The objective was to evaluate the effect of two types of exercise volumes on exercise capacity, physical activity levels, and quality of life in subjects undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.A randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in 17 subjects, who were randomly assigned to two groups. The first (n = 7) was trained for eight consecutive weeks, and the second (n = 10) for 12 weeks. The six-minute walk test, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and the SF-36 were applied before starting the cardiac rehabilitation program at 8 and 12 weeks.No significant differences were found between the intervention groups. The rise of VO2max was only significant in the 8-week group. Both groups improved the distance walked and sedentary behaviour. The 12-week intervention group improved the quality of life, specifically in physical functioning, and the 8-week intervention group in the domains of social function, physical, and emotional role. Additionally, the percentage of participants meeting physical activity recommendations was higher in the 12-week cardiac rehabilitation group.The implication for the practice is that the exercise traditionally used in cardiac rehabilitation shows early changes in exercise capacity and quality of life. The results of the levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour improved after 12 weeks of rehabilitation without the presence of adverse events.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"35 27","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141924803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods. A total of 11 individuals participated in this pilot study. They were of both genders, mean age 70.73 ± 10.67 years, diag-nosed with idiopathic Pd, and classified in stages 1 to 4 on the Hoehn & Yahr scale. The volunteers were assessed, before and after the APT intervention, with the Unified Parkinson’s disease Rating Scale (UPdRS), sections ii (AdLs) and iii (motor sections), in addition to Parkinson’s disease Questionnaire-39 (PdQ-39) (QoL). The APT comprises multicomponent exercises developed throughout a 12-week period, in twice-a-week 40-minute sessions. The data were analysed with the Wilcoxon test and MCid values described in the literature. Results. There were no statistically significant changes in the results found ( p > 0.05), but they neared the MCid values in both scales. Conclusions. different forms to analyse a study are necessary to elucidate the applicability of MCid values in detecting an improvement or worsening in the clinical condition of people with Pd.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70524193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An increase in the average life expectancy constitutes one of the greatest achievements of humanity, and at the same time a serious challenge for modern health protection and social care systems. The main aim of the work is to investigate quality of life and risk of falls. Methods. Forty-four people (30 females and 14 males) aged 63 to 99 (average: 83.2 ± 7.2), recruited from two local nursing homes, participated in the study. To assess the risk of falling, the short-form version of FallScreen (physiological profile assessment, Prince of Wales Medical Research institute) was used. To assess QoL (quality of life), the Polish version of the SF-36 questionnaire in its standard version was used. Results. it was indicated that in the year preceding the study, nearly 60% of participants fell; 32% ( n = 14) fell once and 27% ( n = 12) fell two or more times. occurrence of chronic diseases and taking at least three medications were reported by more than 80% of the seniors. The Results section presents the components of the physical and mental dimensions of the self-assessment of the quality of life of the participants of the study. The average index of quality of life among the studied people was 94.3 points, which is 55.2% of the maximum score. Conclusions. The dominating risk factor for falls, as established in the nursing home residents against the Physiological Profile Assessment (PPA) scale, consisted in slower reaction to a stimulus; its average value exceeding by threefold the reference value for healthy individuals of similar age.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70522901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) is a conservative approach for the management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AiS) designed according to the guidelines of the international Society on Scoliosis orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SoSoRT). Hence the aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of PSSE and conservative management strategies for patients with AiS. Methods. A systematic review was conducted and searches were carried out on a virtual database. The primary outcome measure analysed in this paper was Cobb angle and angle of trunk rotation, while the secondary outcome included functional capacity. A total of twelve studies were included in the review, which was analysed to determine the effects of conservative management of spinal scoliosis among adolescent aged children. Results. The study was conducted on patients who had developed idiopathic scoliosis and had a Cobb angle of greater than 10°. The significance of the conservative management protocol was estimated based on the reduction of Cobb angle by > 5° post-intervention. Conclusions. This review concluded that therapeutic exercises alone have added to the noninvasive standard of care in reducing magnitude of Cobb angle among AiS patients. The studies reviewed in this paper provide significant evidence that a minimum of sixteen weeks of the exercise-based protocol has been able to produce a statistically and clinically significant result in Cobb angle reduction by almost 5° to 8°.","PeriodicalId":37315,"journal":{"name":"Physiotherapy Quarterly","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70524339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary purpose was to compare the effect of conventional program, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (iASTM) and kinesiotape (KT) in patients with chronic mechanical low back pain (CMLBP). Methods. 51 participants were randomly enrolled into three equal groups. Group A ( n = 17) received conventional program, Group B ( n = 17) received conventional program plus iASTM, and Group C ( n = 17) received conventional program plus KT. The participants were evaluated before and after eight sessions using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), pressure algometer, dual inclinometer, and oswestry disability index (odi). Results. Between pre-treatment and post-treatment, the three groups demonstrated a significant pain reduction (57.2%, 61.2%, and 57.77%; p < 0.0001), a significant increase in pain pressure threshold (PPT) [right (Rt): 56%, 53.2%, and 35.6%; left (Lt): 49%, 50.55%, and 41.36%; p < 0.0001], a significant improvement in the range of motion (RoM) (flexion: 38.59%, 43.55%, and 35.7%; extension: 72.4%, 88.73%, and 65.56%; Rt lateral flexion: 79.05%, 78.03%, and 55.42%; Lt lateral flexion: 85.33%, 96.37%, and 64.66%; Rt rotation 135%, 116.5%, and 188.48%; Lt rotation: 203%, 140.48%, and 224.24%; p < 0.0001), and a significant improvement in the functional disability index (56.8%, 49.55%, and 46.99%; p < 0.0001). No significant difference in pain, PPT, RoM and function was found among the three groups. Conclusions.
