The study employed the descriptive survey design. The design was particularly useful as the researchers sought to explore patterns or trends of its use in education. The study sample comprised parents, students and teachers who voluntarily participated in the study, reflecting a range of viewpoints from Tanzanian school communities. The study involved 125 participants from four schools. Data were acquired through a combination of telephone interviews, online group discussions and an online questionnaire, providing a comprehensive understanding of the participants' experiences and opinions on the use of the platform during the pandemic. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were applied to the quantitative data, whereas qualitative data analysis employed the thematic approach. The results indicate that WhatsApp is an effective classroom-learning platform, facilitating connectivity among students, parents and teachers during the pandemic. The study highlights benefits like improved parental involvement, enhanced student inquiry skills and subject mastery. The study recommends integrating WhatsApp into the curriculum and, during teaching, combining it with other digital tools for comprehensive student-directed learning.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":" 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140999972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used the qualitative approach through case study design. A sample of 30 participants was adopted including 10 from the College of Business Education, six from Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, six from Medical Store Department and eight from Tanzania Buildings Agency. The researchers used in-depth interviews and documentary reviews as sources of data. The interview lasted between 15 and 30 minutes to capture opinions, beliefs and attitudes about constraints that personal secretaries faced in executing their daily operations. The analysis involved the content analysis approach. The study concludes that personal secretaries faced numerous challenges, which constrain their job. Such challenges include communication constraints, records and documentation, customer related constraints and guidance and counselling constraints face personal and administrative secretaries. These constraints hindered them to perform their duties better, hence leading to negative image of their organizations. Based on the conclusions, employers need to set a portion of budget in their offices for secretaries to attend both on-the-job and off-the-job training to refresh their soft skills on both communication and emerging technologies. Administrators need to motivate and respect the work of personal and administrative secretaries by providing good office spaces and modern equipment. They also need to refresh their guidance and counselling capacities by conducting regular seminars and workshops, which will sharpen their performance and bring glory to respective institutions.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127084432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It sought to establish whether adverse childhood experience, psychological distress and life satisfaction have any impact on marital satisfaction. The study adopted the predictive correlational design, using 893 married men and women as respondents to a questionnaire. Data was analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that adverse childhood experiences did not affect marital satisfaction. While psychological distress negatively affected the marital satisfaction, life satisfaction enhanced the marital satisfaction. The study recommended that effort be directed at keeping the level of psychological distress low in marriages by ensuring that any action or activity that can potentially trigger psychological distress is eliminated. Efforts geared toward enhancing life satisfaction should be encouraged among married couples due to the potential positive influence of such on marital satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126012874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Africa’s largely youthful population will eventually age, with most people exiting the workforce in time. However, much of the world’s research on retirement planning is focused more on the developed world contexts. This scoping review was done to ascertain the vigor and breadth of research on retirement planning in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2020. Using Boolean combinations of keywords, the researchers accessed 1546 documents from Google Scholar. After screening, 53 articles were reviewed. It was found that publications about Nigeria dominated the literature; most studies in the sub-region are quantitative and, most studies focused on predictors of retirement planning, preparedness and satisfaction. Retirement planning in Africa is generally under-researched. The authors made suggestions for future studies.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130701865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches in collection and analysis of data. The study revealed that regular reporting, clear goals and proper use of funds were significant indicators of accountability that predict service delivery while learning from mistakes, treasury rules and regulations, promptness, misconduct and wrongdoing were not significant predictors of service delivery. Therefore, it is recommended that the President's Office-Regional Administration and Local Government, Regional Secretariats and Local Government Authorities should emphasize goal-setting and proper use of funds, involve all actors in setting goals and have more than one official to authorize payments. Establishing committees responsible for monitoring local government authorities' activities is also recommended, along with implementing client service charters to ensure accountability is well observed in LGAs.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129873617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One function of literature is to highlight such practices and invite the society to reflect and change for the better. Henry Ole Kulet’s Blossoms of the Savannah is a Kenyan novel approved for study in secondary schools in Kenya and was the basis through which this paper was done. The study adopted a comparative research design. The novel was selected purposively to examine how it interrogates retrogressive socio-cultural practices in the Maasai culture. Data was collected using a close reading of the text and was subjected to content analysis. The study found that four major retrogressive socio-cultural practices are highlighted in the novel, namely female genital mutilation, polygamy, patriarchy along with male chauvinism and early or planned marriages. These practices deprive women of their dignity and right to make decisions as individuals. They work by exerting control over women’s bodies and limiting their decision-making options within the social spaces. Some women have resigned to the status quo, having been socialized and oppressed for a long time. However, others, due to their young age and exposure to western formal education, assert strive to break free from these retrogressive practices. Ole Kulet envisions the possibility of women breaking free from these practices and finding a chance to improve their lives through education. There is need to sensitize women, men, children and communities on the detrimental effects of retrogressive cultural practices, especially FGM, and on the value of girl-child education.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124149657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employed a qualitative single case study design. From the population of 130 University of Livingstonia pre-service teachers, 10 were purposefully sampled because they took English as their major or minor teaching subject. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and document analysis of English textbooks, lesson plans and schemes of work. After collection, data was stored in a flash disk and was served in Google drive for safety in case of loss. Analysis of the data was done thematically after sorting it into categories. Ethical principles were considered to protect participants’ privacy. The criteria of trustworthiness i.e. credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability were also ensured. Key findings show that pre-service teachers used a number of contextualization approaches such as authentic assessment, authentic materials, cooperative learning and integration of literature to teach grammar. The study recommends that teacher education institutions should effectively train pre-service teachers on how to use the strategies to teach English grammar so as to enhance meaningful learning among secondary school students.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130106613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used a convergent research design to collect both quantitative and qualitative data concurrently. The population of the study comprised of 633 postgraduate students from which the samples of 239 was drawn. Simple random sampling was used to select postgraduate students to participate in the study. The online survey was used to obtain 171 responses from 239 postgraduate students. Data from interview sessions was obtained from eight (8) heads of academic staff purposefully selected to participate in the study. Quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics while qualitative data was transcribed and subjected to content and thematic analyses using Atlasi Ti. The study establishes that postgraduate students were willing to exchange knowledge and information using social media to interact and socialize. Based on their willingness, the study revealed that social media offered various benefits to postgraduate students, including timely access to knowledge and information, collaborative learning, strengthening their knowledge base and enhancing their academic performance. Among other recommendations, the selected tertiary institutions need to formulate social media usage policies to guide postgraduate students on the use of such platforms. This includes informing them of the risks associated with the use of social media and alternative ways of avoiding such risks.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131234582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cross sectional survey design was adopted in collecting data from 204 conveniently selected respondents from the population of students who were studying at the National Institute of Transport and the University of Dar es Salaam. Data was collected by using a questionnaire whereby analysis involved both descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics revealed that academic uses of mobile phone internet are more dominant, followed by social uses and economic uses. The inferential statistics revealed that social and academic uses variables make significant unique contributions to the prediction of the dependent variable, students’ achievements with economic uses having insignificant contribution to the variable. The study recommended that given uncontrollable uses of mobile phone internet among students, some initiatives are essential as a proactive measure for enhancing students’ academic excellence and minimizing serious vulnerabilities associated with irresponsible internet usage.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"45 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114074415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The population comprised of 103 Clothing and Textiles National Diploma students and 27 lecturers from three polytechnics. Stratified sampling was used to select 32 ND students and 6 lecturers who participated in the study. The study used a questionnaire, FGD and interviews as sources of data. Data was analyzed through the thematic approach. The study established that the component of Quality Control and Assurance contained very important aspects of quality management issues. The quality control component had a positive impact on the quality of products produced in the polytechnic CTPUs as it equipped participants with skills and competences required to produce high quality products that satisfy customers. One of recommendations is that the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation Science and Technology through the Higher Education Examination Council should reconsider the course structure and placement of Quality Control and Assurance component in the Clothing and Textile curriculum. The fundamentals of quality control in garment industry should be taught at National Certificate level as it can be a terminal course for those who do not wish to advance to National Diploma level.","PeriodicalId":375627,"journal":{"name":"May to June 2023","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127394758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
