Besides, the bee colony health is a good indicator of the quality of the environment and it is strongly affected by many aspects such as beekeepers' management practices, policies adopted for cropping and land use. However, the climate change, the intensive agriculture, pesticides, biodiversity loss, Varroa mites and pollution are the leading cause of bees death world wide. The role of beekeepers is of extremely importance to mitigate this damage. Apiaries are usually located in remote environment an require frequent visit by the beekeepers. Indeed, the beekeeping sector lacks of suitable tools for risk assessment and decision making that can be used by stakeholders. Smart monitoring systems assessing the health of the colony and the honey production would be beneficial for such community. In this work, we present a prototype of an embedded multisensor system for beehive monitoring with the aim of providing a simple solution to beekeepers. Indeed, the proposed system do not require modification of the beehive and it is compact enough to be simply inserted in the brood box. It measures the vital parameters of the beehive, such as temperature, weight, humidity and CO2 concentration. It exploits the low power communication protocol LoRaWAN for the data transmission. The collected data are made available to the beekeeper through a web application. We show the effectiveness of such compact, non-invasive embedded system with its installation in an apiary.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134095586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yearly sediment loads were quantified in two river basins of the Apulia region, the Carapelle (506 km2) and the Celone river basin (72 km2), For the Carapelle river basin, streamflow and suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) were monitored from 2007 to 2011 with an infrared optical probe and suspended sediment load at the yearly basis was quantified by integration of instantaneous flux. For the Celone river, continuous measurements of streamflow and discrete measurements of SSC taken, from 2010 to 2011, in all hydrological conditions (high, normal and low flow) were used to develop sediment rating curves. In particular, different sediment rating curves were developed for the entire dataset and three subsets of data identified based on the hydrological conditions and loads were computed with and without a back-transformation correction factor. At the Celone river gauge, annual specific sediment load ranged from 2.4 t ha−1 yr−1to 6.06 t ha−1 yr−1. At the Carapelle river gauge, the annual specific sediment load ranged from 0.9 t ha−1yr−1to 7.45 t ha−1 yr−1. The results of the present study show that the hydrological regime is the key factor in sediment transport in the Celone and Carapelle basins and that the duration of the sampled period, and its characteristics (wet or dry) may have a great impact on sediment loads.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129377313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the current study, we propose a system based on the DHT22 sensor and the Arduino-Uno board for gathering data on air temperature and relative humidity to calculate water extraction during cocoon drying operations through the analysis of air absolute humidity. The systems underwent preliminary testing on a sample of Bombyx mori L. silk cocoons. In winegrowing, the control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) requires several PPP applications. This study aimed to analyze the spatial dependence of symptoms of downy mildew on the grapevine. The severity of symptoms was evaluated by visual quantification on 32 points during four surveys in a 1.1-hectare block. First, the McKinney Index measured the severity; then, the georeferenced values were used for a geostatistical analysis (experimental variogram and kriging interpolation). According to the results, the spatial dependence of the number of leaves was strong (Nugget effect = 7.5%) and increased during the growing season. Similarly, the spatial dependence of the number of bunches was strong (Nugget effect = 6.3%) without strong variation during the growing season. On the other hand, symptoms' spatial dependence was weak at the beginning of the growing season (Nugget effect= 77%), while it was strong in the middle of the growing season (Nugget effect = 7.8%). The analysis of covariates proved that the effect of elevation and vines' vigor on downy mildew was not significant. These results suggest that primary infection was slightly spatial dependent, while secondary infection of downy mildew was strongly spatial dependent.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126049245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, having the possibility to collect data about the weight of a large number of fruits in the orchard gives the possibility to increase the reliability of the yield estimation. Over recent years, mathematical models able to convert the fruit size into fruit weight were evaluated as effective. Since then, manual data collection with calipers and automated/continuous fruit gauges were tested to collect fruit size data to perform yield predictions. Their main drawbacks are respectively the need for human-labour, repetitiveness, being time-requiring and the limited sample varying from 20 to 200 fruits per hectare. This research is trying to discover and deepen the use of AI in agriculture for doing a step further: sizing fruits after their detection with a YOLOv5 Neural network algorithm. To reach this goal, a system which takes as a input RGB-D depth-camera's color images and 16 bit depth maps was developed. After applying YOLOv5 detection, two different methodologies (by mean of squared bounding boxes and circular shapes) to extract from the depth map the distance data needed to size the target object were tested. Results from a preliminary data-set showed that the system could be a potential solution to increase the sample dimension and perform yield prediction. The main drawbacks of the developed vision-system are related to the errors in sizing the objects, which are ranging from an underestimation of about 9 mm to an overestimation of 24 mm. From the initial results was possible to identify the squared-bbox-mediated sizing process as a better pathway rather than the one performed with circular-bboxes, since the RMSE is always smaller with values of 7–9 mm","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125168402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to assess 03 risk to sugarcane plants and understand the physiological responses and the mechanisms involved in O<inf>3</inf> detoxification to verify whether such mechanisms are genotype-dependent. Two sugarcane genotypes (IACSP94-2094 and IACSP95-5000) were subjected to a 90-day Free-Air Controlled Experiment (FACE) exposure at three levels of O<inf>3</inf> concentrations. Ozone exposure caused a negative impact on sugarcane growth, and its sensitivity may be related to its high gsto (~535 mmol H<inf>2</inf>O m<sup>−2</sup> s<sup>−1</sup>), The flux-based index (PODy) performed well in estimating the O<inf>3</inf> effect on biomass losses. We recommend a y threshold of 2 nmol m<sup>−2</sup> s<sup>−1</sup> to incorporate O<inf>3</inf> effects on sugarcane and, in order not to exceed 4% reduction in the above-ground biomass, we recommend the critical levels of 1.09 and 1.04 mmol m-<sup>2</sup> POD2 of IACSP95-5000 and IACSP94-2094, respectively. Photosynthesis of IACSP95-5000 was more sensitive to elevated O<inf>3</inf> as compared to IACSP942094. However, sugarcane plants have an effective antioxidant system to avoid O<inf>3</inf>-induced damage, in both genotypes, increases in ascorbate peroxidase activity was directly related to decreases in leaf H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf> concentration. In IACSP94-2094, nevertheless, catalase pathway was also stimulated for detoxifying H<inf>2</inf>O<inf>2</inf>. We concluded that sugarcane sensitivity to 03 is genotype-dependent and biomass loss due to 03 would correspond to thousand tons of lost yield per year worldwide.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"15 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120822867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, using digital technologies can reduce costs and optimize the resources used. However, the stable operation of these technologies relies on widespread and uninterrupted access to the Internet in plant and digestate distribution areas. In this research, 4G internet connection coverage was analyzed in Italian AD plants and agricultural areas within a 15-km radius, where digestate can be returned. The results were compared for different regions in Italy to identify possible critical areas for the digitization of bioenergy production processes. Preliminary results show that the sites where the AD plants are located are generally covered with a stable 4G internet connection, allowing the application of process automation technologies. However, in numerous cases, digestate distribution areas, especially in southern Italy, highlight a weak connection, hindering smart digestate adoption. These results should be considered to implement energy-saving policies and digital transition in the sector.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122695000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High resolution spatio-temporal monitoring requires the production of highly accurate data, which can only be ensured when the TIR sensors are well calibrated. This technique is called cosmic-ray neutron sensing and uses neutron counters to assess the water content in a field. Over the last year, the authors proposed an innovative neutron spectrometer to perform these measurements, which is called WEDDING-PIE (Wide Energy Detector for Direct Investigation of Neutron spectrum at Ground level for Precise moIsture Evaluation), abbreviated as W-PIE. Counters which are conventionally used can only give information on the intensity of the cosmic neutron flux, whereas a neutron spectrometer can calculate both the intensity and the neutron energy distribution. In this paper, the potential of the W-PIE for soil moisture measurements is de-scribed and the main advantages of using a neutron spectrometer over conventional neutron counters are illustrated. In conclusion, preliminary results of the measuring campaign in Parco Nord, Milan, are provided.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121237028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
