Study Design: An agroclimatic study was carried out to study the effect of environmental alterations on the activity of soil bacteria in a multifactor climate change experiment in which wheat crop was grown under field conditions and under temperature gradient tunnel maintained at different and higher temperature. Attempt was made to screen high CO2 and high temperature tolerant diazotrophic bacteria from wheat rhizosphere. Place of Study: Department of Microbiology, PAU, Ludhiana. Methodology: Nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated on Jensen’s medium using serial dilution spread plate technique. The bacterial isolates were characterized biochemically using standard techniques as described in Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology.The isolates were also assessed for their ability to produce indole acetic acid, siderophores production, ammonia excretion, qualitative phosphate solubilization and solubilization of phosphate by quantitative method. Results: A total of 21 different nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated from rhizospheric soil samples of wheat crop grown under field conditions and under temperature gradient tunnel. Out of 21 isolates, 8 isolates were able to grow upto 20% concentration of CO2 and 7 isolates showed growth upto 60°C. Tolerance to high CO2 and high temperature was observed to more in the bacteria isolated from the rhizospheric soil of wheat crop grown under temperature gradient tunnel. Original Research Article Kaur and Gosal; BJECC, 7(3): 195-204, 2017; Article no.BJECC.2017.015 196 Functional characterization of these isolates showed that the isolate WT5 had significantly higher IAA production (44.3 μg/ml) after 5 days of incubation in the medium supplemented with tryptophan. Among these 21 isolates, six were found to have P-solubilizing diazotrophic trait and five were found to show siderophore production on CAS agar plates. The amount of ammonia excretion was non-significant among the isolates and was in the range of 1.14-3.70 μg/ml. The isolate WF6 was found to be the best isolate in terms of the functional characteristics and tolerance to high CO2 and temperature levels. Conclusion: Results indicate that alterations in environmental factors may cause changes in activities of bacterial populations. These results illustrate the potential for complex community changes in terrestrial ecosystems under climate change scenarios that alter multiple factors simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":373103,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Environment and Climate Change","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131810839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Green roof is one of the innovative \u0000concepts to face this battle. An increase in its use is noticed in urban areas worldwide. But a question arises: what are the environmental consequences of the green roofs’ life cycle? In this paper, the environmental performance of two complete systems of lighter and heavier green roofs implemented in a global south low-income country are analyzed and compared in order to determine the potential impacts of both types of green roof systems. For proposing solutions aiming at reducing environmental loads of green roofs, Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach was used in the present study. For this purpose, the approach consists of the following phases: definition of the objective, life cycle inventory, characterization of impacts, and interpretation of results. LCA calculations were done with the help of OpenLCA software. Results show that, non treated materials and / or imported ones are more environmentally impactful. Hence, it is profitable to reduce the use of cement, gravel, virgin plastics, and soil as well as imported materials whose transport is done by plane. In addition, use of natural fertilizer for amending the growth substrate and water from well for watering the green roof, is also recommended.","PeriodicalId":373103,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Environment and Climate Change","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125065518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study sites were located on the lower slope, southeast aspect, northwest aspect, and ridge top in the Ridge and Valley province of central Pennsylvania, USA. During the 20 th century, but prior to 1980, growth rates on most sites were statistically similar. After 1980, both species experienced significantly higher basal area increment (BAI) on southeast aspects than northwest sites. Increased growth rate was significantly correlated with increasing tree size. However, this relationship varied across site types and was impacted by disturbances from severe storms in the mid-1950s, 1966, and mid-1990s and gypsy moth outbreaks in the 1980s. Both species exhibited the highest frequency of tree ring releases on southeast aspects. Tree growth was also affected by temperature, precipitation and topographic position. Red oak growth was negatively correlated with current year temperature, particularly on northwest and ridge top sites. Chestnut oak growth responded positively to increasing temperature on southeast and lower slope sites. Moreover, red oak growth on northwest and ridge top locations were negatively correlated with winter temperatures while chestnut oak growth was positively correlated with winter temperatures on lower slope and southeast sites. We conclude that changing climate patterns, including increased temperature, precipitation, and extreme climatic events and site variability affected the growth rates of red oak and chestnut oak.
