We describe the challenges and intricacies in collecting and disseminating relevant user context data for the purpose of complex decision-making in enterprise communications applications. We show that the continuous and user-transparent collection of context elements such as user presence and activity enables certain simple decisions in communications applications while other decisions may depend on additional, communication task-specific user context details. These details can be acquired by applications as needed through what we call dialogs in which users explicitly interact with communications applications. The rendering and processing of such dialogs is predicated on our notions of device context and dialog presence. We present the architecture and implementation of our client-side system Argus that addresses the context gathering and propagation challenges. We show how Argus, in conjunction with pervasive, context-aware enterprise communications applications, can accelerate and improve decision-making in an enterprise with a high level of convenience for users when establishing communications in response to enterprise events","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133798907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an innovative approach to developing and supporting multiagent systems at run-time. Multiagent systems (MASs) can and should be generated dynamically based on high-level user specifications which are transformed into a mission. Dynamically generating agents could also be offered as a pervasive service. Heterogeneity of MASs refers to diverse functionality and constituency of the system which include mobile as well as host associated software agents. This paper proposes and demonstrates on-demand and just-in-time agent generation approach which is combined with run-time support for MASs. Run-time support is based on mission cost-efficiency and objectives which enable termination, generation, injection and replacement of software agents as the mission evolves. We present the formal underpinning of our approach and describe the prototype tool - called eHermes, which has been implemented using specific agent platforms. Lessons and results of testing eHermes are reported and analyzed","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123182027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a new adaptive pursuer collaboration method with the support of wireless sensor networks. We focus on two different evader motions, random movement and active escaping, and develop a moving pattern recognition algorithm based on information obtained by the sensor network. We compare two pursuing strategies, greedy vs. collaboration, and derive their expected capturing times for the two evader moving patterns. By recognizing the evader moving patterns and selecting appropriate pursuing strategies, the new collaboration method is more adaptive, robust, and reduces the capturing time significantly in situations where the number of pursuers is small and the operating field is large","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126058384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a service emergence model for the implementation of pervasive computing applications is presented. In this model, ad hoc or composite services are represented by an organization or group of autonomous agents. Agents establish relationships based on affinities. Affinity corresponds to the adequacy with which two services could bind to create a composed service or to point out a similar service. These affinities are adjusted or reinforced by user satisfaction regarding the provided service and dynamic network condition changes. Simulations of this proposed service emergence model with NS2 are also presented","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129765044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices can be connected in a P2P network, thus enabling sharing of resources (which can be both files and services) with other users participating in the network. An important challenge is to enable capabilities for finding relevant resources stored at other devices. In this paper, we present an approach to improve P2P search that is particularly suitable for connections with limited bandwidth, as in the case of portable devices. The contents of a peer are represented by taxonomy terms, and remote peers maintain a taxonomy overview instead of detailed indexing information of remote peers' contents. We show through simulations that our approach, while achieving comparable recall compared to basic flooding, significantly reduces 1) the number of messages needed for performing a query and 2) the number of peers that have to be contacted during the query","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117162739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For improving the quality of service, researchers have concentrated on the notion of mobility as a means to change the network topology. Considering each node as an intelligent agent, and using the concepts of the theory of auctions, this paper introduces a novel game theoretical approach to the sensor management problem. One of the most important features of the context is the position of the users and the devices. In this paper, we describe a method to determine the position of a WiFi enabled device. The prediction is based on the signal strength of the available access points. The prediction model is built from a database containing the signal strength measured in some known locations. One of the most critical is determining the authenticity of the parties wishing to communicate. An existing method of enabling authenticated key agreement involves using a two-dimensional visual code system with digital camera enabled devices as a way of demonstratively identifying entities. This paper seeks to extend that solution by colorizing the code system, thereby extending the amount of data which can be carried by a visual tag, and thus reducing the necessary size of such tags. This create images more easily recognized by the devices establishing secure communication in wireless pervasive computing environments. A detailed explanation of an implementation of this method is presented, along with performance evaluation and analysis","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122585015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most challenging objectives to be achieved in pervasive computing environments is to assist users in realizing tasks anytime, anywhere, on the fly, by composing functionalities provided by the networked services of the pervasive computing environment. Towards this goal, we present COCOA, a conversation-based service composition middleware support for the dynamic composition of networked services in pervasive computing environments. Both networked services of the pervasive computing environment and user tasks are modeled as conversations using OWL-S. The distinctive feature of COCOA is then, the ability of integrating on the fly the conversations of networked services to realize the conversation of the user task. Thereby, COCOA allows the dynamic realization of user tasks according to the specifics of the pervasive computing environment in terms of available services and by enforcing valid service consumption","PeriodicalId":377064,"journal":{"name":"2006 ACS/IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Services","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131556361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
