Publications involving humans were examined from The European Journal of Sports Science, Medicine & Science in Sport & Exercise, The Journal of Sport Science & Medicine, The Journal of Physiology, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, and The British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2014–2020. The total number of participants, the number of male and female participants, the title, and the topic, were recorded for each publication. Data were expressed in frequencies and percentages. Chi-square analyses were used to assess the differences in frequencies in each of the journals. About 5,261 publications and 12,511,386 participants were included in the analyses. Sixty-three percentage of publications included both males and females, 31% included males only, and 6% included females only (p < .0001). When analyzing participants included in all journals, a total of 8,253,236 (66%) were male and 4,254,445 (34%) were female (p < .0001). Females remain significantly underrepresented within sport and exercise science research. Therefore, at present most conclusions made from sport and exercise science research might only be applicable to one sex. As such, researchers and practitioners should be aware of the ongoing sex data gap within the current literature, and future research should address this.","PeriodicalId":36995,"journal":{"name":"Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82057916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explored girl and boy athletes’ perceptions of photographs of female college athletes, which provided insight into young athletes gendered perceptions of athletes and sport. Sixty-nine sportskids participated in focus group interviews where they discussed what they liked and disliked about a series of photographs of college female athletes. Framed by feminist cultural studies, the authors situated their analysis within the current historical moment bounded by young athletes’ post-Title IX and postfeminist sensibilities. The authors present their appraisals of a few exemplar images that characterize themes that appeared across the whole photo collection. Emergent themes included gendered sport terrain, which situates their comments within the gendered milieu of their sport experiences. Data also revealed themes associated with the select images: female athleticism, inspiration versus objectification, transgressing heteronormative femininity, and sporty cute. Overall, both girls and boys struggled with images that were interpreted as too feminine or too muscular/masculine. These data also point to how little has changed in the past 50 years regarding how female athletes are culturally constructed. While the borders of acceptability may have shifted, female athletes continue tenuous navigation of socially acceptable boundaries of athleticism, femininity, and muscularity while masculine privilege in sport continues and the presence of females in sport is framed by a heterosexual male gaze.","PeriodicalId":36995,"journal":{"name":"Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal","volume":"35 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90855944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gano-Overway","doi":"10.1123/wspaj.2021-0054","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1123/wspaj.2021-0054","url":null,"abstract":"aaa Women and girls have traditionally been underrepresented in research conducted in sport and physical activity settings (Cowley et al., 2021; Forsyth & Roberts, 2019). In addition, recent research has documented a gender bias in the review process, where research conducted with females was less likely to be recommended for publication compared with research conducted with males, even though no differences were perceived in rigor (Murrar et al., 2021). These issues are certainly not new, and may have been recognized by Marlene Adrian, who founded the Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal (WSPAJ) in 1992. In her inaugural editorial, she noted her hope that WSPAJ would become “a stimulus for the advancement of knowledge and the facilitation of enhanced and increased opportunities for girls and women to enjoy and benefit from sports and other physical activities” (Ladda, 2014, p. 4), would have reviewers and an editorial board who embraced this mission, and would encourage international perspectives. The journal continues to serve this purpose. Authors share their work to advance the knowledge by exploring the benefits (e.g., Elbe et al., 2016; Roethlisberger et al., 2020) and disadvantages (e.g., Kerr et al., 2020) of sport and physical activity participation for women and girls, the barriers that limit their participation (e.g., Ayala et al., 2021; Roper, 2016), the programming needed to develop health and well-being (e.g., Adams & Gill, 2015; Sobrero et al., 2017) and enhance performance (e.g., Dow et al., 2019; Perko et al., 2015), and systemic issues that limit involvement at all organizational levels within sport and exercise organizations (e.g., Kane & LaVoi, 2018), to name just a few. The journal has also published scholarly work that has centered the experiences of women in sport and exercise across identities (e.g., Armstrong, 2007; Semerjian & Cohen, 2006; Welch et al., 2021), lifespan (e.g., Di Brezzo et al., 2002; Ryan, 2006), and culture (e.g., Nakamura, 2002; Rathanaswami et al., 2016) stemming from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and methodological approaches. The journal continues to encourage an international perspective and representation. For example, WSPAJ volume 29 (April and October 2021 issues) provides insight into the experiences of women from a variety of countries, and its authors are associated with institutions in the United States of America (32), United Kingdom (18), Australia (5), Poland (5), Canada (3), Ireland (1), Luxembourg (1), and New Zealand (1). Thus,WSPAJ, which has a majority of its editorial board and reviewers who are women and focus on work related to the mission, has continued to support scholars in advancing the understanding of women in sport and physical activity by publishing their work, recruiting quality reviewers and editorial board members committed to the work, highlighting conference proceedings in this area (e.g., Farnsworth et al., 2021; Forsyth et al., 2021), and sharing thi","PeriodicalId":36995,"journal":{"name":"Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90329342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 program coordinators and coaches involved in the City of Ottawa Community Centre Basketball League (CCBL), and reflexive thematic analysis of the data was engaged. The findings were threefold: (a) CCBL coordinators and coaches recognize the importance of representation to enhancing their support to program users; (b) CCBL coaches and coordinators make efforts to build trust with and increase buy-in from first-generation immigrant parents to improve girls’ program participation; and (c) CCBL coaches and coordinators make religious accommodations in response to the needs of Muslim and Christian program users. The findings illustrated that community-based sport programs serving second-generation African Canadian adolescent girls in low-income communities require multifaceted program and outreach strategies that consider the intersecting social experiences of participants to improve recruitment and participation. To conclude, policy and program design and implementation strategies to support the creation of inclusive, equity-driven community-based sport practices were proposed.","PeriodicalId":36995,"journal":{"name":"Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91269867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite S&C’s growing presence across sports, women coaches have been generally marginalized and underrepresented. This study explores female S&C coaches’ experiences and coping mechanisms in a male-dominated industry. Semi-structured interviews with 15 female S&C coaches were conducted. The main themes identified from interview data are organizational politics, impression management, and humor. The findings suggest that women S&C coaches are often in subservient positions and have to adopt some traditional, male-generated subcultural practices to fit in. They carefully manage their coaching front stage to generate an impression that is expected and accepted in the given milieu. In their efforts to fit in, women often find themselves in a multiplicity of power matrices that involve a continuous negotiation of gender identity, internal politics, and sexist banter.","PeriodicalId":36995,"journal":{"name":"Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87589434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
