The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in patients after a fracture within the proximal femoral epiphysis, staying at a nursing home (NH). Methods. The study was conducted at a NH centre on 15 people after a fracture within the proximal femoral epiphysis (mean aged 76.9 ± 10.8). The CGA assessment was performed twice: before and after a 12 week stay at the centre. Physiotherapy was carried out five times a week for one hour (Monday to Friday). Results. The analysis showed a significant improvement in the Activities of daily Living scale (AdL). in the case of the physical condition of the patients, the physiotherapy led to significant improvements, predominantly in the gait and balance of the patients. Significant correlations, at the start and end of the study, were found between the AdL and Tinetti scale. Conclusions. There was a significant relationship found between the functional status and physical health of the patients undergoing physiotherapy staying at the NH. The systematic 3-month physiotherapy significantly improved the functional and physical condition of elderly patients. CGA can be a tool for evaluating the efficacy of the rehabilitation process of elderly patients staying at a NH. The results are a pilot study, but confirm that CGA can and should be routinely used in geriatric centres in Poland.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70524677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Forty participants (females) with UCS were randomly divided into two equal groups: group A (control group) and group B (experimental group). Both groups received two sessions per week for four consecutive weeks. Group A received traditional physical therapy program in form of stretching, strengthening and postural correction exercises while Group B received Pilates exercise program. Primary outcome measures were balance, spinal curvature, Craniovertebral angle (CV), and rounded shoulders while the Neck Disability Index and Visual Analogue Scale served as secondary outcome measures. Measurements were recorded before and after treatment. Results: Comparison between pre-and post-treatment test results showed that all dependent variables significantly improved for both groups ( p > 0.001). However, Pilates exercise resulted in greater improvement in terms of balance, spinal curvature, CVA, and pain ( p > 0.001). Conclusions: Pilates exercise program proved better than traditional physical therapy program in improving spinal curvature, balance, and function and reducing pain in UCS.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70525268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aim was to analyse the justification of limitations in physical therapy and activities of daily living in patients after cardiac surgery via sternotomy. Methods. A narrative review design was followed. This study is the result of analysing and comparing the data obtained through investigating sternal closure stability after sternotomy, the load on the sternum during physical therapy, activities of daily living and coughing, as well as the effectiveness of sternum external fixation. Results. Sternum closure stability after sternotomy and the force of the load on the sternum during cough are greater than when performing upper extremity movements and most of the activities of daily living. The benefits of using sternum external fixation are not marked. Mathematically, most of the presented statistical benefits of sternum external fixation were achieved owing to the large number of individuals in the samples. Therefore, it is important to analyse such statistical indicators as odds ratio, attributable risk, the number needed to treat in terms of such a ‘harmful factor’ as lack of sternum external fixation. The use of sternum external fixation should be biomechanically grounded. Conclusions. Conventional restrictions and recommendations for patients after cardiac surgery via sternotomy lack theoretical justification and research to confirm their necessity.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70520359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aim was to evaluate the test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change of the Step Test in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess the test-retest reliability of the Step Test. The minimal detectable change with 95% confidence interval (MdC95) was calculated to determine the true change. The inclusion criteria involved a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis and age of 40 years. Results. Thirty-eight participants who met the inclusion criteria were investigated. Seven were male and the mean age equalled 61.23 ± 9.31 years. Three patients had radiographic findings indicative of Kellgren-Lawrence grade ii, 10 of grade iii, and 25 of grade iV. The Step Test presented excellent test-retest reliability. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.97, standard error of the mean was 0.46, and the MdC95 was 1.27. Conclusions. The Step Test is a reliable outcome measurement for the assessment of balance in patients with knee osteoar- thritis, and it showed excellent test-retest reliability in these patients. The test may assist clinicians and researchers in evaluating balance and planning rehabilitation in patients with knee osteoarthritis.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70514740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cross-training, as a type of unilateral movement-based priming, could enhance the affected side depending on strengthening of the non-affected side. it was aimed to investigate the effect of unilateral movement-based priming on handgrip strength and fine motor developmental outcomes of the affected upper extremity in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy. Methods. overall, 32 patients participated in this study; they were randomly classified into 2 groups. Group A subjects engaged in a selected occupational therapy program based on fine motor development, while those in group B received exercises to increase contralateral hand strength followed by application of the same program as group A. The treatment programs were conducted 3 times per week for 10 successive weeks. The outcomes included affected handgrip strength as a primary outcome and age equivalent for grasping in the Peabody developmental Motor Scale – Fine Motor (PdMS-FM). These measures were recorded before and after the application of the allocated interventions. Results. There were statistically significant differences when comparing pre- and post-treatment mean values in each group. Also, there was a significant difference in favour of the study group when comparing post-treatment mean values ( p < 0.05). Conclusions. Unilateral motor priming through cross-training is effective in improving grasping outcomes of the affected upper extremity concerning strength and fine motor development in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70515295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
