On the other hand, the utility, which corresponds to an individual public commission, tries to realize a socially optimal solution that fulfills steady-state constraints. In order to align the individual decision making of each agent with the socially optimal solution, the utility is allowed to provide additional price, which corresponds to tax or subsidy for the agent. This paper proposes a real-time pricing strategy of the utility. The proposed pricing strategy is heuristic, but we show that the resulting closed-loop system is stable, if the step size parameter in the real-time pricing strategy is sufficiently small, and realizes tracking to the socially optimal solution.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133383286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SCT and other related theories were developed primarily to explain differences between individuals, but explanatory theories of within-person behavioral variability are increasingly needed to support new technology-driven interventions that can adapt over time for each person. This paper describes a dynamical system model of SCT using a fluid analogy scheme. A series of simulations were performed to explore and better understand SCT. The model incorporates a nonlinear feature called habituation, an important feature of behavioral response resulting from continuous stimulus. It also illustrates how control systems engineering principles provide a promising approach for advancing health behavior theory development, and for guiding the design of more potent and efficient effective interventions.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133665308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Agents are assumed to be multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), minimum-phase, right invertible and non-introspective (i.e., they only receive relative output information from their neighboring agents, but lack independent information about their own states or outputs). The time-varying topology is assumed to switch among a finite number of directed graphs containing a directed spanning tree with an arbitrarily a priori given non-vanishing dwell time. Moreover agents are unable to exchange of controller states with their neighboring agents. For solving each problem, we propose a distribute dynamic protocol based on a combination of low-gain and high-gain design techniques.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132397734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, however, the device has also been used as a bridge to recovery device for patients whose heart condition might recover as a result of the LVAD support. In this latter case, the aortic valve dynamics under normal physiological conditions (i.e. continuously opening and closing in each cardiac cycle) plays an important role in the LVAD accomplishing its role as a bridge to recovery device. Serious complications can result if the aortic valve closes permanently during the LVAD support. Therefore, a reliable technique for detecting the aortic valve dynamics is crucial. This paper presents a new method that can predict working patterns of the aortic valve, based on an indicator derived from the systemic vascular current signal in the circulatory system to make a decision about whether the aortic valve is open or permanently closed. The proposed method has been tested using a nonlinear mathematical model of the combined cardiovascular-LVAD system. The simulation results show that the proposed method can detect the aortic valve dynamics effectively. The ability of the proposed method to detect the aortic valve dynamics provides a reliable platform for the development of a feedback control system to control the power, and hence rotational speed, of the LVAD, to ensure that the aortic valve opens and closes properly within each cardiac cycle to allow blood to flow from the left ventricle into the aorta.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132703159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A direct state feedback model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme is developed based on high frequency gain matrix decompositions. This scheme relaxes a key design condition, namely the high frequency gain matrices sharing a common L matrix in their LDS decompositions, required by an existing adaptive control scheme. Under the usual slow system parameter switching condition, closed-loop stability (signal boundedness) and small output tracking error in the mean square sense are achieved. The proposed scheme is simulated on linearized NASA GTM models to demonstrate its effectiveness in tracking performance improvement.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133120290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The drawback of these type of controllers however, are (i) the need of prior knowledge of the upper bounds of the system uncertainties and (ii) the absence of a proper gain tuning methodology. To tackle the aforementioned weaknesses, in our previous work [1] we have presented a RISE formulation with a time-varying compensation gain to cope for the need of upper bound of the uncertain system. In this study, we have extended our previous design to obtain a fully self tuning RISE feedback formulation. Lyapunov based arguments are applied to prove overall system stability and extensive numerical simulation studies are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133233929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is comprised of a number electric chillers and a tank that can store enough energy for the cooling demand of most days, but not all. The approach outlined here selects the number of chillers, and their time of operation, to minimize the costs, primarily by shifting the demand to the overnight period for which the electricity costs are lower and, due to lower ambient temperatures, the chillers are more efficient. The main goal is to develop a reliable and fast algorithm that can be used for planning and updating the chillers operations.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128869163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A disadvantage of the GPI models compared to, for example the Modified Prandtl-Ishlinskii models, has been that they have had to be identified using parametric non convex methods. Recently though, a method for non-parametric convex identification for an extended and more general GPI model was described, giving all model functions. Here, the method, which was based on input discrete equations, is briefly presented in terms of the corresponding input continuous equations. This extended model corresponds to a Preisach model and an explicit expression for this relation is derived. The method is directly applicable to data consisting of first order reversal curves, but in an application to an electrical substation equipment, it is shown that other kinds of data can also be used. The method gives significantly closer fit to this data than previous studies, and it demonstrates that non-equal left and right envelope functions are optimal.","PeriodicalId":369729,"journal":{"name":"2014 American Control Conference","volume":"81 15","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131873977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
