The investigation is based on a qualitative methodology, using life history interviews, carried out in two moments. Data were collected from 20 individuals over 65 years old. Data were subject to thematic content analysis. The results point to different negative impacts of resentment on well-being and different positive impacts of forgiveness. Our results suggest that over time a set of variables influence the experience of forgiving. Subsequent studies are needed to investigate these variables and validate intervention plans focused on forgiveness among older population.","PeriodicalId":37364,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Psychology","volume":"66 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135093348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although several instruments exist to measure it, they present some difficulties that require improvement. The present study started from an instrument previously developed for Mexican population (Esparza-Del Villar et al., Journal of Interpersonal Violence , 2020) to construct a new retrospective measure of abuse: the Child Abuse Scale for Adults (EAIA, Spanish initials). We worked with a total sample of 810 individuals, consisting mainly of women (> 70%) and young adults (mean age around 23 years). We conducted both traditional (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis) and advanced (exploratory graph analysis, item response theory) procedures to obtain a short self-report measure of child abuse experiences. The EAIA evidenced a clear factor structure (CFI = .96, RSMEA = .06), as well as adequate reliability for its three subscales: sexual (ω = .91), physical (ω = .88) and emotional abuse (ω = .93). In addition, it showed partial scalar invariance between sexes. At the item level, it was observed that the items of the sexual and physical abuse subscales had greater informative capacity at high levels of maltreatment, while the items of the emotional abuse subscale showed better psychometric quality at average levels of the construct. Finally, associations were found in the expected direction between the three subscales of the EAIA and a set of psychopathological variables (depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation). In conclusion, the EAIA constitutes a promising alternative to retrospectively measure child abuse in the Mexican adult population.","PeriodicalId":37364,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Psychology","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135895149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current cross-sectional study evaluated the associations between participants’ love and relationship satisfaction across different phases of a relationship. For this propose, we recruited a sample of 1102 Brazilian participants, including 756 (68.6%) women and 346 (31.4%) men (mean age = 25.52 years, SD = 7.98), from 12 Brazilian states and the Federal District. Participants’ relationship was coded in order of bond levels: 0 - unrequited relationship, 1 - non-established relationship, 2 - dating, 3 - living together or engaged, and 4 - married. A linear regression analysis indicated that the influence of passion on relationship satisfaction is higher, and the influence of commitment is lower, in more advanced phases of one’s relationship. Multilevel regression showed the role of bond, interacting with the dimensions of love on the prediction of relationship satisfaction. The associations between types of love and relationship satisfaction differ across relationship stages. While the influence of passion and intimacy on relationship satisfaction grows across the relationships’ stages, the influence of commitment decreases. This study also suggests that type of relationship can be understood as an ordinal variable, instead of categorical.","PeriodicalId":37364,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Psychology","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136308804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
