{"title":"Characteristics of youth who leave the emergency department without being seen following sports-related concussion.","authors":"Jacquelyn J Deichman, Janessa M Graves, Tracy A Klein, Jessica L Mackelprang","doi":"10.2217/cnc-2019-0010","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2217/cnc-2019-0010","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Aim: </strong>Despite the rising incidence of emergency department (ED) visits for sports-related concussion, the frequency and characteristics of youth leaving before being seen are unknown.</p><p><strong>Methodology: </strong>National estimates of ED visits for sports-related head injuries among youth (10-18 years) were generated for 2006-2017 using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. {"title":"Remote concussion history does not affect visually-guided reaching in young adult females.","authors":"Christopher Fueger, Lauren E Sergio, Sabine Heuer, Labina Petrovska, Wendy E Huddleston","doi":"10.2217/cnc-2019-0007","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2217/cnc-2019-0007","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Aim: </strong>We examined the long-term effects of concussions in young adult females on visuomotor behavior during a visually-guided reaching task of various complexities.</p><p><strong>Materials & methods: </strong>20 females with a history of longer than 6 months since a concussion and 20 healthy females quickly and accurately performed a delayed reach to a previously cued target.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>As both cognitive and motor load increased, task performance decreased for both groups (p < 0.05). Torres","doi":"10.1093/med/9780190937447.003.0012","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190937447.003.0012","url":null,"abstract":"Post-concussion syndrome is no longer an accepted medical term and has been replaced by the phrase “persistent post-concussive symptoms” or simply “persistent symptoms.” Post-concussion syndrome had been used to identify individuals with prolonged symptoms following concussion, but the term assumed that concussion is a homogeneous process and that persistent symptoms were always a manifestation of the original brain injury. Concussion often manifests in different clinical domains, and it is important that these domains be managed more specifically. Domain-specific interventions seek to address the somatic, cognitive, and emotional issues that are common following concussion. Helmets do not prevent concussion, and are sometimes used as a weapon that may actually lead to a concussive injury. Football helmets are certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), and the National Football League has also developed criteria for evaluating football helmets independent of NOCSAE.
