We have developed a media tester with concurrent multi-functional testing. Testing results using specially fabricated sample for missing pulse and optical surface analyzer measurement were compared. The former was found superior in detection sensitivity and resolution, and shown to be useful also for indirect detection of media surface physical variations. However the missing pulse approach needs to be correlated with other concurrent tests such as Laser Doppler Vibrometry and Acoustic Emission, so that spurious results can be eliminated. Such concurrent testing on a single tester is important towards providing an “accurate picture” of the tested media surface and condition.","PeriodicalId":376463,"journal":{"name":"2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130808985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A hybrid continuum-DSMC model based on the Schwarz Alternating method is employed to couple the rarefied flow in the HDI region which is modeled by the DSMC method to the continuum flow outside the slider modeled by Navier-Stokes equation. Modeling of particle-laden flow in the HDI gap is also described in this work. We show that the slider's flying behavior undergoes through three distinct regimes as the fly height is decreased via thermal fly height control: stable flying at clearance, unstable flying or bouncing contact following the onset of touch-down, and stable sliding in the deep interference state. A minimum head-medium spacing and maximum recording performance are achieved in the deep interference state as a result of the lubricant being squeezed out of the head-disk contact.","PeriodicalId":376463,"journal":{"name":"2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130487327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flying height of the HDD spindle system is determined by using the static analysis of the FDBs, and the stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated by using the dynamic analysis of the FDBs. Free vibration characteristics and shock response of the HDD spindle system are analyzed by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. Experimental modal test is also performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. This research shows that the stiffness coefficients of journal bearing mostly affect the rocking frequencies because their magnitudes are within the range of the stiffness of supporting structure. It also shows that the damping coefficients of thrust bearing mostly affect the axial frequency because the stiffness of thrust bearing is much smaller that that of supporting structure.","PeriodicalId":376463,"journal":{"name":"2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126010821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
