In this paper the Awareness and Notification Service (ANS) is presented that enables to rapidly build applications that inform users about their environment. Additionally, the service offers notifications tailored to the user's preferences and current context. ANS takes a rule based approach based on the event-condition-action pattern. Users specify when and what should be notified to them by using a convenient ANS rule language. This flexible mechanism allows to rapidly develop applications that provide context-aware notifications without the need to write programming code to activate rules, nor to implement personalized notifications","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133505742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Special challenges arise, when data are gathered using networked devices which have constrained resources. Examples for such systems are sensor networks where motes can use their processing capability to reduce communication and save energy. Yet, it is still an open research issue how stream queries can optimally be processed in such networks. In this paper we address the problem of mapping stream queries to heterogeneous device-networks. We present a metric for handling the trade-off between quality of service (QoS) and energy consumption. This includes a model which describes how query operators and their hosting devices affect energy consumption and QoS. Based on the model we have developed an algorithm that optimizes mappings and the mapped query plans for a given network. We also discuss results calculated by a prototype that uses our metric","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132866805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
