Venieris","doi":"10.1109/LCN.2000.891118","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/LCN.2000.891118","url":null,"abstract":"In this short paper an approach to the ATM hierarchical (PNNI) routing issue is presented based on a simple algorithm that chooses a route for a connection request out of a predefined list of possible routes between a specific source-destination pair in a probabilistic way. A route fitness (cost) function is used to assign selection probabilities to every candidate path and arriving connection requests are routed independently according to these path probabilities. This cost function has been chosen in a way to achieve a successful trade-off between the use of minimum-hop routes and the application of the load-balancing concept. Moreover we show that the performance of the proposed algorithm and other probabilistic routing algorithms can be enhanced with the application of scaling techniques that are used in genetic algorithms (GAs) maximizing the network revenue. Simulation results over a wide range of uniform, time-varying and skewed loading conditions show the effectiveness of the proposed routing algorithm.","PeriodicalId":369604,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 25th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks. We proposed a new metric for ATM frame latency called MIMO (message-in message-out) latency that improves upon other latency metrics commonly used for continuous frame technologies. Analysis of examples and measurement results showed that MIMO is less workload dependent and a better indicator of switch performance. MIMO can be used to measure the frame latency of a single switch or of a network of switches. The high-performance solutions known so far strongly rely on certain properties of the filter database to match against, such as a small number of distinct prefixes or the absence of conflicts. We present line search as a two-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional binary search on prefix lengths exploiting the advantage given by the different approach therein. This algorithm also works best on the filter databases that are expected to occur most often, but degrades gracefully when these assumptions no longer hold. Secure broadcasting intends to provide a secure communication channel from a sending principal to a group of legal receiving principals. Only legal receiving principals can decrypt the message, and illegal receiving principals cannot acquire any information from the broadcasted message. We propose exploiting tree-based error recovery, well-established concept for reliable multicast in fixed networks, where a hierarchical logical tree of a source and receivers is constructed over which the responsibility of error recovery is distributed. We introduce a new entity named ARMM (Agent for Reliable Mobile Multicast) located at each cell of the wireless/mobile networks. Each ARMM participates in a logical tree as a parent of mobile hosts in the corresponding cell. It is responsible for retransmission and requesting for retransmission on behalf of the mobile hosts. With aid of ARMM, the proposed scheme features (1) adaptive reconstruction of logical trees due to host mobility, (2) retransmission to mobile hosts via optimal routes, (3) abstracting a group of mobile hosts into a single ARMM (and thus reducing logical tree maintenance overhead), (4) efficient use of wireless bandwidth for retransmission, and (5) low processing burden on mobile hosts themselves. We motivate transmission power control and investigate the challenges involved in implementing power control in multiple access wireless packet networks. For this work, we focus on wireless ad-hoc networks, where the links connecting source destination pairs are all wireless. Power control has been implemented in cellular networks such as CDMA (code division multiple access) for guide some time now. However these protocols depend on centralized control (i.e. base stations) and duplex communications that are not inherently, present in wireless multiple access packet networks. Our simulation results show that implementing power control in a multiple access environment can improve the throughput performance of the non-power controlled IEEE 802.11 by a factor of 2, thus providing a compelling reason for migrating to a new power controlled multiple access wireless MAC protocol standard.","PeriodicalId":369604,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 25th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks.
