Unfortunately, game writing requires a different set of skills than game design. Moreover, there is a shortage of interactive tools devoted to help non-writers to (learn how to) create compelling storylines for interactive media like video games. Our goal has been to design, implement and test a tool embedded into a game engine to help non-writers to create stories (for video games). Our solution, designed with the help of domain-experts, does not generate contents, but interactively helps the user to produce a solid narrative structure for a story, to avoid falling into banality or creating boring, repetitive tales.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127231557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our study, we adopted eGLU, a user-centered protocol including simplified usability tests, which is specific for finding critical issues in websites and web applications. Although the user interface had been carefully internally tested prior to our study, by involving just few users we were able to individuate a significant number of critical usability issues we had not previously identified. This indicates that formative user--based usability studies are an essential prerequisite for the realization of cognitive rehabilitation tools and, more in general, of interactive software medical devices, where it is fundamental that the clinical effectiveness of the system is not hampered by hidden usability issues.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124313010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to be optimal, remote monitoring services and health-related interventions should be strongly personalised to specific individuals' requirements, preferences, abilities and motivations, which can vary among the elderly and even dynamically evolve over time for the same person, depending on changing user needs and conditions associated with the current context of use. In this paper we present how a platform for the development of context-dependent applications by non-technical users has been customized for remotely monitoring and assisting elderly people at home. The platform has been integrated with an application for remotely assisting elderly people at home. The user editable personalisation features are specified by using trigger-action rules. The way to personalise applications through the platform has been tested with some elderly people and informal caregivers, and the feedback they reported in the test was encouraging.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133114948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, several studies show that when patients are responsible for treatment administration, poor adherence is prevalent. Hence, it is necessary to devise effective methods to remotely assess medication compliance and support self-administration of drugs. Existing methods include electronic reminders such as short message service reminders and pill reminder apps. Although those tools may help increasing adherence, they interfere with the normal routine of patients by providing unnecessary reminders, or providing the reminder at an unfortunate time. More sophisticated solutions include the use of smart packaging and ingestible sensors to quantify and monitor drug intake. While those solutions do not interfere with normal routines, currently they are restricted to patients involved in a few clinical studies. In this paper, we introduce a novel system to support self-administration of drugs without interfering with the patient's routines. The system is based on a combination of cheap sensors and a smartphone. Tiny Bluetooth low energy sensors attached to medicine boxes communicate motion data to an app running on the patient's smartphone. Thanks to a machine learning algorithm, the app detects intake events, and reminds the user only when needed. Active learning is used to improve recognition rates thanks to the user's feedback. Preliminary experiments with a dataset acquired from volunteers show that the algorithm can detect most intake events with a few false positives. At the time of writing, we have developed a working prototype of the system, and we are beginning an experimental evaluation with a group of patients of an Italian hospital.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128173736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since HoloLens' launch in March 2016, some mixed-reality applications of this technology have been announced or showcased, addressing different fields, including education, data visualization, tourism, entertainment, and professional training e.g., in medicine, architecture, manufacturing, and engineering. Still, a limited number of reported research provide examples of user experience designs and evaluations for applications using HoloLens. We are interested in the use of HoloLens as therapeutic tool for people with the Alzheimer's Disease. The paper describes a set of therapeutic activities that have been designed in cooperation with neurologists and aim at stimulating short term memory and spatial memory in this target group. We also report a preliminary study of the usability of these activities among the elderly subjects.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128856848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the same way, people are constantly connected between them using mobile devices. Through the IoT era we are going to a fully connected world and it influences the field of Education too. Due to the availability of smartphones, bluetooth beacons and other network devices that enhance the interaction in the classroom, we try to lower the gap between the activities that take place in the physical and in the digital world, taking advantage from implicit inputs and tracking the creation of groups. In this paper, we describe a proof of concept in a blended learning environment setting by detailing both the hardware setup and the general prototype architecture design thus presenting the implemented features and the future work.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"272 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122760972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various Web tools have demonstrated that context plays an important role in memorizing cues for retrieval. However, it is not yet sufficiently explored, which type of context is useful for which situations. We carried out a three-stage study to observe how users approach context in bookmarking and retrieval. First, an on-line survey revealed that most users identified some types of context helpful for refinding. Further, an analysis of bookmarks created with a prototypical tool showed that users' choice of types of context depended on the personal relevance of the content. Finally, the success of retrieval depended on the accuracy and specificity of users' recall. Contextual cues seem to improve success rates when there is a gap in semantic memory. These results tentatively imply that contextual indicators should become part of both the bookmarking and retrieval process.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117093688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Italian primary schools, in particular, bring their own restraints to the integration of their design. This paper explores how to bring the design of IoT tangibles to primary-school children and their educators. It narrates a workshop experience with a primary school class. This was on purpose conducted in an environment similar to their school, without typical fablab facilities. It was linked to the curriculum of the class: it asked children to create IoT tangibles related to socio-emotional learning. The workshop organised the fabrication in stages. Initially, it used paper-based generative toolkigs, which would make everybody feel on equal footing (children and teachers alike): Tiles-like cards and a conceptualisation framework. Then it progressively moved children into programming their own IoT tangibles for socio-emotional goals. The workshop gathered mixed data, mainly qualitative. The paper ends by reflecting on them and the entire experience.","PeriodicalId":374214,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Biannual Conference on Italian SIGCHI Chapter","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122568723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
