With the methodology and a computer simulation program, all of the systematic parameters can be designed, such as, the rated power of the electric motor drive, fuel cell system, peaking power source as well as the energy capacity. An overall control strategy has also been developed. The main function of the control strategy is to properly control the power produced by the fuel cell system and the peaking power source, so as to meet the power demand, maintain the energy level of the peaking power source in its optimal region and operate the fuel cell system within its high efficiency region. In this paper, a design example has also been introduced in each section.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (Cat. The noise and vibration issues in permanent magnet motors have not been studied extensively. This paper presents a general purpose method to understand the sources of torque pulsation in permanent magnet motors. This method is based on the analysis of the traveling wave components of the radial and tangential air gap flux. These flux densities are obtained from time domain finite element solutions which are then analyzed to find the time and frequency Fourier components. The harmonic components in the cogging torque can then be attributed to specific air gap flux harmonics. A surface mounted brushless DC motor is used as a case study to analyze the effect of rotor asymmetry on torque pulsation. Several guidelines relating to the finite element modeling of the machine are given concerning grid generation and the inclusion of external circuit connections. The effect of magnet imbalance, static rotor eccentricity, dynamic eccentricity, and combined static and dynamic eccentricity are investigated. Load cases are also studied. These results are then related to the expected frequency components in the torque ripple. The authors conclude the paper with overall comments on the modeling and a discussion of the suitability of these motors for low vibration applications.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. An integer slot yoke winding and a fractional slot winding have been chosen since the crossing of phases in the winding overhang should be avoided. Transient performance on a run-up process of a given motor is analyzed by using both techniques and the effects of estimator parameter variation are studied. The measured speed is compared with the one estimated on-line, the motor inputs being acquired via a data acquisition board. The performance of the two methods are compared with confidence that overall system dynamics are unchanged, since the algorithms use the same input data.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. In the event of sensor failures, it is desirable that the induction motor system continues to operate, even if under a diminished performance capacity. This paper describes the development of a fault tolerant control system for an induction motor with automatic controller reconfiguration. The system adaptively reorganizes itself in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain the best control performance given the complement of the remaining sensors. Theoretical and experimental results are presented.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (Cat. This paper presents the design methodology for new-generation universal-motors for vacuum cleaners. The mathematical model of the universal motor is formed and a computer program based on Matlab with Simulink is developed to calculate the performance of the motor. The Magnet 5.2 finite element analysis is used for design optimisation. Performance tests are conducted on a dynamic-loading test system. A design methodology is developed in MS Visual Basic form. Finally the validity of design methodology is evaluated on theoretical and experimental performance characteristics of two motors, a conventional 20000-RPM dry-wet motor and a new 40000-RPM dry-only motor.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. In general the price of the tool is relatively low, but the failure can cause incomparably higher production cost. Over the years, a wide variety of tool condition monitoring (TCM) techniques has been developed based on sensor signals such as cutting forces, acoustic emission and vibration. In this paper, a real time monitoring technique based on multiple modeling method is presented for drilling operations which is one of the most widely used manufacturing operations. The multiple modeling method utilizes cutting forces (thrust and torque) collected during the drilling operation and classifies these forces using hidden Markov models (HMM) to determine wear status of the drill bit. Experimental results have been presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001. Our aim is to model the brake and estimate its braking power. We focused on a static model, in which the flux density distribution on the eddy current surface was calculated using finite element methods. Next, we derived a dynamic model whose eddy currents were computed by means of an analytical expression. We then performed a 2D analytical calculation, which could be compared with finite element calculations using the ANSYS(R) code, followed by a 3D analytical calculation.","PeriodicalId":373614,"journal":{"name":"IEMDC 2001.
