Milk production and processing is increasing continuously, with cheese making being the most abundant dairy product. Thinking that surplus CW’s biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) varies from 35.000 to 55.000 mg O2/L and the total worldwide production is estimated at about 180 to 190 million tons/year, its disposal in the environment, could arise several environmental issues. So, valorization of cheese whey to functional value-added products of high industrial interest and nutritional value (such as proteins, oligosaccharides and carotenoids employing either chemical or bio-catalyzed processes), could possibly constitute a novel waste management option while promoting circular economy principles. The data used are primary data obtained directly from farmers. The sample size used was 90 farmers. Sampling using simple random sampling method. The data analysis used the SEM Partial Least Square structural model. The results of the analysis show that the description of internal factors, external factors of farmers and the adoption of farming technology are in the medium category. The productivity and farming sustainability factors are in a low category. The determinant factor that greatly influences the productivity and sustainability of rice farming is farm income. Farm productivity and sustainability are significantly influenced by farmers 'access to credit, farmers' access to technology, and access to input procurement. The main determinant of productivity is the use of production inputs. The sustainability of farming is mainly determined by economic aspects, especially income. Models for increasing productivity and agricultural sustainability must pay attention to efforts to improve farmers' access to credit, access to technology and access to input procurement. Efforts are needed to handle the input output price for rice so that it can increase farmers' income.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134354663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Allotey","doi":"10.22161/ijhaf.3.5.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22161/ijhaf.3.5.5","url":null,"abstract":"Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) is one of the vegetable fruit crops commonly cultivated around the globe and used mostly as a flavour in cuisines. Cover cropping is a form of sustainable agriculture which helps to maintain soil fertility and reduces the need and the amount of inorganic fertilizer and thus helps the farmer to increase profitability. The objective of this study was to find the effect of the cover crops on growth and yield of tomato. In this experiment legume cover crops were grown in five treatment plots and these were Bare soil, inorganic fertilizer (NPK 15:15:15), Vigna unguiculata (Cowpea), Mucuna pruriens (Mucuna) and Canavalia ensiformis (Canavalia) in 3 blocks. The results showed that tomato plants grown on Canavalia ensiformis plots showed earlier flowering and fruiting than the other treatments. It also showed significantly higher yield than the other treatments (P= 0.006). The study shows that cover crops especially Canavalia ensiformis could be considered as part any farming system that wants to use sustainable farming to improve soil nutrients and reduce cost of farming. Keywords— Tomato, crop, conventional agricultural practices. I. BACKGROUND The use of cover cropping as a sustainable agriculture practice is not commonly practised in Ghana. Most farmers use conventional agricultural practices which include the use of inorganic fertilizer in quite high quantities, which could lead to ground water pollution. Vegetable fruits like garden eggs and tomato are cultivated by quite a high number of youth in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Vegetable production is the main source of income for some of these young farmers. This has helped quite a number of these farmers to be successful. Most of the vegetable products are sold in large towns and cities by middle men who buy at the farm gate. The use of well-managed sustainable agriculture practices could lead to high yield and environmental benefits. The use of cover crops could be for various reasons including recycling nutrients, reduced leaching of nutrients, weed control and improved soil and air quality (Hoorman, 2009). Legume cover crops have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms in the soil by plants. Cover crops recycle nutrients and reduce the use of inorganic fertilizer. Among the commonly used legume cover crops are Canavalia spp., Crotalaria sp., cowpea, beans, groundnut, Mucuna sp. and Soybean. Legumes have been found to enhance soil fertility and increase crop yields (Abayomi et al., 2001). In a similar work, Kang (1992) found that legumes could have multiple uses including use as cover crops, live mulch or food crops. On the African continent, the use of Mucuna spp. as cover crop has received some attention. Ile et al., (1996) found that growing of Mucuna pruriens as a cover crop could reduce the need to apply synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. Ngome et al., (2011) found that growing maize and Mucuna pruriens together led to increase of maize yield","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121574518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research method community interview is applied, the interviewees are those who directly use, exploit, trade and the village heads, healers, mothers, interviewed 80 households in total. The data processing method calculates the percentage based on the answer sheet and notebook. The results show that, 100% of the surveyed households know, can recognize and use C. javanica. This is a fairly popular product locally, but now the quantity is not much. The community clearly describes the growing place, morphology, season, knows how to use the product for health care and trade; 100% harvesting activities are carried out from the wild, breeding activities have not been carried out, only 6.25% of households have tried sowing seeds and only 2.5% of households have tried to plant some C. javanica around the house; 87.5% of mining households are to sell for income; 86.25% of interviewed households want to learn more experience in propagation and planting but only 75% of them are willing to plant if the output market is stable. Experience in commercializing the product is not available, the community only brings the harvested products to the local market or shops to resell. The results from this study show that the local community has a good source of knowledge about C. javanica, but it has not been exploited and applied to conservation and sustainable development of the species. Therefore, this is an issue that needs attention and support, combining both local and technical knowledge, both in terms of the output market so that C. javanica becomes a strength in supporting household economic stability.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123916101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prevalence of obesity and overweight was determined among 732 affluent adolescent girls of Bengaluru. The results indicated that 21.17% of the girls were overweight and 13.38% were obese. Information regarding knowledge, attitude and dietary & lifestyle practices of 98 obese and 155 overweight adolescent girls was collected using a structured questionnaire. It was seen that although 49% of the adolescent girls had fair knowledge, and all the subjects had positive attitudes towards nutrition and healthy lifestyle, a negative correlation was seen between Knowledge and Practice; and Attitude and Practice. Faulty dietary practices such as irregular meal pattern, frequent consumption of energy dense, high calorie food and drinks and physical inactivity were seen to be the main causes of obesity and overweight in the girls. It was also seen that the intake of protein and fat was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the RDA for obese and overweight adolescents.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128708610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 360 respondents were sampled using multi-stage sampling procedure. The study revealed among others that the majority of the respondents were male (60.3%), the mean age of the respondents was 44years. The majority of the respondents (80.0%) were married, 68.1% of the respondents had one form of education or the other. The majority of the respondents have manageable household size of five (5) persons that can assist on the farm. The result showed that Radio and fellow farmers were the major sources of information available to the farmers on ATA programme. Some of the positive perception towards ATA programme are; ATA programme has increased the quantity of my farm product ( =3.7), quality of their product was positively affected ( =3.5) and the programme served as a sure source of good planting materials for them ( =3.5). The result showed that household size, year of farming experience and farm size had a positive and significant effect on rice production in the study areas. This implies that an increase in the farmers’ family will lead to increase in the labour available to cultivate the land and this shows the relationship between increase in farm size and household size. This also implies that there will be meaningful contribution to food security in the country when farming experience, farm size and household size increase at the same pace.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129481511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
