It deals with the relevance of Biblical studies for the understanding of Aquinas’ theological work, the hermeneutical tools used by Aquinas when commenting the Book of Psalms, the contemporary representatives of the school of Biblical Thomism and the main lessons a reader could draw from Aquinas’ reading of the Book of Psalms.","PeriodicalId":37181,"journal":{"name":"Biblica et Patristica Thoruniensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49517318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the article is to elucidate the reasons for and the meaning of Job’s harsh words by comparing two different interpretations of the passage offered by Gregory the Great and Thomas Aquinas. Both expositions seem to be incompatible regarding: the reasons for and the aims of Job’s cursing, the moral evaluation of his cursing, the reasons for and the objects of Job’s sorrow, the virtuous way of expressing sorrow. On the other hand, they seem compatible concerning the admission of the fact of experiencing sorrow by Job and the moral imperative to tame sorrow. The incompatibilities appear to be rooted in two different approaches to passions (the Stoic versus the Peripatetic one) and in different evaluations of earthly life and goods. It is shown that Aquinas’ interpretation is more faithful to the text and relies on a more adequate anthropology and psychology.","PeriodicalId":37181,"journal":{"name":"Biblica et Patristica Thoruniensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43442811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The perspective of the Third Gospel shows the person of the Savior as a physician of souls and bodies, which allowed ancient Christian authors to weave threads and medical terminology. The article contains a synthesis of the most important issues considered by the Fathers of the Church about Luke 14:2–4. Dropsy was considered an incurable disease. In ancient times, the comparison between a vicious person and living a sinful life as suffering from dropsy was quite widespread. The ancient exegetes emphasized the symbolic and moral value of dropsy. The interpretation of the healing of the man with dropsy however appears with sober and sparse indications. Christian preachers used common beliefs to exhort conversion and show the way of life worthy of Christians. These are the common reflections present in the systematic commentaries and the occasional sermons in Greek and Latin Christian authors.","PeriodicalId":37181,"journal":{"name":"Biblica et Patristica Thoruniensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46408102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In syndonological studies focused on the Turin Shroud, studies on its history are also undertaken. It is generally accepted that the period is documented from the mid-fourteenth century, when the shroud was in French Lirey near Troyes. His earlier fate is highly hypothetical or even unknown. In this article an attempt will be made to trace literary sources in which the topos of Jesus’ shroud and his image in general in Christian antiquity appear, and to link them to the canvas currently in the Turin cathedral. Four groups of sources became the subject of research: (1) canonical gospels adopted by the Church and patristic comments to them, (2) Christian apocryphal literature of the ancient and medieval times, taking the topos of the shroud and (3) the image of Jesus, (4) as well as early itineraries Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land (the homeland of Jesus and the apostles), in which the shroud is mentioned, as well as auxiliary artifacts selected with the messages contained in these sources. The major part of the article constitutes a rhetorical analysis of the song, first as a whole and then within its individual rhetorical units. In the final part of the article, major theological motifs of the song are presented, which are part of a new vision of suffering and death in the context of the Old Testament.","PeriodicalId":37181,"journal":{"name":"Biblica et Patristica Thoruniensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47427369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
